Mon Apr 9 201820:22Skidding Yanks star Stanton gets whiff of fan frustration
NEW YORK (AP) — Exasperated, caller Joe from Fair Lawn seemed to speak for every New York Yankees fan on the No. 1 topic in town."He is awful!" Joe hollered on WFAN radio. Not that Giancarlo Stanton needed to listen to the powerhouse sports talk station Monday to figure out how the masses felt. The slumping slugger heard the boos a day earlier at Yankee Stadium when he went 0 for 7, struck out five times and stranded nine runners in an 8-7, 12-inning loss to Baltimore."They're not going to cheer for that, so what do you expect?" Stanton said, adding, "got to settle down a little bit."The reigning NL MVP had never fanned five times in a pro game until doing it twice in a week. Those whiffs put him halfway to the career record for 5K games, held by Sammy Sosa. They also left him hitting .167 with 20 strikeouts in 42 at-bats in his first year with New York. His first week at home: 3 for 28, fanning 16 times. As some Yankees amateur historians have already pointed out — the great Joe DiMaggio struck... [More]
Mon Apr 9 201802:42Mets, not Yankees, off to sparkling start in New York
For one week at least, the angst in New York was on the American League side. While the Mets swept a pair of division rivals, the Yankees wrapped up their first homestand by losing three of four to Baltimore, with a couple extra-inning games going against them. The slugging tandem of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge has five home runs on the young season, but Stanton already has 20 strikeouts in 10 games and has heard boos from his new home crowd in the Bronx. After reaching the AL Championship Series last year and adding Stanton, the Yankees came into this season with high expectations, and it will take more than a few whiffs early in the season to change that. The Mets, on the other hand, finished 27 games out of first place in 2017, and the impressive rotation they'd assembled was struggling to stay healthy. Now the Mets are 7-1 after sweeping a two-game series with Philadelphia and taking three in a row at Washington . Only Boston (8-1) has a better record. Noah Syndergaard is back after... [More]

Sat Apr 7 201802:28Buck was right: Umpires say they missed call in O's-Yanks
NEW YORK (AP) — Turns out, Orioles manager Buck Showalter had it right.Crew chief Jerry Meals said umpires missed a call during a disputed rundown at third base during a game between Baltimore and the New York Yankees on Friday night."We were incorrect," Meals said. The play happened in the sixth inning with the Orioles leading 3-2 — they went on to win 7-3 in 14 innings behind Pedro Alvarez's grand slam. With runners at the corners, New York's Neil Walker hit a dribbler to pitcher Richard Bleier, who caught Giancarlo Stanton in a rundown between third and home. Gary Sanchez advanced from first to third while Stanton was hung up, and catcher Caleb Joseph eventually chased Stanton back toward third as well. That's when it got weird. Stanton ran through the base and into foul territory, giving himself up. Joseph first tagged Sanchez, then chased down Stanton, thinking he'd turned a double play. By the book, if both Sanchez and Stanton had remained on third base, Sanchez would have been called... [More]
