ATLANTA (AP) — Jacob deGrom struck out a season-high 10 in six innings and the New York Mets snapped a five-game skid Monday night with a 7-2 victory over the Braves that was overshadowed by a season-ending injury to Atlanta ace Mike Soroka. Soroka tore his Achilles tendon in the third inning as he took a step toward first to cover the bag — a huge blow to the two-time defending NL East champions. Robinson Canó had three RBIs before leaving the game himself — one of three New York infielders who went down with injuries. Wilson Ramos added a two-run homer for the Mets, who avoided a four-game sweep and ended Atlanta’s five-game winning streak. Travis d’Arnaud homered off deGrom (1-0) in the fifth.Soroka (0-1) allowed three hits, walked four and wound up being charged with four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, the second-shortest outing of his career. The Mets had injury concerns, too. Jeff McNeil was scratched just before the first pitch with back tightness, and Canó exited with left groin tightness... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — This was not what Gerrit Cole had in mind for his debut in pinstripes, and yet it was.Cole extended his regular-season streak of victories to 19, leading New York over the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 on Monday night for the Yankees' seventh win in a row. With the Yankee Stadium seats empty due to the novel coronavirus, wife Amy watched from home as Cole pitched his home debut for New York.“Mom and dad had a few of neighbors over in California," Cole said. "They sent us some pictures as they were watching the game. My folks, they’re a little bummed that they couldn’t be here, to be honest.”New York improved to 8-1 for the third time after 1988 and 2003 — but it's the equivalent of 22-3 over a 162-game season. The streak of the major league-best Yankees is tantamount to a 19-game spurt.“Even though it is a shorter season, it’s a long ways to go, right” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "We need to keep grinding now."Cole (3-0) allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one... [More]

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant is following through on his own words when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.Bryant returned to the starting lineup Monday night and homered in a 2-0 victory against Kansas City after missing two games with a stomach ailment. The 28-year-old Bryant, who thanked Reds second baseman Mike Moustakas after he self-reported possible coronavirus symptoms, spoke up himself when he wasn't feeling well Saturday, and had to sit out while he worked his way through Major League Baseball's pandemic protocols.“If we can add another part to our responsibility in that if you do feel something, you know, just stay away and take it as seriously as possible,” Bryant said on a video conference call. “That's the only way we're going to really get through a World Series. I just think it's important. Put your pride and egos aside. It could end up helping the rest of your teammates out, too.”The Cubs haven't had any positive coronavirus tests among their players since... [More]

ATLANTA (AP) — The two-time defending NL East champion Atlanta Braves took a huge blow when young pitching star Mike Soroka was lost for the season Monday night after tearing his right Achilles tendon against the New York Mets.Soroka was hurt in the third inning after delivering a pitch to J.D. Davis, who grounded the ball toward first baseman Freddie Freeman. After completing his follow-through, Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag — only to go down on his first step off the mound. The right-hander let out a scream and appeared to know right away it was a devastating injury, one that ensures he won't be back on the mound until 2021. “There's no sugarcoating it,” Freeman said. “It's just a terrible injury for somebody so young, so bright, so determined to be great at this game.”Soroka tried to walk gingerly for a couple of steps before dropping to his knees. He couldn’t put any weight on the leg as he was helped toward the clubhouse with the assistance of a trainer and manager Brian... [More]

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says his players let up and paid a price.Jeter blames the team's COVID-19 outbreak on a collective false sense of security that made the Marlins lax about social distancing and wearing masks."The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable,” Jeter said Monday.Infected were 21 members of the traveling party, including at least 18 players. None is seriously ill, Jeter said, and he expects all to return this season. With more than half the team sidelined, Jeter said the Marlins still can be competitive when their season resumes Tuesday at Baltimore after a hiatus of more than a week.Following an MLB investigation, Jeter said, it's impossible to know where the first Marlins player became infected or how the coronavirus reached the clubhouse. The team didn't have a single case of COVID-19 during three weeks of summer camp and left South Florida to play two exhibition games in Atlanta.Miami then opened the season with a three-game series in Philadelphia,... NEW YORK (AP) — This was not what Gerrit Cole had in mind for his debut in pinstripes, and yet it was.Cole won his home debut for the New York Yankees, extending his regular-season streak of victories to 19 with a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.New York improved to 8-1 for the third time after 1988 and 2003. The major league-best Yankees have won seven straight — the equivalent of a 19-game spurt over a 162-game season.Cole (3-0) allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one on 91 pitches, leaving after a 1-hour, 7-minute rain delay ahead of the seventh. His grunts could be heard in empty Yankee Stadium as easily as Rafael Nadal’s at a grand slam final.A month shy of his 30th birthday, the right-hander reached 99.3 mph, but he did not have his best arsenal. Cole threw 46 fastballs, 24 sliders, 18 knuckle-curves and three changeups.Signed to a $324 million, nine-year contract, Cole grew up a Yankees fan, and at his signing news conference in December brought... ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Braves ace Mike Soroka is out for the season after tearing his right Achilles tendon Monday night against the New York Mets.Soroka was hurt in the third inning after delivering a pitch to J.D. Davis, who grounded the ball toward first baseman Freddie Freeman. Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag, only to go down on his first step off the mound. The right-hander knew right away it was a devastating injury, one that ensures he won't be back on the mound until 2021. “It's a freak thing that happened,” manager Brian Snitker said, delivering the grim news after the Braves lost 7-2 to the Mets. "I'm sorry it did.”Soroka yelled in obvious pain and tried to walk gingerly for a couple of steps before dropping to his knees. He couldn't put any weight on the leg as he was helped toward the clubhouse with the assistance of Snitker and a trainer. It was a major blow to the two-time defending NL East champion Braves, who had won five straight despite struggling to put together... [More]

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Seven St. Louis Cardinals players and six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, causing Major League Baseball to postpone the team's four-game series at Detroit. The series was to have been played at Comerica Park from Tuesday through Thursday.“You think about how quickly something like this can spread,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. “Until it touches you, you sometimes might not believe it, but needless to say we know this is very real and we know it moves quickly and it moves silently, but it can infect a lot of people fast.”Mozeliak said that five of those who tested positive did not show symptoms. He said the others did — headaches, cough, sniffles, low-grade fever.“And of those eight, it’s a variety of symptoms but nothing at this point requiring anything like hospitalization," Mozeliak said. The Cardinals have been in quarantine since Thursday in Milwaukee, where their series with the Brewers was also postponed due to positive tests. ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets pulled infielders Jeff McNeil, Robinson Canó and Amed Rosario from a game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday night due to injury.McNeil was scratched just before first pitch after experiencing lower back tightness during his pregame routine in the batting cage. The 2019 All-Star was set to make his first start of the season in left field. He's hitting .343 this season.Rosario was pulled in the third inning with tightness in his left quad. The shortstop grounded out to end the top half of the third but did not run hard down the line. He left the field with a trainer and was replaced at shortstop by Andrés Giménez, who moved over from third base. Luis Guillorme took over at third.Canó left with tightness in his left groin two innings later. It wasn't clear when Canó suffered the injury. The 37-year-old second baseman, coming off a lousy first season with the Mets, had two hits Monday before exiting and is batting .412 this season.Rosario was hurt not long after Braves ace Mike Soroka collapsed to the infield grass with a right leg injury. He couldn't put any weight on the leg and had to be helped off the field by a trainer and manager Brian Snitker.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
