Soroka appeared to injure his ankle or foot.Soroka yelled in obvious pain and tried to walk gingerly for a couple of steps before dropping to his knees. The right-hander was helped toward the clubhouse with the assistance of a trainer and manager Brian Sniker. If the injury is serious, it would be a major blow to the two-time NL East champion Braves, who had won five straight despite struggling to put together an effective rotation. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brewers manager Craig Counsell says bench coach Pat Murphy has been released from the hospital after suffering a heart attack during a team workout Saturday.Brewers general manager David Stearns said Sunday that Murphy received a stent at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee and was resting comfortably.“It was a scary day,” Counsell said on Monday before the Brewers’ game with the Chicago White Sox. Counsell said Murphy sat down while the team was practicing infield defense and wasn't feeling well. Trainer Rafael Freitas was nearby and escorted Murphy to the clubhouse, where he met with team physician, Dr. Mark Niefeldt.“Niedfeldt was in the building fortunately and diagnosed what was going on, and we got him to the hospital," Counsell said. Milwaukee doesn't plan to bring in an additional staff member while Murphy recovers. Murphy’s heart attack was the scariest part of an eventful few days for the Brewers that included outfielder Lorenzo Cain and pitcher Shelby Miller opting... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani has a right forearm strain that will prevent the Los Angeles Angels' two-way star from throwing for at least four to six weeks, possibly ending his season as a pitcher after just two starts.Angels general manager Billy Eppler announced Monday that Ohtani “has a grade 1-2 strain of the flexor pronator mass” — a collection of muscles and tendons in the forearm near the elbow. The right-hander reported discomfort in his arm Sunday after he issued five walks and got only five outs in a rough 50-pitch start against Houston.Ohtani is traveling with the Angels to Seattle, where they open a six-game road trip Tuesday night. The Angels also use Ohtani as their primary designated hitter between his mound starts, and he is day-to-day as a hitter, the team said. But Ohtani is unlikely to begin a throwing program for at least a month, which means he might not have time to build himself back up to game strength before the 60-game major league season ends in late September.The... MILWAUKEE (AP) — Seven St. Louis Cardinals players and six staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, causing Major League Baseball to postpone the team's four-game series at Detroit. The series was to have been played at Comerica Park from Tuesday through Thursday.“You think about how quickly something like this can spread,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. “Until it touches you, you sometimes might not believe it, but needless to say we know this is very real and we know it moves quickly and it moves silently, but it can infect a lot of people fast.”Mozeliak said that five of those who tested positive did not show symptoms. He said the others did — headaches, cough, sniffles, low-grade fever.“And of those eight, it’s a variety of symptoms but nothing at this point requiring anything like hospitalization," Mozeliak said. The Cardinals have been in quarantine since Thursday in Milwaukee, where their series with the Brewers was also postponed due to positive tests. MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter says his players let up and paid a price.Jeter blames the team's COVID-19 outbreak on a collective false sense of security that made the Marlins lax about social distancing and wearing masks."The entire traveling party got a little too comfortable,” Jeter said Monday.Infected were 21 members of the traveling party, including at least 18 players. None is seriously ill, Jeter said, and he expects all to return this season. With more than half of the team sidelined, Jeter said the Marlins still can be competitive when their season resumes Tuesday at Baltimore after a hiatus of more than a week.Following an MLB investigation, Jeter said, it's impossible to know where the first Marlins player became infected or how the coronavirus reached the clubhouse. The team didn't have a single case of COVID-19 during three weeks of summer camp and left South Florida to play two exhibition games in Atlanta.Miami then opened the season with a three-game series in... CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant is following through on his own words when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.Bryant returned to the starting lineup Monday against Kansas City after missing two games with a stomach ailment. The 28-year-old Bryant, who had thanked Reds second baseman Mike Moustakas after he self-reported possible coronavirus symptoms, spoke up when he himself wasn't feeling well Saturday, and then he had to sit out while he worked his way through Major League Baseball's pandemic protocols.“If we can add another part to our responsibility in that if you do feel something, you know, just stay away and take it as seriously as possible,” Bryant said on a video conference call. “That's the only way we're going to really get through a World Series. I just think it's important. Put your pride and egos aside. It could end up helping the rest of your teammates out, too.”The Cubs haven't had any positive coronavirus tests among their players since they started summer... [More]

Last month, the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals opened this abbreviated schedule with a game that was shortened because of rain. That set the tone for a chaotic couple of weeks in which the coronavirus has wreaked havoc with the schedule — and the weather hasn’t always cooperated either.Already, there are questions about whether teams can realistically play the 60 games originally slated for them — and how they might try to come as close as possible.“We’re just going on whatever they tell us to do, and trying to stay healthy here, and play the games that are put in front of us,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said before the first of Sunday’s two games.By the end of... He is ranked No. 6 overall by MLB Pipeline, while other talent evaluators rank him even higher. The 10th overall pick in the 2017 draft has risen through the Angels' minor league system more quickly than most projections, reaching Triple-A Salt Lake for 27 games last season as a 20-year-old with five-tool skills and major league power.Adell appeared to be close to making the Angels' major league roster out of summer camp, but was sent to their alternate training site in Long Beach. Cleveland's starting rotation is rolling through the early stages of the season. The Houston Astros, on the other hand, are having to make do with a group that bears little resemblance to the one that pitched its way to the World Series last year.Someone forgot to tell the Indians that starting pitchers might struggle early in this abbreviated campaign. The short training camp doesn't seem to have affected this Cleveland rotation. In 10 games, the Indians' starters have struck out 86 batters with only nine walks, going 5-3 with a 2.57 ERA.Cleveland had a streak of seven straight starts by pitchers who went at least six innings with two runs or fewer. That was snapped Friday, but Shane Bieber looks like an ace so far, and Zach Plesac was outstanding in his first outing. It wasn't long ago that Houston was the team with a rotation everybody feared, but Gerrit Cole is with the New York Yankees now, and Justin Verlander has been out with a strained right forearm.Zack Greinke is still with the... NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge homered twice and drove in five runs, connecting for the fifth straight game and breaking an eighth-inning tie with a tape-measure shot that powered the New York Yankees past the Boston Red Sox 9-7 on Sunday night for their sixth consecutive victory. Luke Voit also went deep in a back-and forth slugfest to help the Yankees (7-1) finish a three-game sweep in the first series this season between the longtime rivals. New York has won six in a row and 11 of 12 against Boston since last July.DJ LeMahieu tied it 7 in the eighth with a two-out RBI single off Matt Barnes (0-1) past diving second baseman José Peraza. The clutch hit came after Mike Tauchman, who entered on defense in the seventh, walked and stole second.Judge then launched a no-doubt drive that landed several rows up in the raised bleachers beyond the left-center bullpen for his sixth home run already this year. The big slugger socked a three-run shot in the second, making him the first Yankees player... [More]
