RHP Brad Ziegler got a game-ending double-play grounder to work out of a bases-loaded jam Friday night to gain his second save of the season. The save was also his 30th straight successful conversion, extending his own franchise record.

With just blown saves on the season, Ziegler has quietly been one of the games most effective closers since taking over the role early in the season. For fantasy purposes, however, the lack of strikeouts (just 34 in 66 innings) does limit his value compared to the elite relievers in the game.

Since allowing seven runs at the end of August in two bad outings, Ziegler has now gone five straight innings without allowing a run. The only statistic missing for Ziegler are the strikeouts, as he has just 34 in 63 innings this season. With that said, his 2.00 ERA and 0.95 WHIP are elite for any closer.

Ziegler has posted dismal strikeout totals in his first full season as Arizona's closer, yet has managed to secure all but two saves. The veteran sidewinder has seemingly recovered from a lingering ankle injury, going 1.2 innings against San Francisco with relative ease. Ziegler's prospects as the Diamondbacks' closer are uncertain beyond this season, but he's provided fantasy owners with excellent value off the waiver wire.

The 35-year-old was right back to his old tricks after missing more than a week with an ankle issue, recording three groundball outs on nine pitches. He has a 73.4 percent groundball rate for the season. Now that he's been given the green light to pitch for Arizona, it seems likely Ziegler will return to the closer role for the final weeks of the season.

Ziegler was unavailable for Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies after turning his ankle and hurting a finger on his pitching hand during his appearance Monday, the Associated Press reports.

Ziegler apparently twisted the ankle while attempting to field a comebacker, but all indications are that the Diamondbacks closer is feeling fine and should be available again by the end of the week. The 35-year-old has sputtered in his last two outings with seven runs allowed on 10 hits and a walk over 2.1 innings, but with a shiny 2.48 ERA and 1.01 WHIP over 58 frames this season, he's still been the team's top reliever. Don't expect him to surrender the closer's role to Daniel Hudson just yet.

Ziegler was hit hard for the second consecutive night taking the loss (0-3) against the Rockies when he allowed four runs on four hits and a walk while recording just two outs.

Ziegler has been so good this year that, in the absence of some news of an injury or fatigue, these outings probably should be chalked up to some bad luck. That said, look for him to perhaps get some extra rest before his next appearance.

This was Ziegler's first appearance of more than an inning since July 17 and he threw 19 pitches in the tenth inning while allowing three hits, so perhaps fatigue was at work, but Ziegler actually got the first two batters of the inning before A's got to him. Chalk it up to a bit of a fluky outing and move on.

Ziegler just continues to get it done for Arizona as he's converted 22 straight saves now. There was much speculation when he was inserted into the closer role, but his 1.46 ERA and 0.86 WHIP justifies his status. Aside from a three-run outing against Washington in a non-save situation on August 6, Ziegler has allowed just one run since June 3.

Ziegler's 21 saves rank tied for 21st in baseball, which almost no one predicted when he deposed Addison Reed as the D-backs' closer, let alone before the season. His sterling 1.58 ERA is propped up by a .183 BABIP, which is probably unsustainable, but it's worth noting the Diamondbacks lead the majors in defensive runs saved so the team is geared to give strong support to Ziegler's groundballing ways. He might see a small uptick in runs the rest of the way, but should finish strongly.

Ziegler recovered nicely from one his worst outings of the year and reaches the 20-save plateau for the first time. Ziegler has been a nice surprise for those owners who jumped on him early in the season.

Ziegler allowed three runs on three hits, including a home run, in a non-save situation against Washington on Thursday.

Ziegler had only allowed one run since June 3, so this outing isn't something to be concerned about. Ziegler yielded just his third home run of the season, while he is getting more than 5 ground ball outs for every fly ball out he gets, which keeps him effective without the strikeouts most closers rack up. He has a firm grip on the closer's role in Arizona.
