LHP Amir Garrett will get the call Thursday when Cincinnati finishes up its series and road trip in St. Louis. Garrett last pitched Friday night at the New York Mets, absorbing a 5-1 loss as he allowed three homers in a five-inning stint, along with four runs and two walks. Garrett dominated the Cardinals on April 7 at Busch Stadium in his big league debut, throwing a two-hitter over six shutout innings in a 2-0 victory.

LHP Amir Garrett made his first start in the majors in more than three months Friday night, when he took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over five innings as the Reds fell to the Mets, 5-1. Garrett, who last started for the Reds onJune 20, also dodged an injury scare when he felt a pull in his left calf during the fifth inning. After a visit from a trainer, Garrett threw four warm-up pitches and remained in the game. Garrett is expected to stay in the rotation for the rest of the season. He is 3-7 with a 7.39 ERA in 13 starts for the Reds this year.

LHP Amir Garrett will make a homecoming of sorts Friday night, when he takes the mound against the New York Mets at Citi Field. Garrett went to college a few minutes away from Citi Field at St. John's, where he spent two years on the basketball team before beginning his professional baseball career. This will be Garrett's first start for the Reds since June 20, when he took the defeat after allowing six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a 6-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Garrett is 0-4 with a 12.49 ERA in his last six big league starts dating back to May 18. He was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on June 23 and went 2-4 with a 5.89 ERA in 13 starts before being recalled Tuesday. Garrett has never faced the Mets.

LHP Amir Garrett, 25, was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. Garrett burst on to the scene April 7 when he became only the third pitcher in Reds history to throw at least six shutout innings in his major league debut since Wayne Simpson in 1970. On April 19, he tied the club record for strikeouts by a rookie left-handed pitcher with 12. But he hit a rough patch soon after and was optioned back to Louisville. Garrett has shown improvement in recent starts, finishing the season at Louisville with a 5.72 ERA in 14 starts. He was 3-2 with a 6.45 ERA in six starts for the Reds.

Garrett, 23, has a 2.69 ERA and 101:41 K:BB ratio through 97 innings for High-A Daytona.

Garrett gave up his hoop dreams for a life on the diamond, and it looks like he made the right decision. The 6-foot-5 southpaw has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last eight starts for the Tortugas.

Garrett has a 3.52 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 58 strikeouts and 21 walks in 53.2 innings with High-A Daytona.

The 23-year-old lefty's numbers ballooned after he gave up eight runs in his last outing against Lakeland, but he is still having a very impressive season in his first year in the Florida State League. Despite a bloated WHIP, Garrett's FIP sits at a very respectable 2.52, which is largely due to some bad luck on balls in play (.356 BABIP). A strong case can be made that after Robert Stephenson, Garrett is the next best pitching prospect in the Reds' system. He profiles as a mid-rotation arm, but as a former college basketball player, he is still a little raw and probably won't reach the big leagues as soon as his age might indicate.

The Reds optioned Garrett to High-A Daytona as part of their Monday cuts.

Garrett is a long-term project for the Reds, having given up basketball at St. John's last summer to purse a baseball career full-time.
