Fri Feb 28 202002:33Working the count; 30-somethings grinding to extend careers
BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Jarrod Dyson kept waiting for the phone to ring. As December faded and the hot stove cooled, one thought kept running through the free agent outfielder's mind.“You mean to tell me I can't help nobody win?" said Dyson, who stole 30 bases for Arizona in 2019 before hitting the open market last fall.Dyson's won plenty. He offers the World Series ring he earned while playing for the Kansas City Royals in 2015 as proof. He appeared in 130 games at age 34 last season for a Diamondbacks team that hung around the playoff picture until the final week of the season. He's been part of a rebuilding projects and raucous October celebrations. Now in the final innings of a decade-long career, he wouldn't mind another shot at a playoff run.Yet the only palatable job offer Dyson received came from Pittsburgh. The Pirates are in need of a stopgap in center field after dealing Gold Glover Starling Marte to Arizona last month. So Dyson signed for one year and $2 million. Sure he considered... [More]
Tue Feb 18 202016:19Stewart, Turnbull facing crucial 2020 season for Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Christin Stewart homered in the top of the 10th inning to lift Detroit to a win in its season opener last year. A few days later, Spencer Turnbull took the mound for the Tigers as the starting pitcher for their first home game. Those are moments each player can look back on with pride, but both enter 2020 with a lot still to prove. The Tigers are still rebuilding after losing 114 games last season, and it remains to be seen how players like Stewart and Turnbull fit into their future. Both are a little old to be considered prospects, but they're still fairly inexperienced. This year is a chance to show they can be consistent contributors at the big league level.Stewart hit at least 25 home runs for three straight years in the minors. Then last season, he played 104 games for the Tigers, batting .233 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs.“That's going to help a lot. Having that year under my belt, it's another year facing those big league pitchers and being on the big league field... [More]
Mon Feb 17 202016:09Tigers' Cabrera arrives with something to prove
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Miguel Cabrera acknowledged Monday that he has something to prove after a disappointing season. But the Detroit Tigers slugger is definitely done tinkering with his swing."I don't want to change my swing anymore," Cabrera said before the Tigers' first full-squad workout of the spring. “I just want to be natural. The last three years I've been changing my swing a lot to feel comfortable at home plate.”Hobbled by a sore right knee, Cabrera tried making several adjustments to get through the 2019 season. In 136 games, he hit .282 with 12 home runs and 59 RBIs — all well below his career standards.Manager Ron Gardenhire said a big part of the lack of production was Cabrera's weight, which drifted well over his official playing weight of 249 pounds.Cabrera was noticeably trimmer upon showing up for his 13th Tigers spring, and he said the knee feels "pretty good.""Last year I was heavy," he said. "I think I lost a lot of weight from last year to this year. I tried to eat... [More]
Sun Feb 16 202018:08Maybin notices changes as he starts third tour with Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Cameron Maybin is starting his third stint with the Detroit Tigers. This one feels a bit different.“The first two times around, there were a lot of familiar faces," the veteran outfielder said Sunday. "Not that many now.”Maybin began his big league career with Detroit in 2007 and was enough of a prospect that he was traded for Miguel Cabrera. He returned to the Tigers in 2016 after a trade, and now the 32-year-old Maybin is back again after agreeing to a one-year contract.Maybin was a first-round draft pick for Detroit in 2005, and when he arrived in the majors, the Tigers were coming off a World Series appearance and were on their way to about a decade of consistent contention. They still had star pitcher Justin Verlander when Maybin returned in 2016, and that team nearly made the postseason. Now, however, Detroit is rebuilding. The Tigers still have Cabrera, but it's the team's young prospects who may end up getting much of the attention from fans in spring training.... [More]
