Jose Ramirez went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Wednesday's loss to the Twins.
Called up earlier in the day as a reinforcement for Asdrubal Cabrera (back), Ramirez hit second in the batting order and drove in the only run of the day for the Tribe. He should start a shortstop as long as Cabrera is out, but Cabrera has a shot to return as soon as Thursday.

He'll provide some infield depth while Jason Kipnis (oblique) is out. Ramirez was batting .319/.365/.484 with four homers, 17 RBI and eight steals over his first 23 games at Triple-A.

It's obviously no ideal, but Ramirez's recovering from left thumb surgery is the bigger concern at this point. The 21-year-old will play in a "B" game Tuesday, but it's not clear when he'll be ready for Grapefruit League action.

Coming back from to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb, Ramirez been taking flips in the batting cage as he works his way toward batting practice. He should have time to get ready by Opening Day but isn't a real candidate to crack the big league roster.

Jose Ramirez is likely facing surgery after injuring his left thumb in winter ball.
Ramirez, 20, spent most of the 2013 season with Double-A Akron. He got a taste of the big leagues as a September call-up, hitting .333 in 12 at-bats. The expectation is that he will be recovered by the middle of spring.
