C Drew Butera was called to get the final out of the ninth, his second pitching performance this year. He was also used in a June 25 blowout loss to the Astros. "Anytime I have to come in and pitch, it's never a fun time," Butera said. "It's an unfortunate situation."

C Drew Butera became the first Royals' position player to pitch since Mitch Maier on April 12, 2012. It was Butera's fourth career outing on the mound in the majors. Butera, who pitched the ninth, struck out Marwin Gonzalez swinging and has logged a strikeout in all four of his pitching outings. He also doubled in the ninth.

C Drew Butera hit his first home run of the season, a two-run homer in the third inning off RHP Carlos Carrasco. "Carlos was trying to go down and away and he left it middle-middle," Indians manager Terry Francona said.

Sun Jul 26 201511:41Butera in starting lineup Sunday against Astros
Butera is in the starting lineup Sunday against the Astros, Josh Vernier of 610 Sports Radio Kansas City reports.
Butera will get just his 12th start of the season, as starting backstop Salvador Perez remains one of the most heavily-used catchers in the game. Look for his starts to continue to arrive few and far between.
Fri May 8 201515:10Butera activated from minors Friday
Butera was activated from the minors Friday, Andy McCullough of the KC Star reports.
The Royals acquired Butera from the Angels on Thursday in exchange for minor league infielder Ryan Jackson. Butera will serve as the backup catcher while Erik Kratz is on the DL, but with Salvador Perez ahead of him, he's unlikely to see much playing time. Once Kratz returns, Butera will either shift down to the No. 3 catcher spot or return to the Triple-A ranks. In a corresponding move, the Royals optioned Francisco Pena to Triple-A Omaha.

Butera was sent to the Royals in exchange for minor league infielder Ryan Jackson on Thursday.
He had just been designated for assignment by the Angels, so the asking price was low. Butera fills a need for the Royals as Erik Kratz was placed on the disabled list Wednesday. Unfortunately, backup catcher on the Royals is basically like backup quarterback in the NFL, as Salvador Perez gets more starts at catcher than any other backstop in baseball.
Mon May 4 201517:20Butera designated for assignment Monday
Butera was designated for assignment Monday, Director of Communications Eric Kay reports.
Butera had served as the club's backup catcher behind Chris Iannetta to this point, but has struggled offensively with a slash line of just .190/.190/.190. He'll head to the minors for the time being while Carlos Perez will head to the majors and serve as the second option behind the plate.

Butera was confirmed to be the club's Opening Day backup catcher by manager Mike Scioscia, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
The move hardly comes as a surprise as Butera, who was acquired in a December trade with the Dodgers, is out of options so it was always likely that he'd start the season on the big league roster. The 31-year-old struggled in that capacity last season, slashing .188/.267/.288 in 61 games.
Tue Dec 9 201415:25Drew Butera: Traded To Angels
Butera was traded to the Angels on Tuesday for a player to be named later or cash, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.
The Dodgers swapped Butera out with Ryan Lavarnway late last week after Butera hit just .188/.267/.288 with three homers and 14 RBI in 61 games during the 2014 season. Things ended up working out pretty well for the 31-year-old Butera, however, as he'll get to stay in Los Angeles and presumably compete with Carlos Perez and Jett Bandy for the backup job with the Angels.
Fri Dec 5 201414:37Butera designated for assignment on Friday
Butera was designated for assignment on Friday.
Butera was sent down to make room for the Dodgers newest acquisition, after they claimed catcher Ryan Lavarnyway off of waivers. Butera struggled last season, slashing .188/.267/.288 in 61 games, and is just a .183/.239/.268 career hitter so he'll likely have to improve on that in the minors to make it back to the big leagues next season.

Butera went 2-for-4 with his third home run of the year Thursday, a two-run shot in the second inning against the Braves' Aaron Harang.
Butera hasn't hit much in his role as the Dodgers' backup catcher, but he's had a pair of nice games in his last three starts, having doubled twice in three at-bats on Aug. 3 against the Cubs.
Fri May 2 201400:26Drew Butera's insurance HR proves valuable
Drew Butera went 1-for-4 with two walks and hit what proved to be the game-deciding home run in Thursday's 12-inning victory over the Twins.
Butera laced a solo home run to left field off of Brian Duensing, padding the Dodgers' lead to 4-2 in the 12th inning. It ended up being very valuable, as closer Kenley Jansen loaded the bases with no outs and allowed one run before slamming the door on the one-run victory in the bottom-half of the 12th. The homer was Butera's first in the Majors since he hit one on July 1, 2012 off of Royals pitcher Aaron Crow.

Fri Nov 29 201316:55Dodgers agree to terms with Butera
Dodgers agreed to terms with catcher Drew Butera on a one-year, $700,000 contract.
That MLB teams are absolutely petrified of being caught short in the catching department will keep Butera on a 40-man roster for another winter. It'd be an upset if he beats out Tim Federowicz for a job backing up A.J. Ellis next spring, but he does provide insurance.

Wed Jul 31 201316:21Dodgers get catcher Drew Butera from Twins
Dodgers acquired C Drew Butera from the Twins.
It was the final deal of the 2013 non-waiver trade deadline. Butera, 29, is a .230/.263/.494 career hitter in 534 major league plate appearances. He is doubtful to make any sort of major impact for the Dodgers.
