Butera was confirmed to be the club's Opening Day backup catcher by manager Mike Scioscia, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

The move hardly comes as a surprise as Butera, who was acquired in a December trade with the Dodgers, is out of options so it was always likely that he'd start the season on the big league roster. The 31-year-old struggled in that capacity last season, slashing .188/.267/.288 in 61 games.

Butera was traded to the Angels on Tuesday for a player to be named later or cash, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reports.

The Dodgers swapped Butera out with Ryan Lavarnway late last week after Butera hit just .188/.267/.288 with three homers and 14 RBI in 61 games during the 2014 season. Things ended up working out pretty well for the 31-year-old Butera, however, as he'll get to stay in Los Angeles and presumably compete with Carlos Perez and Jett Bandy for the backup job with the Angels.
