Fri Mar 26 202116:14Hinch says Mize will be in rotation for Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — Right-hander Casey Mize will be part of the Tigers' starting rotation and Michael Fulmer will pitch out of the bullpen. Detroit manager AJ Hinch also said Friday that left-hander Derek Holland will make the team. Mize was the No. 1 pick in the 2018 amateur draft. He made his big league debut last year and went 0-3 with a 6.99 ERA. His ERA this spring training is 8.36, but he struck out nine in four innings against Toronto on Thursday. “We think Mize has continued to pitch better than his numbers indicated in the spring," Hinch said. "Last night, I do think he proved to himself more than he needed to prove to us that working in the strike zone is much more advantageous to him than kind of dancing around the strike zone and trying to get his outs that way.” Fulmer, the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year, made 10 starts last season but never pitched more than three innings after returning from Tommy John surgery. Hinch said he could start again at some point. Holland signed a minor league deal with the Tigers in January, and Hinch said he has the versatility to be a short or long reliever. When added to the 40-man roster, Holland would get a salary of $925,000 in the major leagues and $180,000 while in the minors. He would have the chance to earn $150,000 in performance bonuses for innings: $25,000 each for 50 and 75, and $50,000 apiece for 100 and 125. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Tue Feb 16 202117:52Tigers' GM says team considering 6-man rotation
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers are considering using a six-man rotation for at least some of this season as they return to a normal schedule with a pitching staff that will likely include some of the team's top prospects. General manager Al Avila spoke with reporters Tuesday, the day before Detroit's first workout for pitchers and catchers. “In our meeting today, we did discuss a six-man rotation, and then really, getting through the season and having relievers mixed in," Avila said. ”You might see more players being brought up and optioned throughout the season, as you need fresh arms from week to week.” Last year's abbreviated schedule lightened the workload for pitchers throughout baseball. Matthew Boyd led the Tigers in innings with 60 1/3. It remains to be seen how easily pitchers can re-adjust to a 162-game schedule, and Detroit has several young options who are still trying to establish themselves as big leaguers — and whose arms may need to be handled carefully. A six-man rotation... [More]
Fri Feb 12 202119:18Nomar Mazara, Tigers finalize $1.75 million, 1-year contract
DETROIT (AP) — Outfielder Nomar Mazara and the Detroit Tigers finalized a $1.75 million, one-year contract on Friday. Mazara, who turns 26 in April, hit .228 with one home run in 42 games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. That was his first season with the Chicago White Sox after he spent four with the Texas Rangers. “After a frustrating 2020 season, I’m looking forward to a fresh start and getting to work with the coaching staff — especially AJ Hinch, who I always enjoyed competing against during his time in Houston," Mazara said. "I’ve come to really appreciate coming to Detroit as a visiting player, and can’t wait to join their baseball community this season.” Hinch took over as Detroit's manager this offseason. Mazara hit 20 home runs in each of his first three years with the Rangers, then 19 in 2019. Mazara finished tied for fifth in the AL Rookie of the Year vote in 2016, the year Detroit pitcher Michael Fulmer won the award. “Heading through the offseason, we were looking to add a left-handed hitting outfielder to provide AJ with more options for the lineup, and bringing Nomar on board does exactly that,” Tigers general manager Al Avila said. Mazara's deal includes $500,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $100,000 each for 350, 400, 450, 500 and 550. To make room for Mazara, the Tigers designated right-hander John Schreiber for assignment. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Tue Jan 12 202119:27Tigers avoid arbitration with Fulmer, reach 1-year deal
DETROIT (AP) — Right-hander Michael Fulmer and the Detroit Tigers agreed Tuesday to a $3.1 million, one-year contract that avoided arbitration. The 2016 AL Rookie of the Year went 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA in 10 starts last season after missing all of 2019 because of Tommy John surgery. He earned $1,037,037 in prorated pay from a $2.8 million salary. Eight Tigers remain eligible to swap proposed salaries Friday: right-handers José Cisnero, Buck Farmer and Joe Jiménez, left-handers Matt Boyd and Daniel Norris, shortstop Niko Goodrum, third baseman Jeimer Candelario and outfielder JaCoby Jones. Detroit also announced that Steve Chase has been promoted to major league strength and conditioning coach after 16 seasons working in the organization’s player development system.
