Fri Jul 3 202019:22Trout uncertain, All-Star Game off as MLB gets back on field
His N-95 mask squarely in place, Mike Trout stroked line drives, streaked around the bases and caught flyballs at Angel Stadium. Tue Mar 3 202016:39Padres counting on Pham to be part of lineup's 'heartbeat'
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Tommy Pham’s cleats clacked on the sidewalk as he jogged between on-field batting practice and hitting in the cage.No walking until he returned to the San Diego Padres' clubhouse to get ready for Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Pham is all business at spring training as he works his way back to full strength from soreness in his side.Pham has high expectations of himself, as do the Padres. New to the Padres after being traded from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason, Pham is ticketed for an everyday role in the San Diego outfield even though he’s been slowed by his injury.“Everything has to improve. My swing, it’s just working on some stuff to kind of make me a more consistent hitter,” Pham said.Pham, a career .277 hitter who hit 21 home runs, drove in 68 runs and tied a career high with 25 stolen bases with the Rays last season, struck out three times in his spring debut for the Padres last Saturday. He went 1-for-3 with an RBI in his second game Sunday.... [More]
Mon Feb 17 202013:59Padres pitcher Paddack looks forward to showing off lion
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — San Diego right-hander Chris Paddack has something new to show hitters this season — a blue-eyed lion. Two days before spring training opened, Paddack had a tattoo of a lion — his spirit animal — inked from wrist to elbow on the outside of his left forearm. When he comes to a set position on the mound, the lion is directly batter’s line of vision. He relishes the chance to let it loose on opening day against Colorado on March 26.“Have I reflected on that start? Absolutely,” Paddack said. “But whoever pitches that day is our ace. The chemistry is more important than that. You can’t selfish yourself out of the group. I’m definitely a big believer in that. But don’t get me wrong, March 26 is my goal, for sure.”Paddack is a candidate after going 9-7 with a 3.33 ERA in 26 starts as a rookie last season. The Padres monitored his workload in the final stages of his return from Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the 2017 season.Paddak never pitched on fewer than five... [More]
Sat Feb 15 202015:58Myers back with Padres after a rumor-filled offseason
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — A week ago, San Diego Padres outfielder Wil Myers did not expect to start spring training in Arizona.Already traded twice in his career, Myers figured he would be in Florida after another deal.“It seemed extremely real at that given moment,” Myers said. But after a winter of rumors, Myers arrived in the Padres' camp Saturday with no hard feelings, a $20 million salary and a new approach that he believes will help him return to previous production levels.“That's the way that things go. Trades come and go. Sometimes they get serious and sometimes they kind of fade out. That's the way the way the game goes. There's no fault to anybody. That's the way the business of baseball is," he said."We’re just here to play, and wherever they decide to play me or whatever team it is, that's just the way it goes,” he said. After hitting 58 homers and stealing 28 bases in 2016-17 while becoming an All-Star, Myers suffered arm, oblique and foot injuries that limited him to 83 games in... Thu Feb 13 202018:08New-look Rays confident they'll be deeper, better
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (AP) — For a team that didn’t anticipate a lot of change after making the playoffs for the first time in six years, the Tampa Bay Rays have a lot of new faces on the roster entering spring training.Japanese slugger Yoshi Tsutsugo and trade acquisitions José Martinez, Hunter Renfroe, Manuel Margot and Randy Arozarena are among the newcomers the Rays are counting on to help a largely young team build on the success of the past two seasons.Key departures include catcher Travis d’Arnaud, closer Emilio Pagán and outfielders Tommy Pham and Avisaíl García, however expectations remain high after improving from 90 wins two years ago to 96 and an AL wild-card berth last season.“Expectations are up, but that’s what you want,” general manager Erik Neander said.“At the end of the day, the goal is to win by one. I think we’ve done enough on the offensive side to have a different look with guys who chip in in different ways,” Neander added. “And, I think we’ve also strengthened the... [More]
Thu Feb 13 202016:08Pham brings bat, thoughts to improve San Diego offense
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Acquired to help generate offense, Tommy Pham hopes to help the San Diego Padres make better contact.“I think we’re going to have to do a better job of controlling the strike zone,” Pham said Thursday on the Padres' first day of spring training workouts. “From when I played against them with Tampa, from what I saw outside looking in, we didn’t do a good job controlling the strike zone. There were a lot of punch -outs. Tampa is one of the best staffs in baseball, they strike out a lot of guys, but you have to give yourself a chance.”San Diego lead the NL with 1,581 strikeouts last year and was 13th among 15 clubs in runs with 682.Pham struck out 123 times in 654 plate appearances in only full season with the Rays, who traded him on Dec. 6. His analysis was informed by a three-game series between the teams in August, when the Rays won twice and their pitchers struck out 39 in 26 innings.“Strikeouts are a part of the game. Ddon’t get me wrong, I strike out a lot, too,”... [More]
Wed Feb 12 202017:44Tingler: Padres star Tatis Jr. to remain at shortstop
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Fernando Tatis Jr. will continue to make his diving, spinning moves at shortstop rather than in center field, rookie San Diego Padres manager Jayce Tingler said Wednesday.Tingler said he has no plans to give the Padres’ most dynamic player even a few spring training reps in center field. That thought popped up in the offseason when the Padres had preliminary talks with Cleveland about shortstop Francisco Lindor. The rumors gained brief traction after the Padres traded center fielder Manuel Margot to Tampa Bay for reliever Emilio Pagán on Saturday.“We have considered a couple center fielders; we never once discussed, honestly, Tatis being out there,” Tingler said in his opening news conference of spring.Tatis’ aggressive style of play contributed to him playing only 84 games last year. He thrust himself into the race for NL Rookie of the Year with his spectacular play before a stress reaction in his lower back ended his season in mid-August. The 21-year-old also missed... [More]
