LONDON (AP) — Boston Red Sox left-hander Brian Johnson was put on the 10-day injured list Saturday because of a medical matter not related to baseball. The team did not say what was wrong but the problem was discovered during routine testing by the medical staff. The 28-year-old left-hander is expected to pitch again this season."He's OK," manager Alex Cora said. "We do routine checks on guys and something popped up, so we have to take care of him. But he'll be fine. He'll be fine. He's actually working out in Fenway."Johnson is 1-1 with a 6.43 ERA in two starts and five relief appearances. The move to the injured list was retroactive to Thursday, a day after Johnson formed Cora of the issue after appearing as a pinch runner in the eighth inning of an 8-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox.Right-hander Hector Velázquez was activated from the 10-day injured list before Saturday's series opener against the New York Yankees at London's Olympic Stadium, Major League Baseball's first game in Europe.With... LONDON (AP) — High cheese comes to the land of high tea on Saturday. When Boston's Rick Porcello throws the first pitch to the New York Yankees at Olympic Stadium, the national pastime of the onetime colony will try to plant itself in the mother country. After looking at the cozy distance — 385 feet to center with a 16-foot wall — Yankees and Red Sox batters hope to run up some cricket-like scoring totals, perhaps even shattering the famous triangular light banks."Hopefully, we'll poke a couple out," Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said Friday, smiling after batting practice on a sunny afternoon. "It flies pretty well. It got good carry."The teams arrived Thursday on overnight flights after playing day games. Judge, who is 6-foot-7, ambled around London largely unrecognized."I was actually walking near the London Eye yesterday and I ran into a couple people that had the Yankee hat on," Judge said. "They had no idea who I was or anything. I said this is all right. 'I'm Aaron, great to meet you.'"About... [More]

BOSTON (AP) — David Ortiz helped his adopted city recover from the Boston Marathon bombings. And now the Red Sox are calling on their fans to reciprocate for their beloved Big Papi."We all remember in 2013 when we needed David Ortiz the most, he was there for us," team president Sam Kennedy said Monday, a day after the longtime slugger was wounded in a nightclub shooting in his native Dominican Republic. "So it's appropriate and expected that his community would rally behind David when he needs us most."The 43-year-old Ortiz was shot once in the torso on Sunday night in what appeared to be a targeted attack at a Santo Domingo nightclub. Dominican police there did not immediately identify or arrest the gunman; the motive was under investigation."I didn't sleep very well last night," said Red Sox special assistant Jason Varitek, who was Ortiz's teammate for nearly a decade. Mon Apr 22 201902:06Boston avoids big early hole with sweep of Rays
Hold off — for now — on the panic in Boston. The Red Sox are indeed off to a poor start in defense of their World Series title. They have a 9-13 record and baseball's third-worst run differential. But after sweeping a three-game series with first-place Tampa Bay, Boston has avoided the worst-case scenario early on.The reigning champs trail the Rays by five games in the AL East, but the deficit could be bigger. Boston ranks near the bottom of the American League in runs scored and ERA. Aside from J.D. Martinez, none of the team's big-name hitters have been great. Chris Sale and Rick Porcello are winless, and both have ERAs over 8.00.There's still more than a week left in April, though. And there's plenty of precedent that suggests a good team can recover from a start like this. Here are a few teams since the start of the wild-card era that had even worse records than the Red Sox after 22 games — and still ended up in the postseason:— The 2015 Rangers started 7-15 and were 8 ½ games out of...
