Descalso is dealing with a strained oblique and won't play over the next few days, The Denver Post reports.
Descalso's long-term viability doesn't seem to be in question but the Rockies will play it safe by putting him on the shelf for a portion of the upcoming week. Further news on his status should be released in due time while the Rockies monitor his strain over the next few days.

Descalso is projected to serve as the Rockies' top reserve at second base, shortstop, and third base this season, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports.
Signed to a two-year, $3.6 million contract in December, Descalso will bring versatility to a Rockies squad that has received scarce contributions from its backup infielders during four consecutive losing seasons. While Descalso's work with the bat over his career isn't impressive by any means, the Rockies have more than enough hitting talent across the other spots in the lineup to compensate for that deficiency. The Rockies believe his solid glovework will be enough to make him a capable insurance plan in the event that Troy Tulowitzki and Nolan Arenado fall victim to injuries again in 2015.
Tue Dec 16 201414:26Descalso signed two-year contract with Rockies on Tuesday
Descalso signed a two-year contract with the Rockies on Tuesday.
Although he was healthy all year, Descalso logged just 184 plate appearances with St. Louis in 2014 while serving in a utility role. He's just a .243/.313/.341 career hitter at the major league level, with 10 homers and 16 steals in 529 games, but Descalso can play all around the infield and is an upgrade over Charlie Culberson. The 28-year-old Descalso may even work into a starting role at second if DJ LeMahieu struggles or suffers an injury in the spring.
Tue Dec 2 201423:28Daniel Descalso: Non-Tendered By Cardinals
The Cardinals declined to tender Descalso a contract, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports.
St. Louis has enough infield depth to make Descalso expendable. He hit .242/.333/.311 with zero home runs and one steal in 184 plate appearances last season, and will have more real life value than fantasy value with whichever team he catches on with for 2015.

Descalso went 3-for-3 with a walk while making a spot start at shortstop Saturday.
With the DH spot available for the Cards playing on the road in Baltimore, Jhonny Peralta was given a day off from defensive responsibilities. The three-hit effort pushed Descalso's line to .198/.257/.248 for the season.
Wed Jul 30 201401:32Daniel Descalso exits after HBP on knee
Daniel Descalso left Tuesday's game versus the Padres after being hit on the right knee by a pitch.
Descalso was able to limp down to first base but was then replaced by pinch-runner Peter Bourjos. He'll likely be re-evaluated Wednesday before the Cardinals know how much time he might miss.

Wed Jan 29 201414:25Cardinals, Descalso avoid arb. with 1-yr deal
Cardinals and INF Daniel Descalso avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.29 million contract.
Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month, so the two sides ultimately settled at the midpoint. The 29-year-old will function as a utility infielder for St. Louis in 2014.

Fri Jan 17 201422:42Descalso only Cardinal to head to arbitration
Daniel Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.
The 27-year-old infielder is the only member of the Cardinals heading to arbitration. He'll earn a sizable raise over the $511,000 that he took home in 2013 to function in a utility role for the Cardinals.

Sun Oct 27 201317:47Daniel Descalso starting at shortstop Sunday
Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the World Series on Sunday.
The 27-year-old infielder started in Game 2 of the series, going 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Here's how the rest of the Cardinals lineup shakes out as they square off against Clay Buchholz: Matt Carpenter 2B, Carlos Beltran RF, Matt Holliday LF, Matt Adams 1B, Yadier Molina C, Jon Jay CF, David Freese 3B, Descalso 2B, Lance Lynn P.

Tue Oct 15 201318:13Daniel Descalso starting at shortstop Tuesday
Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the NLCS Tuesday.
The Cards are struggling offensively, so they'll sacrifice defense in getting Descalso in for Pete Kozma, who is hitless in the series. Descalso has four hits in 13 career at-bats versus Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.

Fri Aug 2 201323:10Daniel Descalso homers twice in rout of Reds
Daniel Descalso socked a pair of solo homers and scored three runs, leading the Cardinals in a 13-3 rout over the Reds on Friday.
Descalso finished the night 3-for-5. He's now hitting .265/.321/.423 on the season with five homers and 29 RBI in 196 at-bats. His multi-position eligibility makes him a fine middle infield option in NL-only leagues.

Tue Jul 30 201320:11Daniel Descalso goes 0-for-5 in loss
Daniel Descalso went 0-for-5 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader and is 1-for-17 since the All-Star break.
Descalso was a nice surprise for the Cardinals in the first half, hitting .275/.339/.425 in 167 at-bats, and it looked like he might take the shortstop job away from Pete Kozma earlier this month. Now that he's joined Kozma in slumping, the Cardinals have to be giving more thought to trying to upgrade at short in a trade. If it happens, Descalso would keep his job as a utilityman, though he'd lose some at-bats. Kozma would probably be sent down.

Wed Jul 10 201317:13Desclaso starting at SS again on Wednesday
Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop Wednesday for the fifth time in the Cardinals' past six games.
Pete Kozma will ride the pine yet again. Descalso is hitting .328/.366/.516 since June 1 and has suddenly become relevant in pretty much all NL-only fantasy leagues. The regression will happen eventually, but he is worth owning while he's hot and playing regularly.

Thu Jun 6 201322:46Daniel Descalso has big night for Cards
Daniel Descalso went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Thursday's win over the Diamondbacks.
There were plenty of offensive stars for the Cards in this one, as they slugged five homers in the first five innings. Matt Holliday, Matt Carpenter, Matt Adams and even Shelby Miller also went deep for the Redbirds. After a slow start at the plate, Descalso now has his average up to .278, as he's batting .467 over his last 12 games.

Wed May 22 201301:27Daniel Descalso hits first ever grand slam
Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 with his first career grand slam and an RBI double in the Cardinals' 10-2 rout of the Padres on Tuesday.
Descalso's slam followed an intentional walk to Jon Jay. Descalso entered the game with an ugly .197/.265/.289 line, and he probably wouldn't have been in the lineup if not for David Freese's thumb injury. The home run was his seventh in 813 major league at-bats.

Thu May 9 201310:46Descalso batting .167/.236/.258 over 72 PA
Daniel Descalso is batting just .167/.236/.258 through his first 72 plate appearances this season.
Matt Carpenter has been a standout this year at second base, which has limited Descalso's ability to get regular playing time. He carries zero fantasy relevance.

Thu Apr 4 201303:21Descalso collects 4 hits in 16-inning loss
Daniel Descalso went 4-for-7 with a double, a pair of RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-9, 16-inning marathon loss in Arizona.
Descalso could only watch Cliff Pennington's game-winning single scorch past him in the bottom of the 16th, but he certainly did more than his share to keep the game going as long as it did. In his third consecutive start, Descalso shrugged off a pair of off-nights (1-for-7 to begin the season) to lead St. Louis' offense. As long as David Freese (back) is out, he's worth starting in NL-only leagues. Expect him to improve on last year's .227/.303/.324 slash line.

Wed Mar 27 201315:50Daniel Descalso goes 2-for-3 against Nats
Daniel Descalso went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored against the Nationals on Wednesday.
Descalso played third base today, but it sounds like he'll shift back to second, with Matt Carpenter at third, while David Freese (back) sits out the first week or two of the season. Descalso figures to slide into a utility role afterwards.

Fri Mar 1 201317:12Daniel Descalso knocks in two runs
Daniel Descalso went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI against the Astros on Friday.
While we'd prefer to see Matt Carpenter win the job, Descalso is the favorite to start at second base for the Cardinals. He won't offer a lot of offense, though he should improve on last year's .227/.303/.324 line.
