Rays recalled C Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Durham.
Gimenez narrowly lost the Rays' backup catcher job to Jose Lobaton during the spring, and will now replace him on the active roster as Lobaton is headed for the disabled list. Gimenez will serve as the primary backup for Jose Molina going forward but could also see some work at first base or in the outfield.

Fri Feb 24 201208:47Chris Gimenez in mix for time at catcher
Rays manager Joe Maddon said new acquisition Chris Gimenez is "absolutely in the mix, no question," for playing time at catcher.
Bengie Molina already has some playing time locked up, and Gimenez will compete with Jose Lobaton and Robinson Chirinos for time behind the veteran. It's possible Gimenez could have an edge based on the fact that he can also play first base and the outfield. No matter who wins the spot behind Molina, the Rays catcher spot looks to be a fantasy wasteland this year.

Gimenez strained his oblique in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game, but continued to play through the pain because Miguel Olivo had already exited with cramps in his right leg. Meanwhile, Triple-A Tacoma starting catcher Josh Bard (toe) was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, which means journeyman minor league catcher Jose Yepez is a legitimate contender to start his first major league game on Wednesday.
