Mon Mar 18 201918:39Opening day intrigue: Ichiro keeps 'em guessing about future
TOKYO (AP) — This is the Ichiro effect.Richard Snitzer had never been to Japan. What finally drove the Japanese-American to travel here from his home in Hayward, California, was Ichiro Suzuki; not family ties, not pure wanderlust, but a chance to see a player he called "simply the best."And get this. He's not even a Mariners fan, which he's advertised by wearing his A's jersey around the Tokyo Dome. He'll be there Wednesday when Major League Baseball opens the 2019 season with Seattle facing Oakland to start a two-game series. The 45-year-old Ichiro is expected to play in both. What happens next? Ichiro isn't saying. One thing is sure. It will be great theater."I'll have my phone ready to go, and I'll shoot and stand up and applaud when he bats," Snitzer said. "I just hope he doesn't get the winning hit against the A's. If he hits a home run that doesn't affect the game, I'll be thrilled."A's pitcher Liam Hendriks probably spoke for both teams."We're just happy to be along for the ride,"... [More]
Mon Mar 18 201916:40Amid hoopla around Ichiro and Mariners _ A's are here, too
TOKYO (AP) — Amid all the hoopla surrounding Ichiro Suzuki's return to Japan with the Seattle Mariners, it's been easy to overlook something else: the Oakland Athletics are here, too.The A's are used to being seen as the also-rans, and even relish it. They were a playoff team last season — not the Mariners. And when "Ichiromania" subsides after the season-opening games in the Tokyo Dome on Wednesday and Thursday, the A's will again be under-the-radar favorites."The A's have always been an underdog organization no matter how you put it," A's pitcher Liam Hendriks said. "We enjoy proving people wrong."Teammate Stephen Piscotty, who is playing for his childhood team, put it a different way."I don't think we care too much about how that's viewed," he said. "Last year's expectations weren't all that high, and we showed why that was wrong. We're out this year to take down the division and just play our brand of baseball."Hendriks might be the quintessential Oakland A's player. He grew up in Perth,... [More]
Tue Mar 5 201918:35Rangers' Smyly takes step to return with scoreless outing
MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Texas Rangers left-hander Drew Smyly has seen enough of the spring training practice fields for a while. That can happen when a pitcher misses two major league seasons following reconstructive elbow surgery."They asked me if I wanted to pitch on the back fields and I said no," Smyly said Tuesday after throwing two scoreless innings against the Oakland Athletics. "In my situation, with not having much game experience in quite some time, I want to be in the stadium, in the atmosphere, and I need that. I welcome that right now."In only his second outing since having Tommy John surgery nearly two years ago, the 29-year-old walked one and struck out three — including Stephen Piscotty and Ramon Laureano, who took third strikes."Smyly threw the ball really well," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "The 3-2 curveball to Laureano, if he can do that he's going to be really effective."Woodward said Smyly would likely go three or four innings in his next outing, which the manager... [More]

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Oakland Athletics slugger Khris Davis stepped up his rehab for a left calf strain and began running on the field Friday.Athletics manager Bob Melvin said he expects Davis to be ready by the season-opening series in Japan in mid-March.Davis has yet to play in a spring training game because of the leg injury."At least we got him out on the field," Melvin said. The major leagues' home run leader last season with a career-high 48, Davis has been able to work on his swing even if he can't get into games."They're putting together every day some simulated stuff for him over at the minor league camp," Melvin said. "As long as we keep him healthy, I'm OK with the timetable right now."Will Davis be ready for the Athletics' early opener?"We've got to get there," Melvin said. "My guess is we'll have him in some (spring) games here before we leave" for Japan. The Athletics will play the Cubs on March 13 in Arizona then leave for Japan and play two exhibition games against Nippon on... MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics added depth to their outfield mix by signing outfielder Robbie Grossman to a $2 million, one-year contract Friday.Nick Martini, Stephen Piscotty, and Ramon Laureano are projected to get the majority of playing time in the A's outfield. Oakland manager Bob Melvin said the club would be looking at Grossman as an option in left field."Sitting here now, that's probably the spot he'd play more. We have a lot of depth at the outfield position and I don't think that's a bad thing," said Melvin, who called Grossman "a good pick up."Grossman can earn an additional $200,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $100,000 each for 500 and 550. He acknowledged he was getting a little anxious waiting at home as camps opened. The A's have their first full squad workout Saturday."Being in that situation, it's tough right now, especially how the market is," Grossman said. "I'm excited to land here and excited to be an Oakland A."Grossman spent the last... [More]

Thu Oct 4 201818:44Khris Davis, slugging A's hope to build off surprising year
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics surprised most everyone but themselves.A young team that gained momentum with a strong September a year ago slugged its way right into the playoffs and onto the national radar by hanging tough in the difficult AL West this season.Still, it all ended with the same result: a playoff defeat in an elimination game. After a 97-65 regular season, Oakland lost the wild-card game 7-2 to New York on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium."Unless you play the last game, it's disappointing," manager Bob Melvin said. "So I think when you reflect back and look where we started the year, you know kind of where we came from, it ends up being a good year but it doesn't feel good right now."Khris Davis and the A's rallied all year long to reach the postseason for the first time since 2014 following consecutive last-place division finishes.Davis led the majors with 48 home runs, his third straight 40-homer season.A sensational second-half surge made the difference....
