LHP Brian Duensing, whom the Royals signed to a minor league contract in February with a May 15 opt-out clause, decided to become a free agent. He went 1-0 with a 3.10 ERA in 12 games with Triple-A Omaha, striking out 19 in 20 1/3 innings. Duensing, 33, has a 41-37 record with a 4.13 ERA in 394 big league games, all with the Twins. He was 4-1 with a 4.25 ERA in 2015 with Minnesota.

Duensing retired the only batter he faced in Monday's win over Baltimore. He hasn't give up a run in his last eight innings over six appearances to lower his ERA to 6.30.
Duensing had a terrible start to the season as he gave up nine earned runs and had just a 5:6 K:BB ratio in 10.2 innings in April and May. Duensing has been outstanding against left-handed batters in his career (.609 OPS allowed), but lefties have an .837 OPS against him this year. The Twins have been searching for a lefty specialist as a result with Ryan O'Rourke called from Triple-A to audition for the role. Duensing could move into more high-leverage roles if his recent hot streak continues.

Duensing (oblique) is on track to be activated from the disabled list for Saturday's game against the White Sox, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Duensing will apparently be ready right around the 15-day minimum, as his bullpen sessions have thus far gone well. He should be a useful lefty for the Minnesota bullpen, but he only has two saves and 23 holds since converting to a full-time reliever at the beginning of 2013.

Duensing (intercostal strain) threw a 30-pitch bullpen Monday and will throw to hitters Thursday, Brandon Warne of Fangraphs.com reports.
Duensing was able to get through the bullpen session without reporting any issues as he appears to be making progress in his return from an intercostal strain suffered two weeks ago. There's no exact timetable provided for a return just yet, but if he's able to throw to hitters Thursday without incident, the lefty may be able to move on to a brief rehab stint shortly after.

Duensing (intercostal strain) played catch Wednesday, LaVelle Neal of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
The right-hander started up with his throwing program, as expected, just five days after landing on the DL. He will be limited to playing catch for at least the next couple days. The intercostal strain is reportedly minor, but the Twins don't want it to be an issue for Duensing all season.

Duensing (intercostal strain) will begin a throwing program Wednesday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
The injury forced Duensing onto the 15-day DL late last week, but his ability to start up with a throwing program bodes well for his chances of returning on or shortly after his earliest possible activation date.

Duensing was credited with the save after recording the final four outs of Friday's win over the White Sox.
He entered the game with two outs in the eighth inning while the Twins were protecting a three-run lead. After the Minnesota offense put three additional runs on the board in the top of the ninth, manager Paul Molitor opted to rest closer Glen Perkins and simply keep Duensing in the game to record the final three outs.

Duensing (leg) remains without a timetable for his next bullpen session, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.
Duensing expects to take it easy for the next few days after getting hit by a line drive in Tuesday's spring contest. The left-handed reliever fully expects this absence to be brief, however.

Duensing will be limited for about three or four days after taking a liner off his upper left leg in Tuesday's spring training game against the Blue Jays, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Duensing was removed from the game after absorbing the shot, but he sustained nothing more than a large bruise. While he's unsurprisingly nursing a bit of soreness, Duensing has been cleraed by doctors to continue working out, though it doesn't sound like he'll be available for games. Duensing is projected to serve as the Twins' top left-handed setup man this season behind closer Glen Perkins.
