RHP Dan Straily's pitch count got elevated early in Saturday's game, reaching 97 mph after 4 2/3 innings. By then, he'd allowed three earned runs and a homer. But the Reds rallied to win 13-5, so Straily did not factor in the decision, leaving his personal three-game skid intact.

The move comes on the heels of a poor spot-start Tuesday night, in which he allowed four earned runs on six hits over just 4.2 innings. The 26-year-old now holds a 5.87 ERA in three appearances for Houston on the year, and he'll likely wind up back at Triple-A Fresno, assuming he clears waivers.

Straily took the loss in a spot start Tuesday against Texas, as he allowed four runs on sixx hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

Straily hasn't been able to find it in the majors this year, as he now owns a 5.87 ERA and has walked eight batters in 15.1 innings this year. He has been mediocre at Triple-A, with a 3.65 ERA and 3.71 FIP in 98.2 innings, and at this point he is looking like the definition of a Quad-A player.

Straily has been recalled from Triple-A Fresno and will make a spot start Tuesday against the Rangers, MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reports.

At 26, the former minor league strikeout king is past his prospect status, but he's been credible for Fresno this year, posting a 3.65 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 17 outings. He's made a couple starts with the Astros, too, allowing seven runs (six earned) with an 11:5 K:BB over 10.2 innings.

Straily made his second start of the year and had a quality start though he didn't factor in the decision. In his previous start, Straily had give up five runs -- four earned -- in 4.2 innings at Boston, so Wednesday's outing was a stark contrast to his 2015 debut. It remains to be seen if he'll have a rotation spot when play resumes after the All-Star break.

Whether he will take another turn is still to be determined, but even if he does, fantasy owners will probably want to stay away.

Brett Oberholtzer was sent down after failing to make it out of the second inning in his last start, and it will be Straily who takes his turn in the rotation Friday. Through seven starts for Triple-A Fresno, Straily is 2-3 with a 4.33 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 25:9 K:BB over 35.1 innings.

Straily, who was among the candidates for the Astros' fifth starter job during spring training, has been passed over twice now -- once for Asher Wojciechowski and the other time for Lance McCullers -- when Houston has needed a replacement in the starting rotation. He'll continue to serve as pitching depth in the minors unless improved performance or a rash of injuries to Houston's current starters warrants a promotion to the big league club.

He allowed seven runs on 12 hits over 10.2 innings in Grapefruit League play this spring, falling out of the mix to begin the year as the Astros' fifth starter in the process. Roberto Hernandez, Asher Wojciewchowski, and Sam Deduno are the remaining candidates to fill the role, while Straily could be among the first options called up if the Astros need a replacement in the rotation early in the season.

At his best, Straily can be at least an average pitcher, but his recent walk rate is worrying for his long-term outlook.
