RHP Evan Marshall (skull fracture) began throwing bullpen sessions a month before the start of spring training and appears to be 100 percent. An MRI showed his fractures have healed and the blood been reabsorbed from the bleeding that occurred when he was struck with a line drive while pitching for Triple-A Reno on Aug. 4.

Marshall (head) was recalled by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday and placed on the 60-day DL.
While pitching for Triple-A Reno in early August, Marshall was hit in the head by a line drive, resulting in a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain. He underwent emergency surgery to save his life. Fortunately, Marshall seems to be doing well now. The right-hander recently suggested he's hoping to return to pitching next season.

Marshall (head) was sent home from Barrow Neurological Hospital on Tuesday, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander was transferred to Barrow last Thursday, nine days after suffering a fractured skull as a result of being hit on the temple by a line drive while pitching for Triple-A Reno. Marshall is without a set timetable, but it's hard to imagine he will pitch again this year after such a serious injury.

The Diamondbacks optioned Marshall to Triple-A Reno on Monday.
Marshall tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in Sunday's game, but he has given up nine earned runs in 13.1 innings this season and will likely be unavailable for a day or two after pitching consecutive days, so the Diamondbacks decided to send him down for now. Vidal Nuno was recalled to take Marshall's place in the bullpen.

Marshall took the loss for the second straight day Sunday, after he gave up the game-winning home run to Yasmani Grandal in the bottom of the 13th. He will work in lower-leverage situations until he sorts out his issues, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
Marshall has struggled this season, giving up runs in six of his 10 appearances and three home runs, which is the same number he allowed in 49.1 innings last season. Some time working the middle innings could help him find his form of last year.

Marshall was charged with a blown save and the loss Saturday against the Dodgers after allowing two runs on three hits, while recording just two outs.
Coming into the season, Marshall was viewed as a possible sleeper candidate to close for the D-Backs in the future, but he has been awful so far, posting a 7.45 ERA and 2.28 WHIP in nine appearances. His command has been off so far and he hasn't been putting hitters away, which has led to a drop from 9.9 K/9 all the way to 5.6 K/9. Marshall could need a trip to the minors if he doesn't turn things around quickly.

Marshall gave up a two-run homer to Casey McGehee in the top of the ninth Wednesday and allowed four hits in total in one full inning of work in a 5-2 loss to the Giants.
Marshall got knocked around a bit in this one, but he had a strong spring and his velocity was good, so there is nothing to see here. He remains the DBacks top setup man.

Marshall, who remains the favorite among D-backs relievers to close if Addison Reed (shoulder) isn't ready for Opening Day, has allowed just one run over five innings this spring.
Reed pitched in a "B" game Tuesday morning, and the team remains optimistic that he'll be ready to roll in time for the opener. Nevertheless, Marshall is an intriguing speculative target in case Reed has a setback during the final stages of spring training.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale confirmed that Marshall is an option to close out games if Addison Reed (shoulder) and Brad Ziegler (knee) are unavailable when the regular season begins, the team's official site reports.
While both Reed and Ziegler still have enough time to recover from their injuries and get enough spring training work in to be ready for Opening Day, the availability of both players remains up in the air. Marshall pitched well down the stretch last year, carrying a 31:8 K:BB over 26.2 innings (2.03 ERA) during the second half of 2014.

Marshall could be among the candidates used to close games for Arizona if Addison Reed (shoulder) is forced to begin the season on the disabled list.
Brad Ziegler is returning from knee surgery, so his availability to begin the year isn't guaranteed either. Marshall pitched well after getting promoted to the big leagues last season, mixing three pitches effectively and finishing 2014 with a 2.03 ERA and 31.8 K:BB over 26.2 innings in the second half.

Marshall pitched a scoreless innings on two hits while striking out three in the Diamondbacks' 2-1 loss to the Padres on Tuesday.
Marshall hasn't allowed a run since August 20, a streak spanning five appearances. The two hits are the most he's allowed since that start. His ERA has moved to 2.95 on the season as a result of the outing.
Tue Mar 6 201217:45Marshall takes liner to torso, leaves game
Diamondbacks' prospect right-hander Evan Marshall left Tuesday's Cactus League game after being hit in the torso by a batted ball.
Marshall left the game under his own power. The 21-year-old reliever made his pro debut last year and posted a promising 1.16 ERA and 31/7 K/BB ratio over 31 innings between A-ball and Double-A. Stay tuned for an update on his status.
