Farmer was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Saturday's game.

Farmer was a candidate to start Sunday's game, but Alfredo Simon's struggles Saturday forced the Tigers to use him in a long relief role. He allowed two earned runs on five hits over 3.1 innings of relief work against Minnesota, and struck out four batters. Farmer will now rejoin Detroit's Triple-A affiliate in Toledo.

Farmer is a candidate to start Sunday's game against the Twins, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Whether or not Farmer starts Sunday relies more on Shane Greene than anything else. Greene's availability depends on how many innings he throws in his start with Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday. If Farmer starts, it would be his third of the season for the Tigers. His first two were a struggle, but he'll look to make a better impression the third time around if he indeed receives the start.

Farmer was recalled by the Tigers after Tuesday's loss to Seattle.

Kyle Ryan was sent down after failing to make it through three innings in Tuesday's start, while Farmer is expected to work out of the bullpen for now. The Tigers have an opening in the rotation Sunday, which may end up belonging to Farmer or Shane Greene (who is still at Triple-A) depending on bullpen use in the coming days.

After being officially called up earlier Wednesday, Farmer will head back to Triple-A after a poor start. He wasn't shelled Wednesday like he was in his other start this season (7 ER in 5.0 IP on May 28), but he still failed to make it out of the fifth inning after allowing five earned runs to the Indians. Farmer did rack up seven strikeouts against two walks in his outing Wednesday, however. The Tigers will recall Bruce Rondon on Thursday in a corresponding move.

Justin Verlander was scratched with back stiffness, so now it is obvious why Farmer was rumored to be heading to join the Tigers on Wednesday. The team says Verlander will miss just one start, but if Farmer can pitch well there are other obvious avenues of entry into the Tigers' rotation even if Verlander does only miss one start. Given how bad Farmer was in his other start for the Tigers this year (seven earned runs in five innings) it would be best to stay away in most daily leagues Wednesday. However, his 3.56 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 12 starts at Triple-A give some hope to the idea that he has what it takes to stick at the back of Detroit's rotation.

Farmer is expected to be recalled following Tuesday's game and join the Tigers on Wednesday, Tony Paul of The Detroit News reports.

The move is not yet set in stone, but it should be finalized following Detroit's game on Tuesday. There are no corresponding moves in the works at this point to clear room for Farmer, but the Tigers' healthy rotation indicates that he's headed for a role in the bullpen. In his one start with the Tigers this season, Farmer allowed seven earned runs on nine hits over five innings.

Farmer is listed as the probable starter for Saturday's game against the White Sox, but this transaction hints that Verlander may be ready to rejoin the rotation.

Farmer was charged with seven runs and nine hits in five-plus innings with a walk and a strikeout in Thursday's loss to the Angels.

Farmer (0-1) made his first start of the season and third of his big league career after getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo. Trailing 4-1 heading into the sixth, Farmer allowed the Angels' first four batters to reach base before being yanked. The 24-year-old right-hander, a fifth round draft pick by the Tigers in 2013, was 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA in nine starts this season with the Mud Hens. He'll have a chance to redeem himself in his next scheduled start Wednesday against Oakland.

Farmer has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo to start Thursday's game in Anaheim.

With Kyle Lobstein (shoulder) on the disabled list, Farmer figures to get at least two turns in the rotation. The right-hander is having an excellent season at Triple-A Toledo, with a 2.98 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 50:19 K:BB ratio in 51.1 innings.

Farmer figures to make at least two turns in the rotation, as the Tigers opened up a starting spot for the right-hander by placing Kyle Lobstein on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder soreness. Lobstein will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury along with a possible recovery timetable, and if the issue proves to be long-term, Farmer could make for an intriguing speculative pickup. He was excellent in his nine starts at Toledo, producing a 2.98 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and striking out 50 batters across 51.1 innings.

He has a 50:19 K:BB rate in those innings and is flashing a strong three-pitch mix. He certainly could become a workhorse in a few years.

With both the rotation and bullpen depth for the Tigers improved for 2015, the organization likely felt it would be best to get the 24-year-old some extra time in the minors. He made two starts (four appearances) in the big leagues in 2014, but allowed an unfortunate 12 earned runs over 9.1 innings.

It's still possible that he'll end up stretching out as a starter in the minors at some point this season, but the Tigers seem to view him as a potential option in short relief for 2015 as they seek quality arms to bolster their bullpen depth.

Farmer is expected to compete for the final right-handed reliever spot in the Tigers' bullpen during spring training, the Detroit News reports.

Considering that he started last season as a starter at Low-A West Michigan, it's been a rapid rise for Farmer, who was tagged for 12 runs on 12 hits over 9.1 innings for the Tigers in four appearances -- two starts -- in 2014. If he's stretched out as a starter during spring training, the Tigers will have the flexibility to send him back to the minors as a depth option at Double-A or Triple-A.

Famer was dreadful in his last start against the Twins, allowing more earned runs than outs recorded. With rosters expanding, however, there looks to be a spot on the team for him, whether it be as an emergency spot starter, or in long relief.

He needed 54 pitches to completely 1.1 innings, and the Twins touched him up for seven runs on five hits in the process. Farmer was called up to serve as the 26th man for Saturday's doubleheader, but he'll be optioned back to Triple-A Toledo prior to Sunday's game.

Farmer will be promoted as the 26th man for the Tigers' doubleheader on Saturday.

With an extra game on the slate, Farmer will make a spot start against the Twins at Target Field before returning to Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers optioned Farmer to Triple-A Toledo following Wednesday's game, James Schmehl of MLive Media Group reports.

Farmer was called up from Double-A Erie to start Wednesday's game, and he gave up four earned runs over five innings. However, he doesn't appear to be a long-term option having made just two starts above the High-A level -- both with Erie. He will get a chance to see what he can do at the Triple-A level and try to remain in the conversation for a return to the big leagues before the season ends.

The Tigers purchased Farmer's contract from Double-A Erie on Wednesday. He'll take the hill against the Pirates, matching up against right-hander Vance Worley.

Although Farmer posted incredible numbers at Low-A West Michigan (10-5, 2.60 ERA, 116 strikeouts in 103.2 innings), it should be noted that at 23 years old, he's rather old for that level. Moreover, he's made just two starts at Erie since he was promoted there in late July, making it difficult to trust him as a streaming option given his lack of experience against high-quality competition. The Tigers are simply counting on Farmer to eat up innings in Wednesday's spot start with the team's bullpen receiving heavy usage in recent days.
