RHP Buck Farmer (5-5) finished his 2017 season with a strong start against the playoff-bound Twins. Farmer allowed one run on four hits and four walks in five innings. Farmer snapped a personal three-game losing streak in which he had allowed 13 earned runs in his previous three starts. The one run allowed was his lowest since a scoreless outing on June 7. He finished with a 6.75 ERA in 11 starts with Detroit.

RHP Buck Farmer did something that few Detroit starters have done this month -- give the Tigers a five-inning start. But he also gave up five runs doing it, which is not the way to win a ballgame. Could he be better suited to the bullpen? "I'm sure they'll have that discussion as to whether he's a reliever or a starter. Al and his staff and whomever they bring in (to manage) will make that decision." It wasn't like Farmer got rocked, but it was nick, nick, nick as he went through his five innings. He struck out five, walked three and allowed seven hits. Farmer was also the latest Detroit pitcher struck by a batted ball, taking a hard grounder off his left foot in the second inning.

RHP Buck Farmer admits he started working the edges of the plate too much and that led to him getting taken out of Friday night's second game without retiring any of the four batters he faced in the fourth. "When I was 0-2 I was still trying to nibble," he said. "You do that and all of a sudden they're in the driver's seat. I only gave up three hits but I walked three and hit one. I put all their runners on base (in the fourth). You can't do that." He was charged with five runs and wound up throwing 80 pitches in his three-plus innings.

RHP Buck Farmer (3-1) gave up three runs in 5 2/3 innings Saturday against the Chicago White Sox. He was called up from Triple-A Toledobefore the game. Farmer is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings against the White Sox this season.

RHP Buck Farmer, whose spot in the rotation looked so solid two starts back, came up with a second straight clunker Sunday and was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo after the game. Farmer gave up seven runs to Tampa Bay on three home runs -- a two-run shot to 1B Logan Morrison in the second, a solo blast by C Derek Norris in the third plus a grand slam by RF Steven Souza Jr. in the same inning. Detroit brought back RHP Anibal Sanchez for a 'show me' start Monday so he'll take Farmer's spot for at least one turn. "Big league hitters are tough," manager Brad Ausmus said. "A lot of them have been here for close to 10 years. They're a lot more adept at taking advantage of mistakes. You might get by a couple times, making mistakes, but they'll take advantage eventually."

RHP Buck Farmer just didn't have it Tuesday night. He looked like the Buck Farmer who was 0-6 over the previous three seasons instead of the Buck Farmer who had pitched 13 scoreless innings in his first two starts, both wins, this year. Farmer gave up five hits and two runs in the first and four runs on four hits (on a pair of two-run home runs) in the third.

RHP Buck Farmer takes the ball for Tuesday's series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Farmer (2-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Angels last Wednesday, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out five. The 26-year-old has never faced the Diamondbacks and is 0-0 with a 6.75 ERA in five interleague games (two starts). Chris Iannetta is 1-for-2 with a double lifetime against Farmer.

RHP Buck Farmer was recalled from Triple-A Toledo and started Wednesday's game. He was outstanding, tossing 6 2/3 scoreless innings while giving up just three singles and striking out five. Farmer, who won his only other start of the season against the Chicago White Sox on May 27, collected his second career victory. Manager Brad Ausmus said Farmer is now a member of the rotation. He replaces Matthew Boyd, who was optioned to Toledo last week to work on mechanical issues.
