Sat Aug 14 201011:34Arencibia will ride bench after all
After originally saying that J.P. Arencibia would get most of the starts while John Buck was on the DL, Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston has reversed course and says Jose Molina will be the primary catcher.
"You're asking a kid to come in and catch a staff at the major league level.... He doesn't know the hitters and you'd like to have them (pitchers and catchers) in sync," Gaston said. "So I might let Molina catch most of the games (until Buck returns) and not let the kid worry about it all." We understand Gaston not wanting to mess with his pitchers, but it surely wouldn't have hurt to give him the bulk of the playing time for a couple weeks. Regardless, Buck is expected back from the DL next week, at which point Arencibia will return to Triple-A.

Sat Aug 7 201016:45Jays' Arencibia homers twice in ML debut
J.P. Arencibia was 4-for-5 with two homers and three RBI in his major league debut against the Rays on Saturday afternoon.
That sound you hear is everyone rushing to the waiver wire at once. Arencibia made quite the first impression Saturday, slugging a two-run homer on the very first pitch he saw in the big leagues. He is the first Jays player to homer in his first major league at-bat since Junior Felix did it on May 4, 1989. The 24-year-old backstop also singled and doubled, finishing just a triple short of the cycle. He slugged 31 homers with Triple-A Las Vegas this season, so while his batting average isn't likely to stick, the power will. Go ahead and pick him up in mixed leagues.
Fri Aug 6 201018:41Arencibia to do "most of the catching"
Manager Cito Gaston said that the recently recalled J.P. Arencibia "will probably do most of the catching," while he's with the club.
Arencibia was called up to take the spot of the injured John Buck. He is, however, not playing Friday, nor will he play Sunday. The reason for that is because Gaston wants Jose Molina to catch Brandon Morrow Sunday, and Saturday is a day game after a night game. Arencibia has had a monster year at Triple-A with 31 home runs and a .999 OPS. He's worth looking at in mixed leagues.

Mon Jul 12 201010:57Jays' catching prospect mashing at Triple-A
Blue Jays catching prospect J.P. Arencibia hit his Pacific Coast League-leading 25th home run over the weekend.
The 24-year-old Arencibia was selected 21st overall in the 2007 June MLB Amateur Draft and is batting an impressive .319/.369/.661 with 52 extra-base hits in 301 at-bats this year. John Buck is having a breakout season in the majors, but he is only signed to a one-year deal and Arencibia could prove himself ready for the full-time big league gig by the end of 2010.
