Mon Feb 25 201317:50Volstad delivers two scoreless frames
Chris Volstad tossed two scoreless innings Monday afternoon against the Rangers.
Volstad gave up two hits and no walks and didn't notch any strikeouts. He benefitted from a pair of double plays turned behind him. After posting a 6.31 ERA over 21 starts with the Cubs last season, he'll need a big spring in order to secure a rotation spot.

Royals designated RHP Chris Volstad for assignment.
Volstad was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in late-October, but he wasn't really needed after the Royals acquired Ervin Santana and re-signed Jeremy Guthrie. The 26-year-old right-hander had a terrible 6.31 ERA in 21 starts this season while making $2.65 millon, so he isn't worth the raise he figured to make in arbitration, but he shouldn't have trouble attracting interest as a free agent.

Royals claimed RHP Chris Volstad off waivers from the Cubs.
Volstad was highly-ineffective with the Cubs last season, but will be entering his age-26 campaign and still holds value as a sixth starter. After making $2.65 million in 2012, he seems likely to avoid arbitration and sign for close to the league minimum this winter.

Tue Oct 2 201222:56Chris Volstad pitches well in loss to Astros
Chris Volstad pitched well in his final start of the season Tuesday, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits in his seven innings of work.
Volstad fanned six without walking a batter. Jason Castro belted a solo homer in the second inning to get the Astros on the board, and an unearned tally would be added later in the frame. Volstad completes a nightmarish season with a 3-12 record, 6.31 ERA and 61/43 K/BB ratio over 111 1/3 innings.

Chris Volstad struggled again in Friday's no-decision against the Cardinals, surrendering three runs on six hits in his five innings of work.
Volstad also issued three walks on the afternoon without recording a strikeout. He needed 116 pitches to battle through five innings, and hasn't lasted to the sixth inning in any of his last five outings. He'll take a disappointing 3-10 record, 6.22 ERA and 55/43 K/BB into Thursday's start against the Rockies in Colorado.

Tue Sep 11 201200:00Volstad notches win Monday vs. Astros
Chris Volstad tossed five innings of one-run ball Monday in a win over the Astros.
Volstad walked five and threw just 56 out of 99 pitches for strikes, but limited the light-hitting Astros to just four hits. The only run scored on an RBI single by Jason Castro in the bottom of the fourth. Volstad has now won three out of his last four starts after going winless in 24 straight. He'll get the Pirates this weekend, but shouldn't be trusted in fantasy leagues.

Wed Sep 5 201222:14Volstad allows five runs in loss
Chris Volstad surrendered five earned runs in five innings Wednesday in a loss to the Nationals.
Volstad yielded nine hits -- three of which were home runs -- and walked four Washington batters. He's been a major disappointment in his short time with the Cubs and is now sporting a brutal 6.23 ERA and 1.53 WHIP on the year. The tall right-hander holds zero fantasy value.

Sun Aug 26 201220:11Chris Volstad finally earns victory
Chris Volstad finally earned his first win of the season in Sunday's 5-0, rain-shortened victory over the Rockies, allowing just three hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The game was called after eight innings. Volstad struck out three and walked three in notching his first victory in 14 starts as a Cub. Despite the rare good afternoon, however, he's still the owner of a 6.28 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 44/24 K/BB ratio through 76 innings. He won't be worth streaming against the Giants in Chicago on Friday.

Fri Aug 10 201200:22Volstad solid in no-decision vs. Reds
Chris Volstad pitched solidly in a no-decision against the Reds on Thursday, giving up three runs on six hits over six frames.
Volstad walked two and struck out four on the night. While he's been brutal on the season, posting a 6.94 ERA over 58 1/3 innings, he has now had consecutive quality starts since returning to the rotation on August 4. He struggled to keep the ball in the yard however, as Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier each blasted solo homers in the game. He'll again go in search of his first victory of the season when he does battle against the Astros at home on Tuesday.

Wed Jul 11 201208:47Volstad seeing sports pyschologist
Chris Volstad has been seeing a sports psychologist to help him from pressing while he's on the mound.
Volstad's father, Ken Volstad, told the Palm Beach Post that the 25-year-old right-hander has been pressing for a long time due to a lack of confidence and that the issue wasn't really dealt with during his time with the Marlins. "A new Chris Volstad will emerge from here on in," said Volstad's father. "He's a different person mentally. It's not going to be an event. It's a process." Volstad is 0-7 with a 7.94 ERA in nine starts at the major league level this season and is currently pitching with Triple-A Iowa.

Sat Jun 30 201213:42Volstad to start Tuesday against Braves
Chris Volstad is scheduled to start next Tuesday against the Braves.

Fri Jun 29 201211:43Volstad, Coleman considered for start
The Cubs will decide between Casey Coleman and Chris Volstad to start next Tuesday against the Braves.
Neither are appealing options, as Volstad held a 7.46 ERA in eight starts earlier this season, and Coleman allowed seven runs in a relief appearance earlier this week. Whoever gets the call can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Fri May 18 201214:21Cubs option struggling Volstad to minors
Cubs optioned RHP Chris Volstad to Triple-A Iowa.
It's no surprise after Volstad's latest blowup Thursday against the Phillies pushed his ERA up to 7.46 and record to 0-6. The former top prospect has simply failed to have any sort of long-term consistency over his career and will now try to work on things in the minors. Travis Wood will take his spot in the rotation next week.

Sat May 5 201216:05Chris Volstad knocked around again
Chris Volstad was knocked around again Saturday, yielding five runs on four hits and three walks over just five frames in a loss to the Dodgers.
Volstad moved up a day to start in place of the ill Matt Garza, and he struggled once again. The tall right-hander's ERA now sits at 6.55, and he's yet to register a quality start in six tries. The Cubs have to be thinking about booting him from the rotation in favor of Travis Wood at this point. If he's still in the starting five, Volstad will get the Brewers next week.

Thu Mar 29 201218:42Chris Volstad blasted by Padres
Chris Volstad wasn't so good Thursday against the Padres, giving up six runs on nine hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings.
He only recorded two strikeouts and was taken deep by Jason Bartlett. Volstad had given up just one run in his first three spring outings to earn a spot among the starting five, but he was due for an outing like this. He can't be counted on for much even in NL-only fantasy leagues this season.

Sun Mar 25 201208:56Chris Volstad to open year in Cubs' rotation
Cubs manager Dale Sveum told SiriusXM radio's Jim Bowden there's "probably" one rotation spot open and that Chris Volstad is already in.
Jeff Samardzija also is a ''virtual lock,'' leaving Randy Wells to start out in the bullpen. Volstad threw six innings against minor leaguers Saturday and has put himself in the driver's seat for the final spot in the rotation. Wells has not allowed a run in four Cactus League games.
