Tue Mar 13 201219:50Chris Volstad looks good again
Chris Volstad had his good stuff again for the Cubs Tuesday, tossing three scoreless innings on two hits in a win over the Giants.
He's now twirled six scoreless frames to kick off his spring to perhaps put himself in the driver's seat for the final spot in the Cubs rotation. He could potentially churn out some value in NL-only formats this season, but history suggests that we shouldn't count on much.

Tue Jan 17 201220:00Cubs, Volstad agree on one-year contract
The Cubs and RHP Chris Volstad avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.655 million contract.
Volstad, who was recently acquired from the Marlins for Carlos Zambrano, was arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason. The 25-year-old right-hander had an underwhelming 4.89 ERA over 29 starts last season, but advanced metrics like FIP and xFIP say that he pitched much better than the results indicate. He should have a spot in the back-end of the Cubs' starting rotation this season.

Thu Jan 5 201213:24Cubs acquire RHP Volstad from Marlins
Cubs acquired RHP Chris Volstad from the Marlins for RHP Carlos Zambrano and cash considerations.
The Cubs had to cover most of Zambrano's salary, but they did get something of value in return. While Volstad has a 4.73 ERA over the past two seasons, a number of advanced metrics suggest that he has pitched better than his results indicate. The 25-year-old right-hander is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter and is under team control through 2014. He figures to join a rotation which will include some combination of Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, Travis Wood and Andrew Cashner.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, Chris Volstad is going to the Cubs as part of the Carlos Zambrano trade.
It's not yet known if there are other players involved, or how much of Zambrano's contract will the Cubs will have to eat. Volstad, 25, was the 16th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft. He posted a 4.89 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 117/49 K/BB ratio in 165 2/3 innings last season for the Marlins.

Tue Nov 15 201116:43Volstad a non-tender candidate with Marlins
Chris Volstad is a non-tender candidate this offseason.
Volstad wasn't invited when the Marlins unveiled their new uniforms last Friday, which is an indication that the front office could be leaning toward cutting him loose or trading him before the December 12 deadline. "I don't really know that I could get mad at them," said Volstad. "I mean, it would have been cool to be a part of it but I don't know really what their plans are. "Maybe my plans are with them or not, but maybe they're not 100 percent sure yet." Volstad, 25, went 5-13 with a 4.89 ERA and 117/49 K/BB ratio over 165 2/3 innings this season. He could make between $2-3 million in his first year of arbitration.

Wed Sep 28 201118:49Chris Volstad takes loss in finale
Chris Volstad allowed two runs and three hits over six innings in his start against the Nationals on Wednesday.
Volstad took the loss to finish 5-13 with a 4.89 ERA, but with five straight solid starts to end the year, he pretty much guaranteed that he'll open next year in Florida's rotation. There isn't much upside here, but we still gotta think he's going to establish himself as an adequate fourth starter in time.

Sat Aug 20 201101:45Chris Volstad takes 10th loss for Marlins
Chris Volstad fanned seven Friday but still took his 10th loss after giving up four runs in five innings against the Padres.
Volstad has been none too impressive in two starts against poor offensive teams since returning to the majors. The Marlins may put him in the bullpen next month if this keeps up.

Fri Aug 12 201116:28Volstad to start Saturday against Giants
Chris Volstad will start Saturday against the Giants.
Javier Vazquez was originally scheduled to make the start, but he left the team this week to attend to a family emergency in his native Puerto Rico. Volstad returned from the minors this week after posting a 4.42 ERA and 14/9 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings with Triple-A New Orleans. Those in fantasy leagues can do better.

Wed Aug 10 201122:44Chris Volstad promoted
Marlins recalled RHP Chris Volstad from Triple-A New Orleans.
Volstad hasn't done much better at New Orleans than he did for the Marlins, posting a 4.42 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 14/9 K/BB ratio over 18 1/3 innings, but evidently the Fish are ready to give him another shot in the rotation after Brad Hand was roughed up his last time out. He'll return to a 5.58 ERA in 20 starts for Florida.

Marlins optioned RHP Chris Volstad to Triple-A New Orleans.
Volstad, 24, allowed eight hits and four runs in a five-inning start Friday against the Mets and has watched his ERA balloon to 5.58. He'll try to pull it together against a lower level of competition before potentially returning to the Marlins in August or September.

Mon Jul 18 201109:34Marlins could be losing patience with Volstad
The Marlins could be losing patience with starting pitcher Chris Volstad.
Volstad got knocked out early in Florida's win over the Cubs on Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits in just three innings of work. The outing was Volstad's shortest of the season. "I saw a young guy who's been - how long in the big leagues, three years? It's time for him to step up and get tough," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. Volstad has posted a 9.69 ERA through his first 13 innings of work this month. He'll get the Mets at home this weekend. If he doesn't show progress, his rotation spot could be in jeopardy.

Sun Jul 17 201118:03Volstad lousy, but Marlins win
Chris Volstad got knocked out early in Florida's win over the Cubs on Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits in just three innings of work.

Sun Jul 10 201116:07Chris Volstad has another quality day
Chris Volstad allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work on Sunday, improving to 5-8 in Florida's 5-4 win over the Astros.
He struck out six while walking only one. Don't look now, but Volstad has won three of his past four starts, and turned in quality outings in six of his past eight starts. After looking ready for demotion in late May, he's now a legitimate NL-only league option.

Thu Jun 30 201118:49Chris Volstad records win over A's
Chris Volstad allowed just an unearned run over seven innings Thursday in a win over the A's.
Volstad win despite not recording a strikeout in the game. He's at his best when he's getting grounders, and he did that today, with 14 of his outs coming on the ground. It's the left-handed power hitters that tend to carve up Volstad, and the A's just don't have much in that department.

Sun Jun 26 201101:13Chris Volstad earns first victory since April
Chris Volstad held the Mariners to two runs in 6 2/3 innings as the Marlins won a home game in Seattle on Saturday.
Volstad won for the first time since April 26. He's actually turned in four quality starts in five tries this month, pulling his ERA back down to 5.42. Still, we wouldn't want to use him in NL-only leagues with a start in Texas up next on the schedule.

Tue Jun 14 201123:00Volstad knocked around by Phils
Chris Volstad was knocked around by the Phillies Tuesday, permitting eight runs on 10 hits and two walks over 5 2/3 innings.
Volstad had actually pitched pretty well of late, but he was awful from the get-go in this one, serving up four home runs in the Phillies'offensive onslaught. The right-hander now holds an ugly 6.07 ERA and 1.50 WHIP on the year, and he might be in danger of losing his job if not for the Marlins' dearth of starting pitching depth. Volstad gets the Rays over the weekend.
