Nate Lowe's idea of competing to be the everyday first baseman for the Texas Rangers was to take pitches on purpose early in spring training, even if three of them were strikes. Ronald Guzman felt the urgency of something to prove from the start after failing to win the job in manager Chris Woodward's first two seasons and entering this camp out of minor league options. The competition in Surprise, Arizona, might be closer than the Rangers thought when they acquired Lowe from Tampa Bay in a swap of mostly minor leaguers during the offseason. Guzman has three spring training homers to go with his elite defensive skills as Texas also tries him in the outfield as a way to keep him on the roster. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Infielder Nate Lowe was traded from the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays to the Texas Rangers on Thursday for minor league catcher and outfielder Heriberto Hernandez. As part of the swap, Tampa Bay also acquired minor league infielder Osleivis Basabe and minor league outfielder Alexander Ovalles, and Texas obtained minor league first baseman Jake Guenther and a player to be named. The 25-year-old Lowe hit .224 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 21 games last season was was 0 for 3 in the wild card playoff against Toronto, his only postseason appearances. A first baseman and third baseman, he has a .251 average with 11 homers and 30 RBIs in two seasons. Guenther, 23, hit .320 with two homers and 30 RBIs in 2019 for Princeton of the rookie level Appalachian League.
