Sat Aug 22 202021:34Nationals' Strasburg is done for season, awaits hand surgery
WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg’s season is over. The Washington Nationals transferred the star right-hander to the 60-day injured list Saturday. Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Strasburg will undergo carpal tunnel surgery next week.Strasburg, last year’s World Series MVP, was first placed on the injured list Aug. 15 with carpal tunnel neuritis of the right hand. “Hopefully surgery goes well,” Martinez said. “The biggest thing is that surgery relieves anything he has and he’s able to rehab and come back strong next spring training. Long-term goal, that’s what we’re hoping for.”The 32-year-old pitcher signed a seven-year, $245 million contract with Washington during the offseason. He was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts in 2020. Strasburg was scratched from his first two scheduled starts, and left his Aug. 14 start after only two-thirds of an inning. “He took a shot; obviously it didn’t work,” Martinez said. “He probably could have taken another shot but we just needed to get it fixed. We don’t want to prolong anything.”The move allowed Washington to add right-hander Wil Crowe to the 40-man roster. Crowe, a second-round pick in the 2017 draft, will make his major league debut by starting the second game of the Nationals’ doubleheader on Saturday against the Miami Marlins. Crowe will serve as Washington’s 29th man.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sat Aug 22 202003:45LEADING OFF: No ball in New York; Francona still away
A look at what's happening around the majors today:BIG APPLE BREAKThe Subway Series scheduled for this weekend has been postponed after two members of the Mets tested positive for the coronavirus Thursday. The Mets say they won’t have any team workouts this weekend, instead letting players and coaches isolate at home while New York and Major League Baseball undertake more testing and contact tracing measures. It’s a well-timed pause in the season for the Yankees, who placed shortstop Gleyber Torres and left-hander James Paxton on their crowded injured list Friday. New York was already without star hitters Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu, as well as left-hander Zack Britton, right-hander Tommy Kahnle and backup catcher Kyle Higashioka. Judge was expected to be activated Saturday after recovering from a strained right calf.NO TITOThe Indians don’t expect to have Terry Francona on the bench this weekend for a series against Detroit after the manager had a scheduled medical procedure... Mon Aug 17 202014:53Tigers to start Mize in major league debut against White Sox
CHICAGO (AP) — The Detroit Tigers are calling up three prospects, including right-hander Casey Mize, this week to make their major league debuts against the Chicago White Sox.Tigers general manager Al Avila said Mize is scheduled to start Wednesday night at Chicago after left-hander Tarik Skubal goes Tuesday night against the White Sox. Mize, 23, was the No. 1 pick overall in the 2018 amateur draft.Avila said Monday that infielder Isaac Paredes also was called up and infielder Dawel Lugo was designated for assignment. The rebuilding Tigers have been patiently developing their young players, but a combination of their talent and the team's needs led to the moves.“We felt they were ready,” Avila said.Mize and Skubal have not pitched above Double-A.The time was right for Mize at least in part because right-hander Ivan Nova went on the injured list Saturday with triceps tendinitis.Avila has resisted the temptation to put Mize on the mound in the majors, including earlier this summer when the... Sat Aug 15 202016:44World Series MVP Strasburg on IL with nerve issue in hand
WASHINGTON (AP) — World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg was put on the 10-day injured list by the Washington Nationals on Saturday because of the recurring nerve issue in his throwing hand that delayed his start to the 2020 season and cut short his second appearance after just 16 pitches. The team classified his injury as “carpal tunnel neuritis of the right hand.”Manager Dave Martinez said Strasburg would get nerve tests on his hand Monday, something the skipper referred to as “the first step” in trying to figure out what is going on. “I don’t think this is going to get better soon. We tried,” Martinez said Saturday. “So right now, we’re just going to try see if we can get him healthy.”The 32-year-old Strasburg, who signed a $245 million, seven-year contract with Washington this offseason, is 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two starts this season. “He tried to pitch with it. It didn’t work out,” Martinez said. “This guy’s a big part of our future and we don't want to jeopardize anything at this point.”After... [More]

Fri Aug 14 202021:34Nationals RHP Strasburg leaves with injury after 16 pitches
BALTIMORE (AP) — Washington Nationals star right-hander Stephen Strasburg left Friday night's game after throwing just 16 pitches. There was no immediate word from the Nationals on the type of injury that forced him off the mound during the first inning of a game against the Orioles.Strasburg got a late start on the season because of a nerve issue in his right hand. This was his second start, the first coming last Sunday against Baltimore. Before Friday's game, Washington manager Dave Martinez spoke about taking it slow with Strasburg, who went 5-0 in the postseason for the 2019 World Series champions.“Based on our conversations with him, he feels like he can work through this injury," Martinez said. “But I want to be smart, I really do. I’ve got to be smart, not just for right now but for the future. He’s a big part of our future, a big part of what we do here. So we want to make sure we take care of him.” Strasburg took the loss in the game he started Sunday, a suspended affair that was completed on Friday before he took the mound for the schedule matchup against the Orioles. He gave up a solo homer to Anthony Santander before leaving the game after getting the second out of the inning.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Aug 14 202002:33LEADING OFF: Marlins home at last, Cole seeks 20th straight
A look at what’s happening around the majors today:HOME AT LASTMiami finally gets to play its pandemic-delayed opener at Marlins Park, which has a new look for 2020 thanks to cozier dimensions and a switch to artificial turf. Also, there will be a first-place team in the home dugout when the Marlins (8-4) host Atlanta. The Marlins departed for a season-opening three-game trip more than three weeks ago. Their 23-day road odyssey was necessitated by a coronavirus outbreak that infected at least 18 players during the opening weekend in Philadelphia. Miami’s season was suspended for a week and the schedule scrambled, including the postponement of eight games at Marlins Park.“You feel like you’ve got a quick trip,” manager Don Mattingly said. “You pack hardly nothing, and the next thing you know, a month later, you’ve got to pay rent again.”STRASBURG’S STATUSWorld Series MVP Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to make his second start of the season for the Washington Nationals at Baltimore, still... Thu Aug 13 202016:33Nationals' Strasburg ejected for arguing - from the stands
NEW YORK (AP) — A pitcher getting ejected for arguing balls and strikes — on his day off? And, from the stands? Nationals star Stephen Strasburg earned one of baseball's most unique ejections — probably ever — in the third inning of Washington's game against the New York Mets on Thursday.Strasburg was sitting in Section 121 at Citi Field in this socially distant season because he’s scheduled to start Friday against Baltimore Orioles. He was apparently unhappy with the strike zone of plate umpire Carlos Torres after Austin Voth’s 2-2 pitch to Pete Alonso on the outside corner was ruled a ball.Moments later, Torres ejected last year's World Series MVP, though it took a few seconds to realize who had been tossed.Someone was heard yelling: “You’re (expletive) brutal” shortly before television cameras captured Strasburg doffing his cap as he walked up the staircase on his way out of the park. “Sorry, folks — sorry, FCC,” Mets broadcaster Gary Cohen said on SNY.The usually stoic Strasburg appeared to be grinning underneath his blue mask as he made his exit.—More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Mon Aug 10 202012:43AP study: MLB average salary under $1.3M; Scherzer tops list
NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball’s eye-popping salaries took an astonishing dive during the coronavirus pandemic to their lowest level in nearly a quarter-century, according to a study by The Associated Press. Washington pitcher Max Scherzer topped the shortened season’s list at $17.8 million, his income partially protected by a huge signing bonus. That is the lowest amount for baseball’s highest-paid player since Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Kevin Brown made $15.7 million in 2000.Players receive about 37% of their 2020 pay under the formula agreed to in March by MLB and the union, a figure the union wound up keeping during bitter negotiations that failed to produce an agreement. Commissioner Rob Manfred unilaterally announced a 60-game regular-season schedule that started four months late on July 23, down from the normal 162 games for each team.Salaries averaged $1,295,942 on expanded opening-day rosters after prorated pay was factored in, according to the AP study. Sun Aug 9 202015:52In DC, city of gridlock, tarp stymies Nationals grounds crew
WASHINGTON (AP) — When it rained in the top of the sixth inning of the Washington Nationals' game against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, it really poured on the infield dirt, because the grounds crew had trouble unrolling the giant tarp used to protect the diamond. The cover got twisted, so the 15 members of the Nationals Park crew needed more than 15 minutes to get the entire thing spread out over the dirt — and even then, it was upside-down, with a sponsor logo facing the ground. There were large puddles between the bases, a result of the sort of gridlock with which the nation's capital is all too familiar. In all, a process usually completed in just a couple of minutes took more than 20 for the tarp to be properly put in place. And by then, the shower was done, anyway, leaving the sun was peeking through the clouds.Once the tarp was removed, then began the job of trying to make the infield dirt dry enough to allow for a Major League Baseball game resume. Trucks were driven out so that... [More]

WASHINGTON (AP) — World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg is scheduled to make his season debut for the Washington Nationals on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles after being sidelined by a nerve problem in his pitching hand.Strasburg missed what would have been his first two appearances of 2020 after making all 33 starts last year and then becoming the first pitcher to finish a postseason with a 5-0 record. “The tingling in his thumb is gone, and that’s a good sign. We watched him and he’s throwing some really good bullpens. That was the big thing for me: Nothing in his mechanics has changed. Everything’s good,” manager Dave Martinez said Friday before Washington's series opener against visiting Baltimore. “So based on a conversation with him, he feels good,” Martinez added. “He wants to pitch. He’s ready to pitch on Sunday.”For how long is another question.“We’re going to watch him.
