St. Louis Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal is in need of Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching elbow and will miss the rest of the regular season, the team announced Wednesday.Cardinals general manager Mike Girsch told reporters that Rosenthal will undergo the surgery next week. The team had transferred the right-hander from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL earlier in the day.Rosenthal had been placed on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday with what was called "right posterior elbow irritation."In 50 games this season, Rosenthal is 3-4 with a 3.40 ERA and 11 saves. Minnesota Twins right fielder Robbie Grossman fractured his left thumb in an outfield collision Thursday during the second game of the doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians.Grossman collided with center fielder Byron Buxton on a flyout in the second inning and was on the ground for a few moments. He stayed in the game and singled in the bottom of the inning.However, Grossman was replaced by pinch hitter Max Kepler before his at-bat in the third inning. Grossman is hitting .241 this season with seven homers and 35 RBIs.--Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez left the opening game of the doubleheader after being hit in the right forearm by a second-inning fastball from Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson.Ramirez hopped down the first base line before dropping to a knee to be examined by a trainer.
