Tue Feb 25 202013:35'The wall won' _ Kemp tries to revive career with Marlins
MIAMI (AP) — Fans of The Clash, The Bobby Fuller Four and the Cincinnati Reds can agree Matt Kemp had the quote of the year after he broke a rib chasing a flyball last April.“I fought the wall, and the wall won,” Kemp said.He broke a rib and missed the final five months of the season. Now, at 35, the three-time All-Star outfielder is mounting a comeback with the Miami Marlins. Kemp waves off the idea Miami is where great outfielder careers come to die. Three-time All-Star Curtis Granderson batted .183 with the Marlins in his final season last year. Seven-time major league hits leader Ichiro Suzuki hit .256 in his final three full seasons with Miami in 2015-17.“That’s not my story,” Kemp said. “I’m for real. I can still do some damage out there. This is a redemption year. I had 40 at-bats last year, but I was an All-Star in 2018. Seriously, I can still play.”Kemp believes he's poised for a comeback that extends beyond 2020, and he wants to play at least four or five more years. But first,... [More]
Mon Feb 17 202015:09Marlins believe they have 'a lot more talent' in 2020
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Even the Miami Marlins can be optimistic at the start of spring training, which is why president of baseball operations Michael Hill stood facing the practice fields before the first full-squad workout Monday and didn't flinch at what's to come.“This is a camp where there is as much talent as I've ever seen,” he said. That's only modest praise given that the Marlins have endured 10 consecutive losing seasons, all with Hill in the front office. After losing 105 times in 2019, they could be much improved and still finish last in the NL East. But the Marlins do believe they're finally on the upswing in Year 3 of the Derek Jeter regime.“It's time,” manager Don Mattingly said. “There’s a lot more talent; there’s a lot more veteran talent,” Hill said. “You can look at a deeper pitching staff, a better bullpen, a deeper lineup. The expectation to win more games comes with that.”Among those with loftier expectations is majority owner Bruce Sherman, part of Jeter's group that... [More]
Sat Feb 8 202015:37Marlins' Mattingly bothered by sign-stealing, Jeter vote
MIAMI (AP) — Baseball’s news cycle of late has been dominated by the sign-stealing scandal that led to upheaval in Houston and Boston, as well as Derek Jeter missing out on being a unanimous selection for Baseball’s Hall of Fame.Don Mattingly was bothered by both stories.Miami’s manager spoke out Saturday at the team’s annual FanFest, expressing dismay over how Jeter — the Marlins’ CEO — was one vote away from appearing on 100% of the ballots submitted in this year’s Hall of Fame voting, as well as the sign-stealing controversy that is could well taint Houston’s World Series win in 2017 and Boston’s title in 2018.“You could see it kind of coming, honestly, with the technology, with the cameras, just how fast that has come to the forefront with everything you can do with replay,” Mattingly said. “You could actually see how it could ... how something could start to happen. Unfortunately, it did.”Houston manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow were suspended for a year by MLB Commissioner... [More]

Tue Sep 17 201917:38Phillies lose Dickerson for season with broken left foot
ATLANTA (AP) — Philadelphia outfielder Corey Dickerson will not return this season after an injury to his left foot was determined to be a fracture. The Phillies placed Dickerson on the 60-day injured list before Tuesday night's game at Atlanta. He fouled a ball off the foot on Sept. 4 and had not played since Sept. 11. Initial X-rays were negative, so Tuesday's announcement was a surprise.Philadelphia acquired Dickerson from Pittsburgh on July 31. He hit .304 overall with 12 homers and 59 RBIs, including .293 with eight homers with the Phillies.Right-hander Edubray Ramos was reinstated from the 60-day IL. Sun Sep 15 201917:37Vzquez homers twice, drives in 5, Red Sox beat Phillies
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A little lunchtime wisdom served Christian Vázquez well.Vázquez homered twice, including his first career grand slam, and drove in a career-high five runs to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The Red Sox catcher had gone without a homer for 13 straight games and had just one in 25 contests entering Sunday. He was stuck on 19 homers and trying to reach 20 — probably trying too hard. Over lunch on Thursday with manager Alex Cora and former big league slugger Carlos Delgado, Vázquez listened as the two told him not to press."Don't look for No. 20, it's going to come," Vázquez said of their advice. "Look for line drives, get a couple hits and get your confidence back. It's going to come."Vázquez put Boston ahead 5-1 in the third with his grand slam, a drive just over the wall in left on a 2-1, 71-mph curveball from Jason Vargas (6-8).César Hernández's RBI single in the fifth pulled Philadelphia within 5-2, but Vázquez responded...
