Hanson, 21, is batting .280/.326/.442 with 11 home runs, 58 RBI and 25 steals through 118 games for Double-A Altoona.
Maturity issues aside, Hanson is having a pretty solid 2014 campaign for the Bucs. He's shown more pop than expected, above-average speed and the ability to hit for a decent average. With nobody blocking him at the big-league level, he could get a shot at the starting shortstop job as early as next season.

Pirates infield prospect Alen Hanson went 2-for-4 with a home run for Double-A Altoona on Saturday, raising his season line to .269/.305/.434.
Since the beginning of June, Hanson has hit .297/.328/.450 with seven doubles, two triples, and two home runs. It may be unfair to expect more out of a 21-year old already playing in Double-A, but his monster 2012 season raised the bar against which all of his future performance will be measured.

Fri May 2 201413:56Hanson hits first 2014 dinger
Pirates prospect SS/2B Alen Hanson was 1-for-3 with his first home run of the season Thursday for Double-A Altoona.
Hanson, 21, has struggled this season in his first 22 games for Altoona, batting .237/.276/.366 with six extra-base hits, six steals and a 21/5 strikeout-to-walk ratio. This comes after he posted a .679 OPS and 26/8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 35 games at Altoona to finish the 2013 season. Hanson's prospect stock has steadily declined since his outstanding 2012 breakout campaign at Low-A West Virginia, but he still projects as a big-league second baseman with good speed and extra-base pop.

Sat Apr 19 201411:57Pirates INF prospect Hanson picks up two hits
Pirates infield prospect Alen Hanson went 2-for-4 with a triple on Friday for Double-A Altoona.
Hanson is struggling in 2014, hitting just .220/.264/.320 with a double and two triples through his first 12 games. Hanson's prospect status has lost some of its luster after his .309/.381/.528 line for Low-A West Virginia in 2012, but he still appears to be the long-term second baseman for the Pirates.

Mon Mar 10 201408:29Pirates option INF Hanson to Double-A
Pirates optioned INF Alen Hanson to Double-A Altoona.
Hanson is coming off a season where he hit .274/.329/.427 with eight home runs and 58 RBI in 127 games between High-A Bradenton and Double-A Altoona. The 21-year-old scuffled a bit after his promotion, so the Pirates hope to see some progress. He's still a solid prospect, but will likely be forced over to second base in the long-term.
