Sun Aug 8 202123:58J.D. Martinez Has Four Hits In Return
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez returned to the lineup Sunday after missing one game with COVID-like symptoms, and the rest seemed to do him good as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs scored. Despite having struggled over the last several weeks, Martinez now finds himself with hits in eight of his last 21 at-bats. He's only homered once since July 21, but this performance is surely encouraging to fantasy managers who can in part trace their success back to his strong season.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Saturday. He wasn't feeling well and will be away from the team. It's unclear if Martinez tested positive or came into close contact with someone infected, as the results from the test weren't in yet. The 33-year-old will need to clear MLB protocols and is considered day-to-day. Martinez has been terrific in 2021, slashing .284/.350/.525 with 21 home runs, 68 RBI, and 69 runs scored across 449 plate appearances. Pitcher Tanner Houck was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. He will start the second half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Blue Jays. Houck was called up as the 27th man; he may be sent back down after the game. Fantasy managers should avoid Houck as a streamer against a loaded Toronto Blue Jays lineup.

It was his 21st long ball of the season. Martinez has now had too good days in a row after after a five-game stretch in which he went 1-for-22. Fantasy managers will be quite pleased to see the improvement after he looked so lost at the plate, striking out seven times in that five-game stretch. With an .889 OPS on the year, he should still be in fantasy lineups, as he can't be kept down for long.

He can be counted on to bounce back going forward.

Fri Jul 30 202100:14AL East-leading Red Sox get Schwarber in trade with Nats
BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox got All-Star slugger Kyle Schwarber from the Washington Nationals for a minor league pitcher late Thursday night. The trade was announced after the AL East-leading Red Sox lost to Toronto 13-1 at Fenway Park. Boston is 1 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay. Schwarber had just finished a historic homer barrage when he strained his right hamstring on July 2. The left-handed hitter has been on the injured list since then, but could be playing again within a couple weeks. The 28-year-old outfielder was off to a smashing start in his first season with Washington, hitting 25 home runs with 53 RBIs in 72 games. He was chosen as an All-Star for the first time, but unable to play in the showcase event. Schwarber tied a major league record by hitting 12 home runs in a 10-game span from June 19-29. He also set a record for a leadoff hitter for homers in a month, connecting 15 times to start games in June. With Boston, Schwarber could see time in the outfield and also at designated... [More]
Thu Jul 29 202123:03J.D. Martinez Goes Hitless Again On Thursday
Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in a 13-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Thursday. It was the second game in a row that Martinez was held hitless, as he has gone cold at the plate over his last seven games where he is slashing .120/.154/.200 with one RBI, one run scored and a 6:1 K:BB ratio. Despite the recent slump, Martinez has still had a great bounce-back season following a dismal 2020 campaign, as he's now slashing .293/.361/.546 with 20 homers, 65 RBI and 67 runs scored over 97 games. He'll look to snap this skid on Friday in the series opener with Tampa Bay.

Sun Jul 25 202115:23Yankees Germán has no-hitter through 7 vs Red Sox at Fenway
BOSTON (AP) — Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees is pitching a no-hitter through seven innings against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Mixing his well-spotted fastball in the mid-90 mph range with a changeup and curveball, the 28-year-old Germán has struck out 10 and allowed just one walk. He's thrown 90 pitches Sunday afternoon. Germán struck out four batters in the seventh. The inning was prolonged by a passed ball on a strike three. The last no-hitter at Fenway by an opponent was by Detroit's Jim Bunning on July 20, 1958, when he retired future fellow Hall of Famer Ted Williams on a flyball for the final out. The last Yankees pitcher to no-hit Boston was Dave Righetti at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1983. Germán has been helped by two excellent defensive plays. Shortstop Gleyber Torres went into the deep hole to throw out J.D. Martinez on a grounder in the fifth and first baseman DJ LeMahieu made a nice stab on Christian Vázquez’s grounder leading off the sixth. Germán, who missed all of last season serving the remainder of an 81-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy,is making his 17th start. He hadn'tt gone beyond 5 2/3 innings in his last eight, and his season-high is seven innings, which he’s done twice. The Yankees entered the day eight games back in the AL East after rallying for a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday. New York leads 3-0. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
