Wed Apr 9 201422:32Garza gets the no-decision in start vs. Phils
Matt Garza allowed four runs (three earned) over six innings and got the no decision in Wednesday's start against the Phillies.
Garza allowed eight hits, walked two, and struck out four in the effort. He wasn't nearly as sharp as he was in his season debut, but was able to pitch his way out of a few tight spots to keep his team in the game. He'll face the Cardinals next.

Wed Apr 2 201416:02Matt Garza goes eight strong but loses
Matt Garza was fantastic in his Brewers' debut Wednesday but still took a loss, allowing a run on two hits and a walk over eight innings.
Garza struck out seven and had a no-hitter going with two outs in the seventh inning before Chris Johnson took him deep for the only run of the game. The veteran right-hander had a rough spring training but looked in midseason form Wednesday, touching the mid-90s while showing sharp breaking stuff. He'll take on the Phillies next week.

Fri Mar 28 201423:39Garza allows four runs in final start Friday
Matt Garza allowed four runs -- two earned -- over 3 2/3 innings in his final spring tune-up on Friday.
Garza allowed six hits and two walks while fanning just one batter on the night. It's an ugly cap to an ugly spring for the 30-year-old, who finishes with a 8.80 ERA in 15 1/3 innings. Garza has been a notoriously poor spring pitcher in recent years, so it will be interesting to see if he can flip the switch when the lights come on next week.

Sun Mar 23 201421:37Matt Garza whiffs six in victory over Reds
Matt Garza delivered his best start of the Cactus League season in Sunday's win over the Reds, allowing one run on four hits over six frames.
Garza walked a pair and struck out six in the impressive showing. Even with the strong effort, he owns a 10.03 ERA on the spring season. He offers intriguing upside with his late round draft position, but still has very real injury concerns.

Thu Mar 20 201416:58Garza to pitch in minors game Sunday
Matt Garza will pitch in a minor league game on Sunday instead of against the Reds.
It will be his second straight minor league start. Garza has allowed 17 runs (12 earned) on 19 hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings during Cactus League play, but there's nothing to indicate that he's dealing with any sort of injury. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said it's mostly about avoiding pitching against a division rival. Garza is slated to return to Cactus League action on March 28 against the Royals and is under consideration to start the third game of the regular season against the Braves.

Wed Mar 12 201417:22Garza torched by the Angels
Matt Garza was incinerated by the Angels during Wednesday's start, allowing 10 runs (six earned) in 1 2/3 innings.
Garza's ugly spring continues, as he allowed nine hits and a walk while only striking out one. The Angels put up an eight-spot in the second inning, chasing Garza out of the game with his Cactus League ERA up to 19.06. He has only logged 5 2/3 innings total, but he should be further along at this point.

Sat Mar 8 201400:08Matt Garza struggles again in second start
Matt Garza's struggles continued in his second Cactus League start for the Brewers, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits in Friday's loss to the Padres.
On the plus side, Garza did manage to rack up three strikeouts without walking a batter. While he threw more strikes than he did in his first outing, Garza admitted afterwards that his command still isn't where he wants it to be. Continue to monitor his situation this spring and draft with caution.

Sun Mar 2 201419:42Garza struggles mighitily in Brewers debut
Matt Garza struggled mightily in his Brewers debut on Sunday, allowing four runs on four hits in his lone inning of work against the Rockies in Cactus League play.
Garza also walked a pair and didn't record a strikeout. Afterwards he admitted that he had difficulty sleeping on Saturday night, and stuck to throwing only fastballs and changeups during the appearance. He still has plenty of time to right the ship before the start of the regular season, but fantasy owners should tread with caution until he improves his command.

Fri Jan 31 201418:39Angels had offered Garza comparable contract
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Angels had offered Matt Garza a four-year deal in the neighborhood of $50 million around the time of the winter meetings.
The Angels did not opt to leave the offer on the table, as they generally require quick decisions when making offers to free agents. The 30-year-old hurler waited a bit longer into the offseason, and wound up with a comparable deal from the Brewers instead. Fantasy owners likely prefer his final destination in Milwaukee as opposed to the hard-hitting American League West.

Tue Jan 28 201414:39Brewers have health protection in Garza deal
Matt Garza's contract with the Brewers contains protection over medical concerns.
Garza's five-year pact is worth between $50-$67 million. The 30-year-old will earn $12.5 million annually between 2014-'17, with $2 million deferred each year without interest. Garza will net $500,000 each year he reaches 30 starts and 190 innings. Garza's $13 million option in the fifth season vests if all of the following are achieved: 1.) Starts 110 games during the first four years, 2.) Is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2017 season, and, 3.) Pitches at least 115 innings in 2017. The Brewers can exercise the option for $5 million if Garza misses those plateaus, and the option drops to $1 million if he is on the disabled list for 130 days in any 183-day period. This complicated language is why it took several days for the deal to be publicly announced.

Sun Jan 26 201414:16Brewers, Matt Garza finalize four-year deal
Brewers signed RHP Matt Garza to a four-year, $52 million contract.
There was an unspecified hiccup that delayed the official announcement of the deal a few days, but it's obviously been ironed out. Garza, 30, posted a 3.82 ERA and 136/42 K/BB ratio over 155 1/3 innings last season between the Cubs and Rangers. As long as he can remain healthy, he's a nice addition to what now looks like a pretty good Brewers rotation.

Sun Jan 26 201411:51Brews still likely to finish deal with Garza
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers "still appear on track to complete (a) deal" with Matt Garza.
Rosenthal reported Thursday afternoon that the two sides had agreed in principal to a four-year, $52 million contract, but the deal has yet to become official. According to Rosenthal, the parties "continue to work on language in (the) contract," though it's "not clear if (it's) related to (Garza's) physical." The righty has a history of elbow issues, but Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and MLB.com's Adam McCalvy have reported previously that the holdup isn't due to a medical issue. Regardless, it appears the two sides will cross the finish line soon.

Fri Jan 24 201419:09No comment from Brewers or Garza on deal
Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports that despite reports that the Brewers and Matt Garza agreed to terms on a four-year contract on Thursday, neither side commented on the situation on Friday.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported early Thursday that the two sides had agreed in principle on a four-year, $52 million pact. The Brewers themselves fueled the speculation by commenting that the Garza talks were ongoing, but that there was no deal yet. While it looks likely that the marriage will still happen, both sides appear content to remain silent until an accord is actually reached.

Thu Jan 23 201419:14Matt Garza, Brewers talks remain 'ongoing'
The Milwaukee Brewers have reported that contract negotiations with Matt Garza are "ongoing" and there is "no deal yet."
It's highly unusual for a team to comment on a deal before it's finalized, but that's exactly what the Brewers did via their Twitter account. Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel speculates that it's possible there was an issue with Garza's physical given his checkered medical history. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier Thursday that the Brewers agreed to sign Garza to a four-year, $52 million contract, but it appears the deal might now be up in the air.

Thu Jan 23 201413:28Report: Brewers sign Garza for 4-years, $52MM
The Brewers have reached agreement with free agent starter Matt Garza on a four-year, $52 million contract, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.
The contract is pending a physical, which is important in this case because Garza's health concerns are the reason he was available for this steal of a price in the first place. The right-hander has a screw near his pitching elbow and has made three career trips to the DL due to the elbow (most recently in 2012). Garza, 30, posted a 3.82 ERA and 136/42 K/BB ratio over 155 1/3 innings last season between the Cubs and Rangers. He'll slot atop Milwaukee's rotation. Because Texas couldn't offer Garza arbitration, the Brewers won't have to surrender a draft pick in the transaction.

Sun Jan 19 201410:15Teams could be concerned with Garza's health
An American League executive told Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that there "may be concerns about (Matt Garza) physically."
"There may be concerns about him physically," the unnamed executive said. "I think most teams are thinking four or five years is just too risky, even if he's a no-compensation guy." Garza has a screw near his pitching elbow from an old injury and has made three trips to the DL in his career due to the elbow (most recently in 2012, when he missed over two months of action). He'll latch on somewhere eventually but might not get the deal he entered the offseason thinking he'd receive. The Angels and Twins are two teams that are known to have interest.

Wed Jan 15 201415:00Angels have been in touch with Matt Garza
Angels owner confirmed Wednesday that the team has had discussions with free agent right-hander Matt Garza.
The Angels didn't meet with Masahiro Tanaka when he was in the United States last week, but Moreno said they are still trying to improve their pitching. Garza, 30, posted a 3.82 ERA and 136/42 K/BB ratio over 155 1/3 innings this past season between the Cubs and Rangers. He'll certainly come cheaper than Tanaka.

Thu Jan 2 201412:16Twins 'again kicking tires' on SP Matt Garza
Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN reports that the Twins are "again kicking (the) tires" on Matt Garza.
Wolfson says Minnesota ownership is willing to pay big money but wouldn't want to do "big years" on a deal with the 30-year-old free agent right-hander. Garza, who has battled some elbow issues in his career, posted a strong 3.82 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 136/42 K/BB ratio in 155 1/3 innings last season between the Cubs and Rangers. He is not tied to draft pick compensation.

Wed Dec 18 201309:07Is Garza's elbow stopping long-term offers?
La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes that "there's concern around the league about giving [free agent starter Matt] Garza a four- or five-year deal because of injury concerns (he has a screw near his elbow)."
"I also don't think Bronson Arroyo is going to get a three-year deal like he wants," Neal added in the report, stating that he didn't believe the Twins were in play for either anymore. Garza, 30, posted a 3.82 ERA and 136/42 K/BB ratio over 155 1/3 innings this past season between the Cubs and Rangers. Because Texas wasn't allowed to offer him arbitration, Garza is not tied to draft pick compensation.

Sun Dec 15 201317:59Strong market remains for Matt Garza
According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, even with the Twins out as a potential suitor, a strong market remains for free agent right-hander Matt Garza.
Heyman notes Garza's strong 2013 campaign, history of success in the hard-hitting American League East and the fact that he won't require draft pick compensation as the reasons the the high level of interest around the league. The Diamondbacks and Angels are believed to be favorites for the time being.
