BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox left fielder Blake Swihart and catcher Ryan Hanigan both left Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh inning with injuries.After Hanigan left the game at the start of the seventh inning with a neck strain, Swihart suffered a left ankle injury later in the inning.Swihart, who has been converted from a catcher into an outfielder, appeared to make a running catch of Michael Saunders' foul fly into the field corner. With the ball in his glove, he hit the side wall and went down.After being helped part of the way back to the dugout, Swihart was able to make it the rest of the way on his own, walking slowly with a limp. He struggled getting down the dugout steps.To add insult to injury, the Blue Jays challenged the catch and the call was overturned because the ball was judged to have hit the wall before entering Swihart's glove.Hanigan was guilty of three passed balls on knuckleballer Steven Wright pitches, leading to all three runs against Wright.

C/LF Blake Swihart slapped a pair of triples Wednesday, becoming the third Red Sox player to record two three-baggers in a game this season (also Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr.) Swihart also drove in two runs and is now hitting .258/.368/.387 with four RBIs.

C/LF Blake Swihart made his first career start in left field Friday, going 0-for-3 while taking the place of INF/OF Brock Holt (mild concussion). "He made the plays he needed to make," teammate and Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. said. "He's put the work in and he's going to only get better. The 24-year-old was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game. Swihart appeared in six games as a catcher for Boston before being optioned to Pawtucket on April 15 and converted to an outfielder. Over 29 games with Pawtucket (15 at catcher, 22 in the outfield), Swihart had a .243/.344/.311 slash line with one home run and eight RBIs. He committed two errors on 46 total chances in the outfield during that stretch.

C/LF Blake Swihart was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and started in left field Friday.

C Blake Swihart was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket to make room for C Christian Vazquez. At Pawtucket, Swihart will get some work as a left fielder, a nod that Vazquez is the catcher of the future.

Swihart, who exited early from Sunday's game, had X-rays on his finger that came back negative, Tim Britton of the Providence Journal reports.

Swihart had to be lifted for Sandy Leon after recording just one at-bat Sunday, but he looks to have avoided any long-term damage. It sounds as if this late-season ailment will not have any effect on the rookie competing for a starting catcher job in his sophomore campaign.

Swihart hit a pair of home runs and drove in five Tuesday against the Yankees.

Swihart came into play Tuesday with just three home runs in 296 plate appearances, so this was very uncharacteristic. That said, down the road he could develop above average power, which, coupled with his above average hit tool could make him a top-10 fantasy catcher in the not-so-distant future.

Swihart is not in the lineup Monday against the Rays, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports.

Swihart will get a second day off in a row, though at this point there is no indication that anything is bothering the catcher. Ryan Haningan will take over behind the plate and bat eighth.

Swihart is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Swihart will just be receiving a normal rest after he was behind the plate each of the last three games. Third-string catcher Sandy Leon will pick up a rare start and serve as the battery mate for Rich Hill, who he frequently caught for at Triple-A Pawtucket this season.

Swihart went 2-for-94 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Phillies. He's reached base safely in 13 consecutive games and his batting average is up to a season-high .288.

When he was called up early in the season, after Boston lost both of its starting catchers, the mandate for Swihart was to manage the pitching staff and not worry offense. But he's proving to be a very capable hitter at the major league level. His second-half average is .354 with an on-base percentage of .415, tops among catchers in the majors.

The rookie catcher has been red-hot at the plate recently, notching eight hits in his last 18 at-bats. He will get the day off Friday, however, with Ryan Hanigan getting the start behind the dish and hitting eighth.

Swihart's transformation from easy out in the first half to on-base machine in the second half has been nothing short of remarkable, though perhaps we shouldn't have doubted a player who was one of baseball's top prospects entering the season. Since the All-Star break, Swihart is slashing .348/.412/.478 over 102 plate appearances, though his low spot in the Boston lineup has yielded only 13 RBI during that time. Expect the young catcher to provide more power production over time, and see his counting totals rise as he moves closer to the heart of the lineup, perhaps as soon as 2016.

After getting back-to-back starts over the weekend while Ryan Hanigan nursed a hamstring injury, Swihart returns to the bench on Monday. After an inside-the-park home run on Friday night, Swihart's mobility and defense should afford him plenty of starts over the course of the rest of the season.

We don't see a catcher going inside-the-park very often, but Swihart doesn't have the traditional build of a catcher. This was his fourth multi-hit game in the last seven starts. After a period of adjustment to the majors, Swihart has picked up his hitting. He has an .863 OPS in 85 plate appearances since the All-Star break.

Swihart is out of the lineup Sunday against the Royals, Rob Bradford of WEEI Sports Radio Network reports.

Swihart will be held out for a regular day of rest, as interim manager Torey Lovullo will send out Ryan Hanigan to man the backstop.

Swihart had a big night, going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in Boston's win over the Royals on Friday night.

It has been a lost season for the Red Sox, but Swihart - particularly in the second half - has been one bright spot. He's now hitting a respectable .274 with 22 RBI as he works to establish himself as Boston's backstop of the future. He'll have the opportunity to garner valuable experience as the 2015 season winds down.

Swihart was one of six Boston players to record at least three hits in Saturday's 22-10 demolition of the Mariners, finishing the afternoon 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBI.

Swihart doubled twice in the contest to continue what has been a quietly excellent second half. Since the All-Star break, the 23-year-old has more than lived up to his billing as one of the game's top catching prospects, as he's slashed .298/.322/.404 across 57 at-bats.
