Swihart will make the start at catcher for the fourth time in six games Sunday against the Tigers, Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports.
With the Red Sox at the bottom of the AL East standings and looking toward the future, it makes sense for the team to give the 23-year-old Swihart the bulk of the starts the rest of the way ahead of 34-year-old Ryan Hanigan. Swihart probably could have benefited from some more time in the minors to begin the season, but he's at least started to find his hitting stroke of late. He's slashing .300/.317/.400 since the All-Star break and produced his first career three-hit performance in Saturday's 7-6 loss.

Swihart went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI in Friday night's win over Tampa Bay. That's two consecutive multi-hit games for Swihart, who is 7-for-26 with three extra-base hits and five runs scored since being activated off the disabled list after the All-Star break.
The Red Sox plan to call up pitching prospects Henry Owens and Brian Johnson to join Eduardo Rodriguez, which will comprise three-fifths of the starting rotation going forward. Swihart has experience catching all three of them. Look for him to be on the field more often than Ryan Hanigan.

Swihart went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in the second game of Monday's double-header.
Swihart, who had been on the disabled list with a foot injury, was activated Monday. Boston decided to bring him back to the major league level, while designating Sandy Leon for assignment, so it looks like the rookie catcher will hang around for the rest of the season.
Mon Jul 20 201515:00Swihart (foot) activated from disabled list Monday
Swihart (foot) was activated from the disabled list Monday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
Ryan Hanigan figures to get most of the playing time behind home plate, with Swihart replacing Sandy Leon as the top backup. If the Red Sox eventually concede defeat in the playoff race, Swihart could get more playing time in the majors, or he might be sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket to get regular at-bats. He went 3-for-13 during a four-game rehab assignment with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket.

Sat Jul 18 201510:18Swihart (foot) will continue rehabilitation assignment
Swihart (foot) will continue his rehabilitation assignment, catching another game for Double-A Portland on Saturday, and could be activated this coming week, the Providence Journal reports. "We feel like once he gets through (Saturday), if he's capable of coming back, that's an option to us. No decision as of yet," said manager John Farrell.
The Red Sox had planned another week of rehab games for Swihart, but it sounds like he could return sooner than that. It's not clear if Swihart will return to Boston or stay in the minors after he's activated from the disabled list.

Swihart (foot) has begun a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. He served as the PawSox' designated hitter Friday night, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.
The Red Sox are comfortable with Ryan Hanigan as their lead catcher, so it should not be a surprise if Swihart is returned to Pawtucket when he's ready to be activated.
Fri Jul 3 201517:00Blake Swihart: To DL With Foot Sprain
Swihart, who has been battling a left foot sprain, was placed on the 15-day DL Friday, the Providence Journal's Tim Britton reports.
Boston will use Ryan Hanigan and Sandy Leon at catcher with Swihart out of action, and even once he's healthy it might make sense to send him to Triple-A so that he can get something going at the plate. He had just a .279 OBP so far this season, so this should not be a major blow to fantasy teams. Even if Swihart rejoins the Red Sox when eligible it's possible that Hanigan may be used as the primary catcher. The move will be backdated to July 1.

Sat Jun 27 201508:05Swihart allowed wild pitch to get past him and led to tying run ...
Swihart allowed a wild pitch to get past him and led to the tying run scoring in Boston's eventual win Friday night, the Providence Journal reports. "That's been an ongoing development need for him," manager John Farrell said. "It continues to be. There's always a routine he goes through prior to a game, and that is a blocking drill. While we've got a full plate in front of him, that's still an area that's on the come for him."
Swihart has become more comfortable at the plate since his callup, hitting .298/.353/.447 in his last 51 plate appearances, but there's still some pockets of defensive development needed. And it makes us wonder if he'll be sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket to continue his development, when Ryan Hanigan (hand) is ready to return. Hanigan is currently on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment and eligible to be activated next Wednesday.

Continue to consider Swihart day-to-day for now.
