Swihart is out of the lineup Sunday against the Blue Jays, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports.

Swihart's MLB career has gotten off to a rough start with a 2-for-22 showing at the plate, but manager John Farrell's commitment to the 23-year-old as his primary catcher hasn't wavered yet. Swihart will use Sunday as both a mental and physical break from the rigors of the majors, as backup Sandy Leon slots in to serve as the battery mate for Clay Buchholz.

Swihart doubled and drove in a run in Wednesday night's loss to Tampa Bay.

Both the extra-base hit and the RBI were firsts for the young catcher, who has started four of five games since being called up. He also threw out a runner attempted to steal.

Swihart was back in the lineup for Tuesday night's win over Tampa Bay. He went 0-for-3.

Since being called up, Swihart has started three of four games, but has just one hit in 10 at-bats. While Swihart was a good hitter in the minors, that may not be the case in Boston, particularly early in his tenure. His focus right now is learning major league hitters and working with Boston's starting staff.

Swihart is not in the lineup Monday against the Rays, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports.

Swihart started both games behind the plate after being called up Saturday, starting his major league career 1-for-7 with four strikeouts. He figures to get the majority of playing time with both Christian Vazquez and Ryan Hanigan hurt, but Sandy Leon will fill in Monday to give him a day off.

Manager John Farrell said Swihart is "going to get a lot of exposure" as Boston's starting catcher, the Boston Globe reports. The young catcher was called up Friday after Ryan Hanigan suffered a hand injury that will keep him out until July at the earliest.

By the time Hanigan's ready to return, Swihart will have had a ton of experience and presumably enough exposure to calling games for the starting staff and learning major league hitters. This could be Swihart's job for the rest of the season. Farrell added that Swihart will be eased in and out of lineup with Sandy Leon spelling him when it's appropriate.

Swihart went 1-for-3 in his big league debut Saturday, scoring a run and walking once with two strikeouts.

It was a modest beginning for the rookie catcher, but Swihart still has plenty of fantasy upside in his contact-heavy profile. With Ryan Hanigan (hand) out until at least the All-Star break, Swihart should be a priority add if you need help behind the plate.

Swihart will bat ninth in his big league debut Saturday against the Yankees, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

With the immediate placement in the starting lineup on callup, it's clear that Swihart is going to have a prominent role with Ryan Hanigan (fractured hand, 15-day DL) joining Christian Vazquez (elbow, out of the season) on the shelf. Swihart is worth consideration in two-catcher formats and deep mixed leagues.

Swihart will be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday, Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports.

The report, which has not been confirmed the Red Sox, also suggests the club will continue to explore external options to replace Ryan Hanigan (hand) even after Swihart's promotion. That said, it seems likely the 23-year-old Swihart will serve as the primary option behind the plate for now, ahead of Sandy Leon. Swihart got off to a strong start with Pawtucket this season (.338/.392/.382 in 18 games), although he's still looking for his first home run after hitting 13 of them between Double-A and Triple-A last year.

Swihart finished the month of April with a line of .338/.392/.382 in 74 plate appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket. The switch-hitting catcher has been best from the left side of the plate, hitting .390/.457/.430 against right-handers.

For now, the Red Sox are patient and will allow Swihart to finish cooking at the Triple-A level, but an introduction to Boston is expected at some point this season. It probably won't happen before the All-Star break, but the organization will benefit from having him experience MLB this season before he takes a more prominent role in 2016.

Swihart had four hits, two doubles and two RBI in five at-bats for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. He's hit safely in all seven games played.

Swihart's stick is sizzling right now, with three consecutive multi-hit games in which he's knocked in seven runs.

Swihart drove in the winning run in the 13th innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Saturday. In two games played, Swihart is 2-for-11 with two RBI.

In 22 innings with Swihart behind the dish, Pawtucket pitchers have allowed 17 hits, seven walks and one earned run while striking out 21 batters. He's thrown out one of two attempted base stealers. Swihart has caught two of the organization's best starting prospects, Brian Johnson on Thursday and Henry Owens on Saturday, and the two have combined for 11.1 innings, five hits, one run, five walks and 10 strikeouts.

Manager John Farrell said the team is waiting to hear the extent of Christian Vazquez' elbow injury before deciding if Swihart should remain with the major league club, the Boston Globe reports.

Vazquez is expected to start the season on the 15-day disabled list, so it's natural to wonder if Swihart will open the season on Boston's roster. Ryan Hanigan is expected to move up as the starter, leaving the backup job a choice between Swihart (who is on the 40-man roster) and Humberto Quintero (who is not). The organization would like Swihart to be an everyday starter, something that will only happen at Triple-A Pawtucket. Boston is considered a top contender in the A.L. East, so it's hard to see them entrusting an important role like starting catcher to an inexperienced, albeit talented, player.

Swihart is in the mix to remain in Boston should Christian Vazquez (elbow) not be ready to start the season, the Boston Herald reports.

In answering a question about Swihart staying up with Boston if Vazquez wasn't ready, manager John Farrell said, "anybody in our uniform is under consideration." He added that there's still some time before the regular season and that he's waiting to see "how things play out the next eight or nine days." The main goal is to have Swihart catching every day, whether that be for Boston or Triple-A Pawtucket.

Swihart served as the catcher for Clay Buchholz in Friday's game against the Braves.

With news that Christian Vazquez (elbow) will undergo an MRI, we naturally think about the possibility of Swihart sticking with Boston to the start the season. The Red Sox don't feel he's ready at this time and would likely have veteran Humberto Quintero stay up with the big club to start the season.

Swihart went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's game against the Phillies. He raised his spring average to .538.

Swihart drew a lot of attention prior to the game given how often his name has been linked to Philadelphia in a potential deal for Cole Hamels.

Swihart would not be called up to the majors should an injury strike one of Boston's catchers, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell, the Boston Globe reports. "He's still developing, with his receiving particularly," the manager said. "His game-calling, he's getting familiar with [pitchers] that he's catching now for the first time. The athleticism is as good as you're going to find behind the plate. It's more experience at the upper levels is where he's at in his own development path."

Farrell prefers Swihart getting development time at Triple-A Pawtucket, so the Red Sox would likely call up Humberto Quintero, who has played parts of 12 seasons in the majors, should Christian Vazquez or Ryan Hanigan suffer a short-term injury. Swihart is expected to see the majors at some point -- maybe a September call up -- but much will depend on the Red Sox' positioning in terms of postseason chances.

Swihart, Boston's top prospect, will probably get to the big leagues at some point this season, though it's not expected to happen before July.

The Red Sox are unwilling to include Swihart in a potential deal for Philadelphia's Cole Hamels, the Boston Herald reports.

An industry confirmed Boston made an offer for Hamels, but characterized it as "poor." The Phillies are seeking elite-level prospects for Hamels, but so far the Red Sox are not including Swihart or Mookie Betts.

Swihart is participating in Boston's Rookie Development Program this week, WEEI.com reports.

The program is for Boston's prospects who are on the cusp, or have gotten a taste, of the major leagues. Baseball activities are a portion of the program, but its main focus on what everyday life will be like for a Major League Baseball player. Topics deal with things like travel, money and dealing with the media.

Swihart has been named Boston's top prospect, according to Baseball America.

Not a real shocker. Swihart has made the transition to catcher since joining the organization in 2011. He's developed into a good defensive backstop, earning the organization's defensive player of the year in 2013, while maintaining his ability to hit from both sides of the plate. Boston added him to the 40-man roster during the offseason and if all goes according to plan, they'll be adding him to the major league roster as the starting catcher in 2016.
