C Devin Mesoraco was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Mesoraco was batting .140 in 16 games after making only 23 appearances last season with a hip impingement. "It's a blow to Devin," said manager Bryan Price. "He had the hip surgery and a really prolific off-season of work. He wants to be part of the team. We just have to play the cards that are here. We're capable of pitching and hitting better than we have been."

C Devin Mesoraco appeared healthy and ready to return to his customary position behind the plate upon arrival at spring training camp. Mesoraco played in just 23 games last year due to a hip impingement and torn labrum that required surgery in June. The impingement made it difficult for him to squat, and Mesoraco had a brief and failed attempt to comeback as a left fielder. There were no such concerns on the first day of camp for the Reds' backstop, who slugged 25 homers in 2014.

Mesoraco (hip) will begin light agility drills and could start hitting and throwing around the beginning of November, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Fay goes on to say if everything goes according to plan Mesoraco should be fully healed in time for spring training, great news considering the severity of his hip injury.

Mesoraco (hip) will need at least four months of rehab and recovery after Monday's surgery in New York.
The Reds still expect that Mesoraco will be able to catch in time for spring training, and that he'll even be able to begin his offseason workout routine on time. "It certainly hasn't pushed back anything as far as working out, lifting," Mesoraco said. "I would expect that I will be moving around pretty good even at the end of the season, even to the point where I'll be able to do some running or stuff like that."
Sun Jun 28 201513:02Devin Mesoraco: (Hip) Needs At Least 4 Months To Recover
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will need at least four months of rehab and recovery after undergoing surgery on his hip Monday in New York, according to the team's official website.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will need at least four months of rehab and recovery after undergoing surgery on his hip Monday in New York, according to the team's official website. The Reds still expect that Mesoraco will be ready to catch by the start of spring training next year, and he may even be able to begin his offseason workout routine on his usual schedule. The hip injury was first reported during the second week of the season, but the Reds held out hope that Mesoraco could avoid surgery, knowing that the procedure would likely leave him enough time to be ready for 2016, even if he waited until June or July. "It certainly hasn't pushed back anything as far as working out, lifting," Mesoraco said. "I would expect that I will be moving around pretty good even at the end of the season, even to the point where I'll be able to do some running or stuff like that."
Sat Jun 20 201516:25Devin Mesoraco: (Hip) Slated For Season-Ending Surgery
Mesoraco is slated to undergo season-ending hip surgery June 29, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco and the Reds exhausted every possible option to get him back on the field this year, including a brief tryout in left field, but it became obvious that he would not be able to play through the hip injury. Doctors have told Mesoraco that he will be able to go through his normal offseason routine, though it's possible the Reds could play it safe and limit his workload at the start of spring training.
Sat Jun 20 201515:38Devin Mesoraco: (Hip) Considering Season-Ending Surgery
Mesoraco is leaning toward season-ending surgery on his hip, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
The Reds' catcher hasn't been behind the plate since the first week of the season and after an ill-fated attempt to man left field, seems resigned to have surgery on his balky hip, "I wanted to continue to get to the point where this is my only option, this is the only thing I can do," Mesoraco said. "I'm definitely pretty close to that now." After two games in left field for Triple-A Louisville, Mesoraco felt pain in his hip and was promptly removed from the game, putting any plans to join the Reds on hold. Brayan Pena (.302 AVG, 11 RBI) is expected to continue seeing the majority of at-bats at catcher

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will have season-ending hip surgery June 29, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will have season-ending hip surgery June 29, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Mesoraco has not caught in a game since April 12, but was attempting to make his return as an outfielder, as he initially thought he only felt pain while crouching. However, he was forced to exit a rehab game earlier this month with soreness in the hip, which may have been the catalyst to address the problem surgically. “I expect to be able to start my offseason workouts the same time I would in the beginning of November,” Mesoraco told the Dayton Daily News. “I expect to start my catching in the beginning of January, the same time I normally would. This certainly hasn’t messed up the timing for next year at all. What we were trying to do was to make it possible so I could help out this year, but it hasn’t (worked).”
Sun Jun 14 201523:20Devin Mesoraco: (Hip) Outfield Plan On HOld
The Reds' plan to play Mesoraco (hip) in the outfield has been put on hold, with Delino DeShields, the manager of Triple-A Louisville, saying he doesn't expect Mesoraco to get any better while trying to play through the injury, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "[Mesoraco]'s not going to be the player they want him to be with a bad hip," DeShields said Sunday. "I don't care where you put him. The main thing for him, right now, is to get healthy. It's obvious, to me, that he's injured, and he's not going to get better. It was even hurting him on his swings the other night in Columbus."
Mesoraco was removed from Thursday's game with Triple-A Louisville due to soreness in his hip, and he then left the team to attend a funeral Friday. He hasn't played in a game since Thursday, and there's still some chance he'll eventually opt for season-ending surgery. The procedure would likely come with a recovery timetable of four-to-six months, so while he doesn't need to make an immediate decision, Mesoraco probably doesn't want to wait until September or October unless he can truly make an impact this season. Not exactly fleet of foot to begin with, Mesoraco is trying to learn a new position while nursing a pretty serious injury.

Mesoraco (hip) exited Wednesday's rehab game with soreness, but has a scheduled day off Thursday due to a death in the family, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco continues to work his way back from a hip injury, but appears to have suffered a bit of a setback. It looks as though when he does rejoin the club, he'll take a spot in left field while Brayan Pena will continue the catching duties.

Mesoraco (hip) began a rehab assignment Monday and is 1-for-5 through two games thus far.
Mesoraco has not played a full nine innings yet, but he is working his way back into playing shape and is getting accustomed to his new spot in left field, which is where he will play when he rejoins the Reds. Manager Bryan Price estimated Mesoraco would need only three or four rehab games, so he could be back activated from the disabled list as this weekend.

Mesoraco (hip) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Monday, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco is expected to need roughly three or four rehab games, and if the Reds like what they see, their Opening Day backstop could be activated by roughly mid-June. He'll see his rehab starts in left field, and that will likely be where Mesoraco will be inserted into the lineup upon his return. His hip injury may prevent him from catching games, but there may be some hope for fantasy utility in 2015 (with the potential for outfield eligibility as an added bonus in 2016).
