Thu Jun 4 201516:16Devin Mesoraco: Considering Move to Left Field
Mesoraco (hip) will start working out in left field and hasn't officially given up on the 2015 season, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco can still have his hip surgery during the offseason and be ready for the start of 2016, as a catcher, the club contends. This seems risky, but that's also in light of how the Reds have dealt with this injury in the first place.

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, sidelined with a hip injury, will start working out in left field in an effort to return this season, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, sidelined with a hip injury, will start working out in left field in an effort to return this season, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Mesoraco cannot squat in order to catch, but he could potentially put off his hip surgery until the offseason if he is able to play in the outfield.

If Mesoraco opts to undergo surgery on his injured hip it will require four months of rehab, meaning his 2015 season would be over, CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports.
Heyman said Mesoraco may be nearing a decision on how to proceed with the hip impingement, but at best he will be playing through a serious injury and at worst his season will effectively over. Brayan Pena and Tucker Barnhart will serve as the Reds' catchers for the foreseeable future.
Wed May 27 201514:01Devin Mesoraco: Hip Surgery Would End Season
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season if he elects to undergo hip surgery, as he would be required to rehab for four months, according to CBS Sports.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season if he elects to undergo hip surgery, as he would be required to rehab for four months, according to CBS Sports. Mesoraco has not caught a game since early April due to the injury, and while he has been able to be a designated hitter when the Reds play in American League parks, he said he has been frustrated with the lack of progress in his recovery. "It's very disappointing," he told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I expected to feel better than I have. We've been doing some stuff that has been helping and has been making me feel better. Then to go out there and not be able to get into a normal catching position that I'm used is definitely disappointing. To compound that, to feel worse after I try to do all that is not a good thing." The team has not made a decision with regard to surgery.
Mon May 25 201512:20Mesoraco (hip) placed on 15-day DL retroactive to Thursday
Mesoraco (hip) has been placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to Thursday.
Mesoraco would be eligible to return June 5, but that seems highly unlikely considering that the backstop may decide to undergo hip surgery. In the short term, the team needed a roster spot for reliever Manny Parra, so the move had to be made with Mesoraco at significantly less than 100 percent. Brayan Pena and Tucker Barnhart will continue to see most of the reps behind the plate moving forward.
Sat May 23 201513:05Devin Mesoraco: (Hip) Suffers Setback, May Need Surgery
Mesoraco (hip) suffered a setback this weekend and may opt to have surgery, the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reports.
Fay is the one who speculated that Mesoraco will opt to have surgery to repair the hip that has given him so much trouble this season, in which case his season would likely be over. The team will make a decision about the best course of action when they return to Cincinnati after this weekend's series.

Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, who has been dealing with a hip injury for most of the season, suffered a setback in his recovery and could elect to undergo surgery, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco, who has been dealing with a hip injury for most of the season, suffered a setback in his recovery and could elect to undergo surgery, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. A decision will not be made until the team returns home after their weekend series against the Cleveland Indians, but Mesoraco's season would likely be over if he did have the procedure.
Fri May 22 201514:17Mesoraco out of lineup Friday against Cleveland
Mesoraco is out of the lineup Friday against Cleveland.
Mesoraco DH'd for the Reds during their series against the Royals earlier in the week, but has been replaced in the lineup Friday by Brayan Pena. It's possible that he'll be back in the lineup at DH on Saturday, but he's still a ways away from seeing time at catcher.

Mesoraco (hip) got into a squat position about 15 times and tossed approximately 15 balls at 20 percent on simulated throws to second base Tuesday, MLB.com reports. "At least I know I can get into squat position, which I hadn't done for 30-something days," Mesoraco said. "It's good. Definitely baby steps. We're not going to go crazy because those muscles haven't been used. It's going to be a slow process."
It's an encouraging first step for Mesoraco, who hasn't caught a game since Apr. 12, and the plan is for him to do "more of the same" Wednesday before the Reds head into an off day. Mesoraco has contemplated surgery on the hip if it doesn't get better through treatment and therapy. He's been limited mostly to pinch-hit duty but has a chance to start as many as five games at DH this week with the Reds playing two road interleague series.

Mesoraco (hip) will take part in some catching activities Tuesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco is finally ready to test his injured hip with some catching, and how he responds in the days ahead will likely go a long way toward deciding whether or not to send him for surgery. There's a chance that decision could come after the Reds' two road interleague series this week (at Kansas City, at Cleveland), during which Mesoraco will be available to DH.

Mesoraco (hip) is batting eighth and serving as the DH for Tuesday's game in Kansas City, C. Trent Rosencrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
With the Reds playing in an American League ballpark, Mesoraco gets a rare chance to join the lineup. It's expected that he'll try to catch a bullpen session at some point this week, but there's still a decent chance he eventually opts for surgery, which would potentially be season-ending.

Mesoraco (hip) will try catching a bullpen session next week and could elect to receive surgery, MLB/com's Mark Sheldon reports.
Mesoraco is still out of the lineup Friday and should be expected to stay out until that bullpen session, with Brayan Pena taking over behind the plate. There's no question Mesoraco hasn't been himself in 2015 and unless he miraculously becomes pain-free in the next few days, it's reasonable to expect him to elect for surgery and be out for several weeks, if not a few months.

Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the lineup Thursday against San Francisco.
Mesoraco said Tuesday that he's optimistic he can return behind the plate soon. However, with nothing from the Reds to suggest Mesoraco is on the verge of testing his hip out in a bullpen session, it seems hard to imagine we'll see him in the starting lineup before next Tuesday. Cincinnati kicks off a two-game road interleague series at Kansas City that day and then heads to Cleveland next weekend, so Mesoraco should see starts as the designated hitter.
Wed May 13 201516:54Mesoraco (hip) remains out of lineup Wednesday against Atlanta
Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the lineup Wednesday against Atlanta, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
It's been over a month now since Mesoraco last caught a game, and while he said Tuesday that he's optimistic he can catch again soon, there is no set timetable for his return behind the plate. He remains limited to pinch-hit duty for now, but will get another opportunity to DH next week with the Reds playing two more road interleague series.

Mesoraco (hip) said Tuesday that he is optimistic he can catch again soon, the Cincinnati Enquirer's C. Trent Rosecrans reports.
Mesoraco made a pinch-hit appearance Tuesday and went 1-for-1 with a RBI double. He has also started fielding balls in the outfield, but manager Bryan Price said Mesoraco would only be used out there in an emergency. While Mesoraco was vague about when he would get back behind the plate, it is encouraging that he is optimistic about his timetable.
Tue May 12 201514:54Mesoraco (hip) remains out of lineup Tuesday against Braves
Mesoraco (hip) remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the Braves, MLB.com's Jamie Ramsey reports.
Mesoraco hasn't started a game behind the plate since April 11, and will once again be delegated to pinch-hit duties Tuesday night. He remains without a clear timetable for a return to the backstop, but should still be able to provide modest production in limited at-bats for the time being.
Mon May 11 201517:45Mesoraco (hip) not in lineup for Monday's game against Braves
Mesoraco (hip) is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Braves.
Mesoraco was able to serve as the designated hitter Saturday and Sunday with the Reds playing the White Sox in Chicago, but he will head back to the bench Monday with the Reds resuming National League play. Mesoraco should be available to pinch hit moving forward, but it remains to be seen when he will be back in the starting lineup.
Sun May 10 201511:50Mesoraco (hip)
Mesoraco (hip), who went 0-for-4 Saturday night, will again serve as the designated hitter Sunday, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports.
Mesoraco may not be healthy enough to catch quite yet, but with the Reds capping off a weekend series in an AL ballpark, manager Bryan Price will use the DH spot to get him some at-bats. It's unclear whether he'll be available to catch when the Reds open a three-game series against the Braves on Monday.

Mesoraco (hip) is not in the lineup for Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Mesoraco was set to serve as the designated hitter on Friday in what was to be his first start since Apr. 11, but the game was postponed due to rain. He will presumably be in there at DH for the nightcap to face lefty Carlos Rodon. Mesoraco remains unable to catch due to a hip impingement but the Reds are hoping he'll be able to avoid surgery.

Mesoraco (hip) will serving as the designated hitter and bat fourth in Friday's game against the White Sox, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Mesoraco doesn't seem much closer to being able to catch, but a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field will allow him to start for the first time since Apr. 11. He stills hopes to avoid a surgery that would potentially be season-ending.
