OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — In the first major league game with the new, unpopular extra-inning rule, automatic runner Marcus Semien began the bottom of the 10th on second base and scored on Matt Olson’s grand slam, sending the Oakland Athletics over the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 Friday night.Olson, whose alert throw from first base nailed Angels free runner Shohei Ohtani in the top of the 10th, connected with one out. Major League Baseball instituted the controversial extra-inning runner rule for this season to keep games from dragging on amid a compressed, 60-game schedule that started late because of the virus outbreak. After Semien took second, the A’s loaded the bases against Hansel Robles (0-1) on a hit by pitch, wild pitch and a walk.New Angels manager Joe Maddon brought in reliever Hoby Milner and, with a five-man infield in place, Olson hit the first pitch far over the right-field wall.According to STATS, Olson became the third player to hit a walkoff grand slam on opening day. Wed Mar 11 202017:11Marlins' Villar trying to get comfortable in center field
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Miami manager Don Mattingly believes Jonathan Villar's move to center field is progressing nicely.Villar isn't so sure.“Hopefully I will be more comfortable when we start that first day,” Villar said.An offseason trade brought Villar, a second baseman last season, from Baltimore to Miami. A perceived glut of middle infielders prompted the Marlins to try to convert the athletic Villar into an outfielder.“We feel good about it,” Mattingly said. Villar has only played center field eight times during his seven-year career, most recently in 2017 with Milwaukee. He's primarily been a middle infielder, but also has major league experience at third base and left field.Miguel Rojas is entrenched at shortstop and the Marlins expect prospect Isan Diaz to make the full-time transition to the majors this season.Villar arrived at Marlins camp four days early to begin working on outfield drills with first base/outfielders coach Billy Hatcher. Mattingly sees improvement on Villar's... [More]
Tue Feb 18 202013:09Versatile Villar to get tryout in center field with Marlins
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Versatile newcomer Jonathan Villar is expected to be an ironman in the Miami Marlins' lineup, even if they don’t know where.Villar played in all 162 games last year for the Baltimore Orioles, mostly at second base and shortstop. But the Marlins will give him a spring training tryout in center field because they have little experience there.“I’m coming here to help the team,” Villar said. “They want me to play center field, so I’ll try. If I can play another position I’ll do it.”Villar's seven-year career has included eight games in center field, most recently in 2017 with the Milwaukee Brewers. He has been mostly a middle infielder but has also played third base and left field.“We’re going to mess around with center field and see if that’s a position he can handle,” manager Don Mattingly said. “You look at Jonathan and really feel he’s the best athlete on the field. So we’re going to give it a shot. We think he fits there with our club and our pieces, and it would be... [More]
Mon Feb 17 202015:09Marlins believe they have 'a lot more talent' in 2020
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Even the Miami Marlins can be optimistic at the start of spring training, which is why president of baseball operations Michael Hill stood facing the practice fields before the first full-squad workout Monday and didn't flinch at what's to come.“This is a camp where there is as much talent as I've ever seen,” he said. That's only modest praise given that the Marlins have endured 10 consecutive losing seasons, all with Hill in the front office. After losing 105 times in 2019, they could be much improved and still finish last in the NL East. But the Marlins do believe they're finally on the upswing in Year 3 of the Derek Jeter regime.“It's time,” manager Don Mattingly said. “There’s a lot more talent; there’s a lot more veteran talent,” Hill said. “You can look at a deeper pitching staff, a better bullpen, a deeper lineup. The expectation to win more games comes with that.”Among those with loftier expectations is majority owner Bruce Sherman, part of Jeter's group that... [More]
Sat Feb 8 202015:37Marlins' Mattingly bothered by sign-stealing, Jeter vote
MIAMI (AP) — Baseball’s news cycle of late has been dominated by the sign-stealing scandal that led to upheaval in Houston and Boston, as well as Derek Jeter missing out on being a unanimous selection for Baseball’s Hall of Fame.Don Mattingly was bothered by both stories.Miami’s manager spoke out Saturday at the team’s annual FanFest, expressing dismay over how Jeter — the Marlins’ CEO — was one vote away from appearing on 100% of the ballots submitted in this year’s Hall of Fame voting, as well as the sign-stealing controversy that is could well taint Houston’s World Series win in 2017 and Boston’s title in 2018.“You could see it kind of coming, honestly, with the technology, with the cameras, just how fast that has come to the forefront with everything you can do with replay,” Mattingly said. “You could actually see how it could ... how something could start to happen. Unfortunately, it did.”Houston manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow were suspended for a year by MLB Commissioner... [More]

Tue Jan 7 202023:01Orioles hope SS Iglesias provides defense, leadership
BALTIMORE (AP) — When it came time to find a new shortstop for the rebuilding Baltimore Orioles, general manager Mike Elias looked no further than José Iglesias.Iglesias and Baltimore finalized a $3 million, one-year contract on Tuesday. a deal that includes a $2.5 million salary this year and a $3.5 million club option for 2021 with a $500,000 buyout. After trading shortstop Jonathan Villar in December, Elias decided that the 30-year-old Iglesias would be an ideal replacement.“Just his overall talent, the combination of his offensive capability and the glove he's famous for," Elias said. “His long track record put him in a tier above anyone else that was available on the free agent market."The Orioles couldn't promise Iglesias he would be part of a winner — they've lost more than 100 games in each of the past two seasons — but they could at least offer a starting spot.“I think that we were in a good spot this year as having one of the more attractive shortstop jobs," Elias said, “because... Mon Jan 6 202019:30AP source: Rebuilding Orioles, Iglesias agree to $3M deal
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Orioles filled a hole in the middle of the infield by agreeing to a $3 million, one-year contract with shortstop José Iglesias, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because no official announcement had been made. The deal includes a club option for 2021.Iglesias provides the rebuilding Orioles a solid glove and an effective bat. Although Baltimore general manager Mike Elias has cut payroll while trying to overhaul the roster, the Orioles desperately needed a shortstop after trading veteran Jonathan Villar to Miami in December for a minor league pitcher in a cost-cutting move. The deal would be worth about $6 million for the 30-year-old Iglesias if Baltimore exercises its 2021 option. Iglesias hit .288 and reached career highs with 11 homers and 59 RBIs for Cincinnati last year. Since breaking into the majors with Boston in 2011, Iglesias has a .273 career batting average with the Red... [More]

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired right-hander Dylan Bundy from the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday in a trade for four minor league pitchers. The 27-year-old Bundy has been a durable starter with a nasty slider for the past four seasons with the Orioles, who chose him with the fourth overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft. The Angels got him for four prospects, none ranked among their top 20 by most estimates.Baltimore general manager Mike Elias said his latest trade "represents a big step toward our stated goals to accumulate and develop as much young talent as possible.""It's a bittersweet thing, parting with Dylan," Elias added. "He has done a lot for the Orioles. He has laid it on the line at all times for the Orioles and always taken the ball, and this dates well back beyond my short time here. MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Marlins will seek to add further pop to their lineup this offseason after acquiring slugging first baseman Jesús Aguilar and the versatile Jonathan Villar, who will be used primarily at third base and in the outfield.“We improved our offense, but we had a long way to go,” president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Tuesday. “So we’re still exploring opportunities to improve our offense.”The Marlins acquired Villar on Monday from the Baltimore Orioles for minor league left-hander Easton Lucas and claimed Aguilar off waivers after he was designated for assignment last week by the Tampa Bay Rays.Adding bats was the primary goal at the start of the offseason after the Marlins finished last in the National League in runs and homers. They also are shopping for bullpen help, including a closer. Starting pitching isn’t a priority because young arms are the organization’s strength.“We believe in the starting pitching depth we currently have,” Hill said. “We think this... [More]
