C Sandy Leon was selected from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday to take the place of injured backup Ryan Hanigan. "(Sandy has) the comfort level of everyone on our staff and in our uniform," Red Sox manager John Farrell said, per ESPN.com. He was designated for assignment and optioned to Pawtucket last July before returning as a September call-up.

Blake Swihart (foot) is returning from the disabled list to replace Leon as Ryan Hanigan's top backup. Leon owns a .180/.247/.191 slash line in 89 at-bats this season, with just one extra-base hit (a double).

The impending return of Ryan Hanigan raises some interesting questions about Leon's future in Boston. He's a cipher at the plate, but he's been the regular battery mate of Clay Buchholz, who has pitched like an ace since the middle of May. Blake Swihart has started to come around at the plate and offers the best bat of the three catchers, but the Red Sox don't want him to be a part-timer in what was slated to be a development year for the rookie. We're likely to see Leon and Hanigan as the catchers going forward for a spell. At some point, should the Red Sox feel the 2015 season is hopeless, then we'll see Swihart's return to regular duty in Boston.

Leon will start at catcher and bat eighth Monday against the Blue Jays, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports.

With Clay Buchholz on the mound, Leon gets the start behind the plate over Ryan Hanigan. Other than being Buchholz's preferred catcher, Leon doesn't have much going for him this season, with one extra-base hit and a .160/.241/.173 slash line in 29 games this season.

Leon had two hits in three at-bats in Tuesday night's loss to the Twins.

Leon has become the catcher of choice when Clay Buchholz is pitching, so you can expect at least one start every fifth day for the backup catcher. He's normally not much of a hitter.

Leon went 0-for-4 with a walk and sacrifice in Boston's 19-inning win over the Yankees on Friday. He was making his first regular-season start since being acquired by Boston late in spring training.

Leon also gunned down Brett Gardner attempting to steal win the eighth inning, a move that would have put the tying run in scoring position had he been successful. For now, the Red Sox are content with the catching tandem of Ryan Hanigan and Leon.

Leon will start Friday night against the Yankees, the Boston Globe reports.

The Globe's Alex Speier has done a nice breakdown of Boston's catching situation now that Christian Vazquez (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day disabled list. While Leon and Quintero are in a similar mold -- glove-first catchers who frame pitches well and have success throwing out would-be base-stealers -- one scout believes the 26-year-old Leon is a better defender and a better durability bet than the 35-year-old Quintero.

Leon has been traded to the Red Sox, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.

With Christian Vazquez slowed by a late-spring injury, Leon offers the Red Sox a veteran depth option to work in tandem with Ryan Hanigan to begin the season. The move likely pushes Blake Swihart down to Triple-A Pawtucket to begin the season.

Leon was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

With active rosters expanding to 40 players Monday, Leon will return to provide depth behind Wilson Ramos and Jose Lobaton. The 25-year-old Leon hit just .169/.234/.237 in 18 games with the major league team earlier this season, and his numbers at Syracuse were nothing to write home about (.229/.321/.371).

Leon was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

No surprise here, as Leon was only up to provide depth while Wilson Ramos attended to the birth of his child. With Ramos returning to the active roster, Leon will head back to Syracuse, where he's hit just .212/.306/.331 in 34 games this season.

Leon has been called up from Triple-A Syracuse, the Washington Post reports.

With Wilson Ramos headed to the paternity list, Leon will return to the Nationals for the first time since June. In 59 major league at-bats this season, Leon is hitting .169 with three RBI and 18 strikeouts.
