Once again, Greg Bird is hurt as spring training comes to a close. The oft-injured New York Yankees first baseman will need surgery on his ailing right ankle and could be sidelined for two months. The team learned of the setback Monday while in Atlanta for its final exhibition game, three days before the season opener at Toronto."Obviously, we were hoping it was going to be a shorter-term thing," said rookie manager Aaron Boone, who took over a club that reached Game 7 of the AL Championship Series last year. "But we feel like we got some answers. We feel like we know what the surgery's going to accomplish."Bird will have surgery to remove a small broken spur on the outside of his right ankle. Dr. Martin O'Malley is scheduled to operate Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. The slugger is expected to be out for six to eight weeks."Hopefully this is something he will now put behind him for good," Boone said. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — San Francisco Giants starter Jeff Samardzija reportedly has a strained pectoral muscle that will shut him down for at least a week and likely force him to start the season on the disabled list.Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters on Thursday that an MRI confirmed the diagnosis of an issue that has been bothering Samardzija all spring.Samardzija has a 10.64 ERA in four starts this spring as his fastball has lacked its usual velocity.Samardzija is extremely durable with five straight seasons of at least 200 innings and was slated to begin the year as the Giants third starter. His injury could open a spot for non-roster invitee Derek Holland to make the rotation.___More AP baseball: apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

Thu Feb 8 201814:41Giants add Longoria, McCutchen as they try to bounce back
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Bruce Bochy's first glimpse at his overhauled roster gives him hope the Giants will feature a lineup much like the ones of several seasons ago — back when his club was capturing World Series championships every other year.He will be managing a new outfield. Well, with Hunter Pence moving from left to right to make room for Andrew McCutchen. And a new third baseman in Evan Longoria. And that's not to mention all the reliable returners such as Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford, aces Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto, and closer Mark Melancon eager to have a bounce-back year.Bochy is confident he has the roster, depth and talent to rebound right away."We feel like we can play with anybody," he said.Longoria isn't sugar-coating anything as the Giants try to rebound from a 64-98 season and overtake the World Series runner-up Los Angeles Dodgers, who have won the past five NL West crowns."It's tough to win only 64 games, it really is. That's a tough year," Longoria said.... [More]

RHP Jeff Samardzija gave up only one run and three hits in six innings of his final regular-season start. He struck out four and finished the season with 205 strikeouts, the second-most of his career after reaching 214 with the Cubs in 2013. "It's always good to get 200," he said. "It means you are getting about one an inning. Getting strikeouts is important, especially in this league. Double plays and strikeout can save your day and save your inning. It's good to see you have good stuff throughout the season and all the work you do in the offseason and in between starts paid off." Samardzija finished with 209 1/3 innings, hitting 200 for the fifth straight season. He made 32 starts for the third straight season after making 33 in 2013 and 2014.
