Wieters now has nearly three weeks to work with to reacclimate himself to the catcher's role. It still remains to be seen whether Joseph will be the backup, but that is the likely decision. Joseph is 4-for-10 in five spring training games.

Joseph spent half the season as the primary catcher in 2014 after the Orioles lost Wieters for the season. It was a bit of a surprise since Joseph spent most of the prior three seasons at Double-A. Joseph is a defense-first catcher. He hit a measly .207/.264/.354, but had a serviceable nine home runs in 246 at-bats. Playing time will be sparse as long as Wieters is healthy.

Joseph went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer -- his fifth consecutive game with a long ball -- in Saturday's win over the Cardinals.

At the very least, Joseph is a great story, as he was contemplating retirement this winter. As a 27-year-old last season, Joseph hit 22 homers and carried an .840 OPS at Double-A Bowie, but his recent power surge is still surprising as he was very quiet at the plate prior to the past week while contributing in the O's timeshare at catcher in the absence of Matt Wieters.

Nick Hundley will setup behind the dish for the O's on Friday, as Joseph gets his third day off in the team's last six contests. He's still atop the depth chart, but it's pretty close to an even time share with Hundley at this point.

Joseph has been on a power binge, homering in four straight games, with seven long balls overall for the season. He's not a former prospect, although he was ultra productive in Triple-A last season, hitting 22 homers with 97 RBI. In any event, he's likely to earn extra playing time over fellow catcher Nick Hundley if he stays hot at the plate.

Joseph was a force at the plate Monday, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run.

The Orioles' backstop has now homered in back-to-back games and driven in four runs in those games�as many RBI as he recorded all of July. Joseph's recent hot streak has finally brought his average above .200
