Danny Espinosa (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse Thursday.
He'll play three innings in his first game. Espinosa had a cortisone shot last week and resumed baseball activities shortly after. There's a good chance he'll be optioned to Syracuse once healthy, as the Nationals are happy with Anthony Rendon and want Espinosa to gain more confidence at the plate.

Danny Espinosa (wrist) is expected to resume baseball activities soon.
Espinosa had a cortisone injection Thursday, so the Padres are waiting to see how he responds before moving forward. Wed May 29 201319:16Espinosa didn't want to wait three weeks
Danny Espinosa was told that his wrist would heal with three weeks of rest, but he wasn't willing to wait that long.
Espinosa will continue trying to play through a bone chip in his fractured right wrist, but if his production doesn't pick up the Nationals might force him to rest. "I thought if it was another week that would've been really, really productive, then I probably would've taken the one week," Espinosa said. "But it's not gonna be one week. It's gonna be an extended amount of time to get it fully recovered. I felt better. I don't have any pain, so I feel better."

Fri May 24 201316:35Danny Espinosa has small fracture in wrist
Danny Espinosa has been playing with a small fracture in his right wrist for the past month.
It's actually a loose bone chip in his hand. The injury stems from when he was hit by a pitch from Paul Maholm on April 14 and certainly explains his struggles. Espinosa hopes to avoid a trip to the disabled list and possible surgery, but the Nationals plan to rest him for a few days. Steve Lombardozzi will fill in at second base for the time being.

Wed May 22 201301:32Danny Espinosa goes hitless in 4th straight
Danny Espinosa went hitless in a fourth straight game Tuesday, leaving him with a .159 average in 139 at-bats.
Maybe more patience would be warranted if Espinosa were healthy, but it's quite possible he needs surgery for the partial rotator cuff tear he suffered last year. Besides, he's just killing the Nationals offense right now. Not only is he batting .159, but he's walked just three times all year. His OBP stands at .186.

Fri May 3 201321:59Espinosa plates lone run in loss to Pirates
Danny Espinosa drove home his seventh run of the season with an RBI single in the fourth inning Friday, but that's all the offense the Nationals could muster against A.J. Burnett and the Pirates.
Espinosa finished the evening 1-for-4. He's off to a frustratingly slow start at the dish this season, hitting just .176 with two homers and seven RBI through his first 85 at-bats. A notoriously streaky hitter, Espinosa will have to get it going soon, or he could be at risk of losing at-bats to Steve Lombardozzi.

Wed Apr 24 201316:26Danny Espinosa goes 0-for-4 in loss
Danny Espinosa went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and is 2-for-18 since returning from a wrist injury.
Espinosa is hitting just .155 in 58 at-bats for the year. He still thinks he's a power hitter, yet it's unclear if his power is going to come all of the way back while he tries playing through a rotator cuff tear. The Nationals may well be better off with Steve Lombardozzi at second base right now.
