Fri Jul 30 202122:15Gallo, Rizzo excited to join Yankees for playoff drive
MIAMI (AP) — With a pair of new sluggers in place, the New York Yankees are ready to make their playoff drive. First baseman Anthony Rizzo homered in his Yankees debut Friday night and All-Star outfielder Joey Gallo also suited up with New York for the first time in the opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. New York obtained Gallo and left-handed reliever Joely Rodríguez from the Texas Rangers for four minor league prospects Thursday. Rizzo’s nine-year tenure with the Chicago Cubs ended after he was sent to the Yankees for two prospects. Entering the weekend series at Miami, the Yankees were 8 1/2 games behind AL East leader Boston and 3 1/2 behind Oakland for the league's second wild card. “I’ve been hearing for some time that it was a possibility, that New York was in play for me,” Gallo said. “I grew up a huge Yankee fan. My family is from New York. It was pretty surreal they told me I was going to the Yankees. A great opportunity — it’s an amazing team to be a part... [More]
Fri Jul 30 202117:11DJ LeMahieu, Gio Urshela Absent From Friday's Lineup
New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (triceps) and third baseman Gio Urshela (hamstring) are not in the lineup for Friday's game against the Marlins. Both LeMahieu and Urshela are considered day-to-day, per manager Aaron Boone. Boone noted that he's hopeful that they'll be available this weekend. Rougned Odor will start at second, with Tyler Wade filling in at third Friday. Odor is a solid upside play at the moment, having produced a .854 OPS in July.

Thu Jul 29 202122:44Yankees get Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo, cash for 2 minor leaguers
The New York Yankees acquired Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo for two minor leaguers Thursday in their second major trade this week for desperately needed left-handed bats. Chicago will pay the Yankees $5,652,403 as part of the trade, covering all but $202,435 of the remainder of Rizzo's $16.5 million salary, which comes to a prorated share of the $570,500 minimum. The swap came ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline Friday at 4 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Yankees announced they had gotten All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from Texas. Rizzo is batting .248 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs. The 31-year-old had been a fixture at Wrigley Field for a decade, and helped the Cubs break their long World Series drought with a championship in 2016. Popular in the clubhouse and with Cubs fans, Rizzo didn't play in a 7-4 loss at home to Cincinnati on Thursday. The three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner can become a free agent after the season. New York is fourth in the AL... [More]
Thu Jul 29 202122:44Not left out: Yankees get big lefty bats with Gallo, Rizzo
NEW YORK (AP) — Desperate for a powerful, left-handed bat to park balls in the short porch at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees got two of them. Hours after announcing their trade to acquire All-Star slugger Joey Gallo from Texas, the playoff-chasing Yankees worked out a deal for longtime Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo on Thursday. The swaps came on a day the Yankees lost at Tampa Bay 14-0, leaving them far behind Boston in the AL East and fourth in the chase for two wild-card spots. Team officials, including owner Hal Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman, have been holding meetings in nearby Tampa, Florida. “Part of the reason I’m here is because Hal always goes for it, and so does Brian,” Yankees ace Gerrit Cole said after the lopsided loss. “Continue to push chips in. I trust that they’re going to do what’s best for the organization, what’s best to win. I trust they’re going to try and make us better one way or another, and they did.” The Yankees made the moves... Thu Jul 29 202100:14AP source: Yanks reach deal to get slugger Gallo from Texas
All-Star slugger Joey Gallo is headed to the Bronx to give the New York Yankees some much-needed punch from the left side. The Yankees have reached a deal to get Gallo from the Texas Rangers, a person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday night because the move had not yet been announced and was subject to approval of medical records of the players involved. “Wow, a guy that can hit it out of any ball park. I don’t think he gets enough credit for the type of defense that he plays,” Aaron Judge said after the Yankees won 3-1 in 10 innings at Tampa Bay. “Also, just talking with Rougy and a couple guys that have played with him, man, what a guy that you want in you clubhouse, a guy that shows up everyday ready to play. He’s going to fight until the very end. If that’s true and it comes true that we get him, I think it’s going to be something special for our team," he said. Gallo, 27, should provide a powerful boost for the heavily... [More]
Wed Jul 28 202122:47DJ LeMahieu Reaches Base For 13th Straight Game
New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu went 1-for-4 with one RBI in a 3-1 win over the Rays on Wednesday night. His single in the third inning extended his on-base streak to 13 games, but despite that streak he's been mired in a bit of a slump lately. Over his last 15 games now, LaMahieu is slashing .220/328/.288 with two steals, five RBI and two runs scored. He'll look to turn things around on Thursday in the series finale with Tampa Bay.

Sun Jul 25 202115:23Yankees Germn has no-hitter through 7 vs Red Sox at Fenway
BOSTON (AP) — Domingo Germán of the New York Yankees is pitching a no-hitter through seven innings against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Mixing his well-spotted fastball in the mid-90 mph range with a changeup and curveball, the 28-year-old Germán has struck out 10 and allowed just one walk. He's thrown 90 pitches Sunday afternoon. Germán struck out four batters in the seventh. The inning was prolonged by a passed ball on a strike three. The last no-hitter at Fenway by an opponent was by Detroit's Jim Bunning on July 20, 1958, when he retired future fellow Hall of Famer Ted Williams on a flyball for the final out. The last Yankees pitcher to no-hit Boston was Dave Righetti at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1983. Germán has been helped by two excellent defensive plays. Shortstop Gleyber Torres went into the deep hole to throw out J.D. Martinez on a grounder in the fifth and first baseman DJ LeMahieu made a nice stab on Christian Vázquez’s grounder leading off the sixth. Germán, who missed all of last season serving the remainder of an 81-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy,is making his 17th start. He hadn'tt gone beyond 5 2/3 innings in his last eight, and his season-high is seven innings, which he’s done twice. The Yankees entered the day eight games back in the AL East after rallying for a 4-3 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday. New York leads 3-0. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sun Jul 18 202123:32Escobar HR, single lead Nats past Padres in series finale
WASHINGTON (AP) — Alcides Escobar homered in the eighth inning and hit a winning single in the ninth Sunday as the Washington Nationals wrapped up a disturbing weekend with an 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres. A day after the game was suspended in the sixth inning because of a shooting outside Nationals Park, the Padres completed a 10-4 victory. Washington then came back to end a six-game losing streak. Tres Barrera singled off Mark Melancon (2-2) with one out in the ninth and, after failing on a bunt attempt, Victor Robles was hit by pitch. Escobar hit a flyball that center fielder Trent Grisham couldn’t corral and Barrera scored. Brad Hand (5-2) earned the victory. Juan Soto joined Josh Harrison with three hits and added a two-run homer. Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Jackson Profar homered for the Padres. Nationals ace Max Scherzer allowed four runs on four hits in seven innings. He struck out eight. In the completion of Saturday's suspended game, Fernando Tatis Jr. had his third four-hit... [More]
Sun Jul 18 202101:01Shooting outside Nationals Park halts Padres-Washington game
WASHINGTON (AP) — The game between the San Diego Padres and Washington was suspended in the sixth inning Saturday night after police said there was a shooting outside Nationals Park. The shooting, an exchange of gunfire between people in two cars, left three people injured, according to Ashan Benedict, the Metropolitan Police Department’s executive assistant police chief. One of the people who was shot was a woman who was attending the game and who was struck while she was outside the stadium, he said. Her injuries weren’t considered life-threatening. Two people who were in one of the cars later walked into a local hospital with gunshot wounds and were being questioned by investigators, Benedict said, and the extent of their injuries wasn’t immediately clear. Investigators were still trying to locate the second vehicle involved in the shooting. The gunshots caused panic among fans inside the stadium, some of whom ducked for cover, hiding underneath tables and behind seats as announcers... [More]

Thu Jul 1 202103:41Sho time in Bronx far from Ruthian: Ohtani lasts 2 outs
NEW YORK (AP) — Fans came for Sho time, to watch Shohei Ohtani perform Ruthian feats. Instead, the 26-year-old Japanese sensation exited almost as quickly as the Bambino did during a famous early career outing. Offensive fireworks and mound magnificence had been combined by Ohtani in a manner not seen since Ruth pitched regularly for the Red Sox in 1919, the last season before Boston sold him to New York. Taking the mound below Yankee Stadium’s famous facade, Ohtani failed miserably but spectacularly. He allowed a career-worst seven runs and got just two outs. A miserably hot and humid night ended in a shocking Angels victory, unprecedented going back to at least 1900. Los Angeles became the first team to give up seven runs in the first inning and score seven in the ninth to win, beating the Yankees 11-8 at 1:06 a.m. Thursday in a game that took 5 hours, 57 minutes, including a pair of rain delays. Ohtani is the talk of baseball, a focus of the All-Star Game, where he will be the first... [More]
Wed Jun 30 202123:41Ohtani flops, exits early in Yankee Stadium pitching debut
NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani's debut on the Yankee Stadium mound sure didn't last long. Babe Ruth, he was not. At least on this night. The two-way phenom got only two outs Wednesday for the Los Angeles Angels during his highly anticipated first pitching appearance in the Bronx. Ohtani, who leads the majors with 28 home runs, was chased after four early walks and charged with a career-worst seven runs in a game later delayed more than two hours by rain during a pair of stoppages. Making his career-high 12th pitching start of the season on a 92-degree night, Ohtani flopped long before the showers arrived. He was handed a 2-0 lead on Phil Gosselin's two-run homer in the top of the first but quickly gave it back. The 26-year-old right-hander walked his first three batters and crossed up catcher Kurt Suzuki, resulting in a passed ball that advanced two runners. A visit from pitching coach Matt Wise didn't do the trick, either. Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres hit consecutive RBI singles... [More]
