Tyler Colvin (punctured chest) was released from a Miami area hospital on Wednesday.
Great news. While it's too bad that his season had to come to a premature end, this situation could have ended very, very badly. Colvin should be just fine heading into next season.

Sun Sep 19 201015:07Colvin OK after getting bat lodged in chest
Tyler Colvin's condition is stable after he was impaled by a broken bat in his upper left chest.
Colvin has minimal external bleeding but needed X-rays and sutures. It's unclear at this point how this will affect his status going forward. It will be interesting to see if this incident leads MLB to think about banning the easily-breakable maple bats that are so prevalent in baseball these days.

Fri Sep 17 201020:48Cubs scrap first base plans for Colvin
Plans for the Cubs to give Tyler Colvin some starts at first base have been scrapped for the time being.
Interim manager Mike Quade said he doesn't plan to try Colvin at first against any potential playoff contenders, which would likely mean his only chance to try the position would be in the final three games against Houston. Quade reasoned that Xavier Nady has played well and they don't want to take him out of the lineup. We have our doubts that Colvin is the answer at first base, but if the Cubs think he might be, there's no reason not to give him a shot right now, but it doesn't sound like that will happen.

Sun Aug 22 201008:53Colvin will play first against Nats
Tyler Colvin has been taking grounders at first base and will finally get some starts there in the series at Washington that begins Monday.
The Cubs don't want to put the added pressure on Colvin of trying out a new position at home. He played some first base in college at Clemson but has only played the outfield as a professional. Colvin is an option for the Cubs at first next season if he shows that he can handle the position.

Thu Aug 19 201010:30Colvin could play first base in 2011
According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, Tyler Colvin could be an option at first base next season.
Colvin hasn't played first base since he was a sophomore at Clemson, but would be willing to do it if needed. "I'm comfortable in the outfield, but if that's what they want me to do, I can't complain," said Colvin. "If it helps out the Chicago Cubs, that's what I'll do." In other words, he's not entirely eager to switch positions. The 24-year-old Colvin is batting .250/.310/.510 with 18 homers and 42 RBI this season and probably deserves an everyday job in the outfield next season.

Sun Aug 8 201009:16Slumping Colvin to get another day off
Tyler Colvin will get his second straight day off Sunday.
Colvin's day off Saturday was his first since July 11. The rookie has just two hits over his last 21 at-bats, and manager Lou Pinella thinks the best thing for him is just to sit out for a couple days. Xavier Nady will start in right field in Colvin's place.

Sun Jul 4 201018:16Colvin blasts two homers but Cubs falter
Tyler Colvin smacked two solo homers off Reds starter Mike Leake on Sunday.
Colvin had just three hits in his last 23 at-bats, and none of them had gone for extra bases. He broke out of that slump in a big way today, and now has 12 homers in just 162 at-bats on the season. His lack of day-to-day starts make him a tough option to use in shallow formats, but those in deeper leagues can simply plug Colvin in and enjoy the power when he does get to start.
Fri Jun 18 201017:17Cubs' Colvin hits eighth homer
Getting the start in the leadoff spot, Tyler Colvin went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk Friday versus the Angels.
Colvin's homer came off the other Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth inning. It wasn't enough in what had been a 7-2 game, but it was an impressive shot. He has eight homers in 108 at-bats on the season.
Fri Jun 18 201012:29Colvin leading off vs. White Sox
Tyler Colvin will lead off and play right field against the Angels on Friday afternoon.
This will be his first career appearance out of the leadoff spot. It's an interesting choice by Cubs manager Lou Piniella, especially against the left-hander Scott Kazmir. Still, if Colvin can spark the lineup, it will be difficult for Kosuke Fukudome to find any playing time.

Wed Jun 16 201000:42Cubs' Colvin homers in loss
Tyler Colvin went 2-for-4 and hit his seventh homer in Tuesday's loss to the A's.
Colvin started while Kosuke Fukudome sat against the right-hander Trevor Cahill. He committed two errors in right field during a three-run seventh inning for the A's, but defense isn't generally a problem for him. The Cubs want him in there against more righties.
Sun Jun 13 201018:26Piniella: Cubs to give OF Colvin more at-bats
Cubs manager Lou Piniella indicated Sunday that Tyler Colvin will play more and said "we want to see this kid in the lineup more."
We should say so. Colvin is raking a .305/.364/.600 line with six homers in 108 plate appearances. If Piniella intends to start him every day, Colvin needs to be picked up in mixed leagues. The former first-round pick has plenty of talent and now has the stage to show it.

Thu May 27 201017:01Colvin knocks in Cubs' lone run
Tyler Colvin delivered an RBI double in his lone at-bat to help the Cubs beat the Dodgers 1-0 on Thursday.
The Cubs focused on finding time for Colvin last month, but recently, they've instead chosen to go with Xavier Nady when they've replaced one of their starting outfielders. As a result, Colvin has started just one game in a week, even though he's continued to put up great numbers in his limited action. He's currently at 26 plate appearances for May after finishing with 52 in April.
Tue May 18 201023:26Colvin collects 3 hits in 6-2 win vs. Rockies
Tyler Colvin went 3-for-4 with a stolen base, an RBI and a pair of runs scored in a 6-2 Cubs victory over the Rockies on Tuesday.
Colvin's fourth-inning RBI single put the game's first run on the board. In the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead, he led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Starlin Castro infield single to help put the game away. Colvin is finally putting together his impressive array of talent and is now hitting .300/.368/.583. Playing time is the only thing keeping him from being a mixed-league fixture, but he has real NL-only value.
