RHP Chris Tillman's biggest problems this season have come in the early innings. It's also been an issue throughout his career. Baseballreference.com said that Tillman's first-inning ERA (entering Saturday) was 5.06 with his second-inning at 4.80. The numbers drastically fall after that, and he allowed four runs in the first three innings of his start in the nightcap, when Tillman got a no-decision and kept his nine-game winning streak alive despite allowing six runs in five innings. "Just poor execution, I think," Tillman said. "I got ahead of a lot of guys, and I think I gave up three or four 0-2 hits. That can't happen."

He allowed four runs on five hits with four strikeouts over five innings. "I finished up good," Tillman said. "It was a little struggle early on. I think fastball command was a little off, but we finished up well. Made some pitches when we needed to and like I said, the boys picked me up, picked me up big time today. Tough day on the bullpen, but we came out of everything with a big series win."

The right-hander allowed five runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 5 2/3 innings against the Yankees on Friday. Tillman had given up just one home run in his first eight starts, but allowed eight long balls in his last four outings. "I just started falling behind," Tillman said. "I think any time you're trying to make pitches from behind in the count, guys are going to make you pay when you start missing over the plate. Especially early on, when you're falling behind, if you try to make pitches behind in the count, it's not going to go in your favor."

RHP Chris Tillman continues to give the Orioles the consistency they were hoping for from him this year. He allowed two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 solid innings and won his fifth straight game in the 5-2 victory over Seattle. Tillman (6-1) did just what manager Buck Showalter talked about before the game, pitching well most of the time, then struggling, but finding his way back. "The one thing you can pinpoint is the slider command has come a long way," C Matt Wieters said. "I think he probably started throwing it about three years ago, and he's gotten a lot of reps with it, so he's feeling a lot more comfortable with his slider."

RHP Chris Tillman's success this season has been helped by the way he's limited opponents' homers. He's now allowed only one in 45 1/3 innings after seven shutout innings in Friday's 1-0 victory over the Tigers. Tillman is using his slider more and more, which is keeping batters off-balance and turning in several good efforts. "You take what you did good and work on what you didn't do so well, and we take a lot of pride in that as a starting staff, to get that work in and I think it kind of sets us up nicely for our next outing," Tillman said.

RHP Chris Tillman (4-1, 3.05 ERA) recovered from a shaky start to go 6 1/3 innings Sunday against Oakland. He allowed three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts, including four of the final five batters he faced. Entering the game, he had given up one run and struck out 18 in his last two starts. "It was a grind early," Tillman said. "I think I made some pitches I wanted to make. They're a good team. They don't swing and miss too much. They take some good swings early on. We had to make some adjustments to get through that game."
