Wed Mar 29 201711:44Orioles season preview: Searching for starting pitching
The Baltimore Orioles faced a few major questions in the offseason, and they answered most of them. They'll platoon, in some form, the corner outfield spots. Welington Castillo takes over for Matt Wieters as the regular catcher, and they re-signed Mark Trumbo. But the biggest question will take a while to answer: Is the starting rotation strong enough to carry this team? What made that question even tougher to answer is the shoulder soreness that sidelined No. 1 starter Chris Tillman. There's no projected date yet for his return after he missed nearly all of spring training and even got a cortisone shot in mid-March.Kevin Gausman is coming off a strong second half of 2016, and manager Buck Showalter said the right-hander will take the ball on Opening Day vs. the Toronto Blue Jays. Gausman really helped carry the Orioles to a playoff appearance last year and threw well again in spring training."I felt good in the spring," Gausman told The Baltimore Sun. "I've been throwing the ball well, throwing... [More]

RHP Chris Tillman's shoulder problems leave the Orioles with a big hole in their starting rotation. He's been out for most of spring training, just started slowly throwing again, and the Orioles really aren't sure when Tillman will be back. What's concerning is that this is like the injury that sidelined him last season in the second half. Tillman did get a cortisone shot right, so the Orioles have to simply sit and wait.

Tillman didn't make it out of the fifth inning in the Wild Card game in Toronto but manager Buck Showalter pulled him quickly as the Jays often hit the right-hander hard.

Mon Oct 3 201618:48Stroman, Tillman get nod in AL Wild Card Game
The Toronto Blue Jays will send right-hander Marcus Stroman to the mound on Tuesday when they host the American League Wild Card Game against the Baltimore Orioles, who will counter with Chris Tillman.Stroman (9-10, 4.37 ERA) helped pitch the Blue Jays into the postseason last year after coming back from a knee surgery but struggled early in 2016. The Duke product finished the campaign by allowing three or fewer earned runs in five of his last six starts, with the outlier in that bunch coming Thursday against Baltimore, which roughed him up for four runs on nine hits and two walks in seven innings.Toronto was forced to burn ace Aaron Sanchez and All-Star Marco Estrada over the weekend in Boston in order to wrap up the wild card and chose Stroman over lefty Francisco Liriano, who won the 2013 NL Wild Card Game for the Pittsburgh Pirates and pitched well after being acquired at the trade deadline.Tillman (16-6, 3.77) is the ace of the Baltimore staff but limped to the finish in the regular season, failing to complete six innings in any of his last three outings.
