Herrera could be in line for increased playing time this spring if Daniel Murphy's left hand is injured after getting hit by a David Price fastball Friday.

Herrera is slated to open 2015 at Triple-A Las Vegas due to the presence of Murphy. With Murphy a free agent after the season and the Mets not inclined to sign him to a long-term deal, Herrera would seem to be next in line at second base. If Murphy's hand keeps him out for any time, Herrera could slide into the position sooner than expected.

Herrera left Saturday's game with a strained hamstring, and with only a handful of games remaining, the 20-year-old will be shut down in an effort to avoid further injury. He spent most of the season in High-A and Double-A before joining the Mets in late August. In 18 games (59 at-bats), Herrera hit .220 with 11 RBI and three home runs.

Herrera was able to walk off the field under his own power, so early indications seem to denote that this injury shouldn't be too alarming. However, the recently promoted Herrera might be given some time off as a precaution for his long-term future with the Mets.

Herrera will sit for a second game in a row, as he's currently mired in a 1-for-19 slump. Wilmer Flores will once again fill in at second in his place.

It was expected that Herrera would see his playing time cut significantly now that Daniel Murphy (calf) is healthy, but with David Wright (shoulder) getting shut down for the year, Murphy will play third base Wednesday. If the Mets like Murphy as an option at the hot corner, Herrera could end up seeing more at-bats than anticipated down the stretch.
