Wed Oct 2 201917:50Yelich watches helplessly as Brewers fall short again
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Christian Yelich watched helplessly from the dugout as Milwaukee’s season ended. The Brewers controlled the first 7 1/3 innings of Tuesday’s NL wild-card game in Washington before a stunning collapse. All-Star closer Josh Hader was wild, and Milwaukee got stung by a disputed hit-by-pitch, a broken-bat base hit and an error by overaggressive rookie right fielder Trent Grisham. Minutes later, the Nationals wildly celebrated their 4-3 victory on the infield while the Brewers _ pummeled by injuries, especially down the stretch _ limped into the offseason.“I think when all the dust settles and you really evaluate the year, we can be proud of a lot of things,” Yelich said. “I really think we'll be better off for a lot of those experiences.”Yelich overcame lingering back issues to put himself in contention for a second straight NL MVP before a foul ball broke his right kneecap Sept. 10. Fellow outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Ryan Braun battled through leg injuries in the last week,... [More]

Tue Oct 1 201902:54Blame it on the juice: Pitchers set for homer-filled October
Justin Verlander didn't intend to alter his pitching strategy, not after 14 seasons as a major league ace. But then the home runs stopped making sense.A long drive by Yankees slugger Aaron Judge? The Houston Astros ace can live with that. This season, though, was full of surprises. Like when spindly utility man Ehire Adrianza drove a fastball into the right field party deck in Minnesota. Or the time light-hitting Angels infielder David Fletcher nearly put one into a parking lot beyond left field during a series in Monterrey, Mexico. Routine fly balls had become wall-scraping homers, and every hitter was suddenly strong enough to reach the second deck."The game has changed completely," Verlander said.Expect more of the same this October.Hitters smashed a record 6,776 home runs in 2019, soaring past the previous high of 6,105 from two years earlier. It's a rise of over 60% from 2014, a year before a seismic home run spike attributed to tweaks in the baseballs. Major League Baseball commissioned... [More]

Sun Sep 29 201921:53LEADING OFF: Skippers on the hot seat, playoff teams ailing
A look at what's happening around the majors Monday:HOT SEATThe day after the regular season can be dicey for managers — a lot of teams like to make changes.A couple of clubs got a head start on their winter plans Sunday, with the Cubs announcing Joe Maddon wouldn't be back and the Pirates firing Clint Hurdle. That makes five openings — San Francisco's Bruce Bochy and Kansas City's Ned Yost stepped away after previously saying they would retire, and San Diego's Andy Green was fired on Sept. 21.Philadelphia's Gabe Kapler and the New York Mets' Mickey Callaway are thought to be in danger of losing their jobs this week.Kapler's Phillies have gone 161-163 over two seasons, including 81-81 this year after signing Bryce Harper to a $330 million, 13-year contract, also adding Andrew McCutchen and David Robertson and trading for star catcher J.T. Realmuto and shortstop Jean Segura.Callaway's Mets are 163-161, including 86-76 this year after first-year general manager Brodie Van Wagenen proclaimed... [More]

A look at what's happening around the majors today:TO BE DETERMINEDThe NL Central race has come down to the final day of the regular season. The Cardinals lead the Brewers by a game after both clubs lost Saturday night. St. Louis fell under a barrage of homers by the Cubs, while Milwaukee closer Josh Hader allowed a tying homer in the ninth before the Brewers lost 3-2 in 10 innings at Colorado. If the clubs are tied after their regular season finales, they'll play a tiebreaking Game 163 in St. Louis on Monday. The second-place finisher will play at Washington in the NL wild-card game Tuesday night.Milwaukee may have to battle on without Lorenzo Cain. The high-flying center fielder sprained his left ankle on a home-plate collision Saturday. The Cardinals, meanwhile, may get bonus drama against Chicago after a shouting match between Yadier Molina and Cole Hamels led to a benches-clearing fracas between the rivals Saturday. Manager Mike Shildt decided late Saturday that ace Jack Flaherty will... [More]
