Junior Lake went 0-for-2 and drove home the Cubs only run with a sacrifice fly in Monday's loss to the White Sox.

The 24-year-old outfielder has had a rough go of it at the plate thus far, slashing .240/.266/.440 on the season. He has a decent blend of power and speed, and could be a mixed league option for the next few weeks while Ryan Sweeney is sidelined.

Lake got the party started with a three-run blast to left off Jesse Chavez in the sixth inning. All told, he finished the day 3-for-5 with six RBI. He's slated for everyday playing time with the Cubs this season, and though his average could be a drain, his combination of power and speed make for an intriguing buying opportunity.

They've invoked a "fatigue" clause in Lake's contract, preferring that the young outfielder get some rest before spring training. He was leading the league with a .343 batting average and was sixth with a .457 slugging percentage before the Cubs informed Estellas de Oriente they could no longer use the 23-year-old. Lake is likely to be in the Cubs' Opening Day lineup next season, whether it be in left or center field.

Lake is still hitting .314 in September and .299 overall, but it's hard to have high hopes for a guy with a 63/10 K/BB ratio in 224 at-bats and only middling power. He's fanned 14 times and gone without an RBI since his last walk on Sept. 10.

Lake had four homers in his first 15 games with the Cubs, but he had gone without one in 29 games before taking Kyle Lohse deep today. He hadn't so much as driven in a run since Aug. 18. The Cubs figure to continue playing him regularly after trading away two-thirds of their outfield, but he shouldn't project as a regular headed into 2014.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum has batted Lake first or second in each of the last four games, so he's well worth using in deeper mixed formats while he's hot.
