Tue Feb 5 201916:24Cardinals hope Goldschmidt can lead them back to playoffs
ST. LOUIS (AP) — After missing postseason play for the past three seasons, the St. Louis Cardinals believe they've struck gold with Paul Goldschmidt in their quest to play into October."We knew we just couldn't have a stagnant offseason. We knew we had to make some changes to our club because we felt like even though we had a good team last year, we still weren't good enough," said John Mozeliak, the team's president of baseball operations."We looked at all the different options that might be out there, whether it be the free-agent market or what our trade options might look like. We felt that Paul checked so many boxes for us that it made sense," he said.St. Louis acquired the slugging first baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks in December for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a 2019 draft pick.Goldschmidt was glad to join the Cardinals."This organization here has had success for a really long time and sustained it and that's really tough... Tue Dec 11 201823:41Dodgers happy with Goldschmidt's move to St Louis, Cubs not
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt's move from Arizona to St. Louis made Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts so happy, he was smelling roses.Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon, not so much.St. Louis acquired the six-time All-Star first baseman from the Diamondbacks last week for pitcher Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a 2019 draft pick."I don't like the Diamondbacks right now at all, I really don't," Maddon said Tuesday, knowing the NL Central rival Cardinals had strengthened their batting order. "When he sashays into the clubhouse and everybody sees him walking in there, they all become better. That definitely makes them much more difficult to beat next year."Roberts' Dodgers will face Goldschmidt a lot less frequently in the NL West."Goldy, he can stay in the Central as long as he wants. I'm trying to work getting him in the American League next," Roberts said. "I hope he's happy. I got to send him flowers."Goldschmidt can become a free agent... [More]

"I think the biggest thing is I'm excited to be here, excited to be part of this team and organization and just focused on getting ready for spring training and opening day and the season and trying to help us win."St. Louis has a history of acquiring sluggers and signing them to long-term contracts, such as Mark McGwire and Matt Holliday."It's always hard to pencil out these types of deals when you only have one year of control," president of... Sun May 6 201820:27Cards' Molina has surgery, out 1 month after hit in groin
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Matheny knows all too well the usual aches and pains associated with catching in the major leagues. That experience told the St. Louis Cardinals manager that the pain Yadier Molina was in after being hit in the groin by a foul tip on Saturday was anything but normal.Matheny's intuition proved correct later that night when Molina underwent surgery for what the team called a "pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma." The eight-time All-Star was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday, and he's expected to miss at least four weeks with the injury."It's like nothing you've ever felt," said Matheny, also a catcher during his 13-year playing career. "You're always just hoping it's one of those that just takes a couple of minutes, then it's manageable. But you could see that was a different level."Molina left Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs after being hit when Kris Bryant tipped a 102-mph pitch from reliever Jordan Hicks. Molina immediately fell to the ground... [More]

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals say catcher Yadier Molina has undergone surgery and is expected to miss a month after being hit in the groin by a foul tip.The Cardinals placed Molina on the 10-day disabled list Sunday. They said the eight-time All-Star is projected to miss at least four weeks with what the team called a "pelvic injury with traumatic hematoma."Molina left Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs in the eighth inning after being hit in the groin when Kris Bryant a tipped 102-mph pitch from reliever Jordan Hicks. Tue Mar 20 201816:58At 35, Cardinals catcher Molina ready for the long haul
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — For several springs now, the St. Louis Cardinals proclaimed plans to rest Yadier Molina more frequently during the season to keep him fresh for a playoff push.Such ideas always leave the All-Star catcher shaking his head."I don't understand why people want me to be out of the lineup," Molina said.He has a point.Owner of as many Gold Gloves at catcher as he has All-Star appearances — eight — Molina is a hard man to keep in the dugout. He's started fewer than 130 games only once since 2009, the exception coming in 2014 when he tore a thumb ligament. The 35-year-old Molina is the only starting St. Louis position player remaining from the Cardinals' 2011 World Series championship team. He's the general, and he's ready to compete nearly every day.Despite the keeping fresh talk, a simple philosophy prompts St. Louis manager Mike Matheny to keep writing Molina's name on the lineup card so often."Whoever's giving us our best chance that day is going to play," Matheny said. "He... [More]
