Wed May 22 201913:24Athletics change plans, don't place Davis on injured list
CLEVELAND (AP) — Oakland Athletics designated hitter Khris Davis is undergoing an MRI on his ailing left hip in Cleveland, but the team has opted against placing him on the injured list for now.On Tuesday night, Oakland manager Bob Melvin and Davis both said the 2018 major league home run leader would be going on the 10-day IL after the injury flared up during a 5-3 win over the Indians.Melvin backtracked before the teams' series finale, explaining, "There is a great chance he goes on the IL, but we're holding off — just in case — and we'll see where we are on Friday."The Athletics wrap up an eight-game road trip Wednesday and are off Thursday, which Melvin said factored into the decision. They host Seattle on Friday.Davis, who hit a career-high 48 homers last season, initially suffered the injury May 5 in Pittsburgh. He is batting .248 with a team-best 12 home runs and 29 RBIs in 43 games.Triple-A Las Vegas outfielder Skye Bolt joined the team in Cleveland and had a locker in the visiting clubhouse, but was not recalled as a result of the change of plans.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo sometimes pauses for a deep breath or glances around the ballpark between pitches looking for something to slow his racing mind. The big Texas slugger grew up trying to hit baseballs as far as he could, so the idea of relaxing in the moments before one of the most powerful swings in the majors wasn't the easiest to grasp.Yet there he was, spending two hours with a Rangers coach discussing ways to clear his head in the middle of an at-bat after his average had dipped well below a career mark barely above .200.A week later, Gallo tied his career high of five RBIs without hitting a homer and had his first-ever sacrifice fly in the big leagues. With a little help from one of his typical sky-high popups that fell for a single , the left-handed hitter's batting average was .281 entering Monday, its highest since early in Gallo's first full season in the majors two years ago."I've always been really tense in trying to crush the ball," Gallo said. A look at what's happening around the majors today:BOUR BLUNDERAngels slugger Justin Bour looks to improve his baserunning after yet another blunder on the bags. He failed to run out a popup in a tie game in the eighth, and the Mariners alertly let the ball and turned it into an easy, inning-ending double play. Seattle wound up winning 5-3."There's no excuse for it. It's terrible," Bour said.Last Saturday at Wrigley Field, Bour singled in the first inning and tried to advance on an overthrow. Bour lumbered toward second, slid in and was called safe. But convinced he was out, he simply left the base and began walking back to the dugout, and was tagged by the Cubs' Javier Baez halfway between second and first.CHECK HIMMets ace Jacob deGrom will have an MRI on his right elbow after the NL Cy Young Award said his arm has felt sore. Fri Apr 19 201920:02Khris Davis wants to lead A's to playoffs again and again
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Khris Davis is hardly comfortable with the kind of attention and fanfare the Athletics pulled out Friday to honor him for opting to stay in Oakland. So it was quite a scene when the understated slugger raised his arms high as teammates and A's employees cheered and clapped when he entered the room."Yeah, it feels amazing, it's incredible, they're going to make fun of me all day for this," Davis said with a smile Friday, a day after the announcement of his deal adding $33.75 million that runs through 2021.Davis got his big day — at last. He was patient for months, stayed focused on clearing the fences instead of cashing checks, all while showing Oakland's front office it needed to get a new deal done to keep the majors' reigning home run leader around for the foreseeable future."I don't seek attention, I guess, I'm not an attention seeker," Davis said. His 10 home runs entering Friday's game against Toronto was tied for most in baseball. The 31-year-old designated hitter...
