Wed May 9 201817:28Blue Jays get INF Urshela from Indians for player or cash
TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired infielder Gio Urshela from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named or cash.Urshela hadn't played in the majors this season after a hamstring injury set him back in spring training. The trade came Wednesday, five days after the Indians designated him for assignment. The 26-year-old Urshela hit .224 with one home run and 15 RBIs in 67 games with the Indians last season. He was batting .324 with seven RBIs in 11 games at Triple-A Columbus this season.Urshela, who also appeared in 81 games for Cleveland in 2015, has played all four infield positions. Manager John Gibbons said defensive versatility will be an asset for the Blue Jays, who currently have shortstops Aledmys Diaz (left ankle) and Troy Tulowitzki (right ankle) on the disabled list, and recently demoted struggling second baseman Devon Travis to Triple-A.Third baseman Josh Donaldson has also spent time on the disabled list this season with a sore right shoulder. Donaldson was the DH for Wednesday's game against Seattle, with catcher Russell Martin getting the start at third base. The Blue Jays will add Urshela to their 40-man roster but must wait for him to obtain a work visa before deciding whether to bring him to Toronto or assign him to Triple-A Buffalo.
Fri Mar 30 201818:25Tulowitzki to have surgery on bone spurs in both heels
TORONTO (AP) — Blue Jays shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery Monday to remove bone spurs from both heels and is expected to miss eight weeks, general manager Ross Atkins said Friday. The bone spurs have bothered Tulowitzki during his recovery from surgery to repair the ligament damage suffered when he stepped on C.J. Cron's foot while trying to beat out an infield hit in a game last July against the Los Angeles Angels. The five-time All-Star has not played since. The spur on Tulowitzki's right heel was a minor irritant at the beginning of spring training, and he hoped to be able to play through it. The decision to undergo surgery came after pain also developed in his left heel."We felt we were making some progress then the other foot started bothering him," Atkins said.Including this latest absence, Tulowitzki will have missed at least 30 games in seven consecutive seasons.

Thu Mar 29 201807:41Rebuilding can pay off, but also invites skepticism
Spring training was just starting for the Pittsburgh Pirates under a splendid Florida sky. It was the time of year when any team can feel optimistic, but on this morning, the team was still coming to terms with an offseason shakeup. Stars Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole had been traded, and Josh Harrison — one of the team's top remaining players — was talking through his concerns with reporters."You just want to know where we stand as a team, where you stand as a player — what's expected of you, what's expected of the team. Sometimes that gets lost in translation, the human side of this game," Harrison said. "We all want to win. I'm not saying nobody wants to win, but when you feel it's not the main goal of everybody, whether it's in the clubhouse or dealing with the organization, that's hard to be a part of."Later that day, general manager Neal Huntington held his own session with the media, saying of course the Pirates want to win — and indicating they weren't planning any sort of drastic...
