Saltalamacchia had his contract selected by the Diamondbacks on Friday.
With Tuffy Gosewisch (knee) placed on the 15-day DL due to an ACL injury, Saltalamacchia and Jordan Pacheco will handle catching duties for at least the next two weeks. Salty was released by the Marlins three weeks ago, after starting the season with a .389 OPS in his first 33 plate appearances. He probably still has some pop in his bat, but a strikeout rate upward of 30 percent has to be expected.
Fri May 29 201512:04 Jarrod Saltalamacchia: Has Contract Selected by Diamondbacks Friday
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Friday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected the contract of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on Friday. Saltalamacchia began the season as the starting catcher for the Miami Marlins, but he was released after struggling mightily in April when he had just two hits in 29 at-bats. He was the likely choice to be recalled after Tuffy Gosewisch was placed on the disabled list with an ACL injury, though the team had explored the possibility of bringing Saltalamacchia up to replace Gosewisch in the starting role prior to the injury. "Although Tuffy has done a really good job defensively, we still expect a little more offense from him," general manager Dave Stewart said earlier this month. "He may make those adjustments, but with that being said, we have to at least go through the process internally and see if Saltalamacchia is an option to bring here."

Saltalamacchia is expected to be called up from Triple-A Reno on Friday, MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports.
The Marlins dropped Saltalamacchia from their 40-man roster after he posted a sickly .389 OPS over 33 plate appearances, giving up on him just over one season into their three-year, $21 million commitment. After signing a minor-league deal with the Diamondbacks, Saltalamacchia hasn't performed much better at Triple-A Reno, where he's slashing an unimpressive .188/.222/.375 across 36 plate appearances. However, with the catching-bereft Diamondbacks dealing with an injury to starter Tuffy Gosewisch (knee), Saltalamacchia will have a chance to stake his claim to some regular duties in the majors. Look for manager Chip Hale to split the starts with Jordan Pacheco and Saltalamacchia for the duration of Gosewisch's absence.

Saltalamacchia will undergo a physical in Phoenix befor joining Triple-A Reno to receive some at-bats, Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona reports.
Saltalamacchia hasn't played since Apr. 23 due to injury and then his release, but that should change when he joins the Triple-A club. He's not expected to stay there too long, as he'll likely obtain the primary catching spot for the Dbacks despite his 2-for-29 start to the season.

Saltalamacchia will sign with the Diamondbacks after clearing waivers, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
Saltalamacchia had been off to a dismal 2-for-29 start to the season, which eventually cost him playing time to J.P Realmuto and led to the veteran being designated for assignment. He'll enter an organization with equally poor offensive production from their catcher, as Tuffy Gosewisch owns a .176 OPS on the year. If Saltalamacchia is able to turn things around at the plate, he could be worth a look in deeper and NL-only formats.
Wed May 6 201509:42The Diamondbacks have some interest in signing Saltalamacchia
The Diamondbacks have some interest in signing Saltalamacchia, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.
The Diamondbacks have received almost nothing offensively from starting catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (.176/.222/.176), so Saltalamacchia would be an upgrade despite his own struggles this year. A move to Arizona would provide Salty a boost in his home park, if he were to land there.
Tue May 5 201512:30Saltalamacchia released by Marlins on Tuesday
Saltalamacchia was released by the Marlins on Tuesday, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
The Marlins will eat the remainder of Saltalamacchia's contract, while the catcher is now free to sign with a team of his choice. He could conceivably land a backup gig at the big-league level, despite starting the season 2-for-29 with a home run, four walks and 12 strikeouts.
Mon Apr 27 201515:33Jarrod Saltalamacchia: Designated For Assignment
Saltalamacchia was reinstated from the paternity list and designated for assignment Mondayt, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Saltalamacchia remains in the second year of a three-year, $21 million contract with the Marlins, but his 2-for-29 start to the season at the plate was too much to overcome. He lost time to prospect J.T. Realmuto before the leave, and the club will likely use the combination of Realmuto and Jeff Mathis when he returns from the disabled list. Saltalamacchia will have the option to become a free agent or accept an assignment to the minors if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Saltalamacchia (paternity) is not in the lineup Sunday against the Nationals, MLB.com's William Ladson reports.
Saltalamacchia is eligible to come off the paternity list, but considering that he is not listed as an available player Sunday, he'll likely remain with his family another day. J.T. Realmuto will start for the third straight day, and will now have started nine of the team's last 11 contests. Look for Saltalamacchia to be available for Monday's series opener against the Mets.
Fri Apr 24 201515:09Saltalamacchia placed on paternity list Friday
Saltalamacchia was placed on the paternity list Friday.
It is unclear how much time he will miss, but J.T. Realmuto appears poised to start the next couple games for the Marlins behind the dish.
Tue Apr 21 201516:55Saltalamacchia out of lineup Tuesday against Phillies
Saltalamacchia is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Phillies, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
J.T. Realmuto will start behind the plate for the fifth time in six games. At this point, Saltalamacchia should be viewed as the secondary catching option for Miami, though he could always return to a starting role if Realmuto struggles with the bat for a prolonged stretch.
Sun Apr 19 201511:17Saltalamacchia out of lineup Sunday against Mets
Saltalamacchia is out of the lineup Sunday against the Mets.
Saltalamacchia will sit for the fourth time in five days, as the Marlins appear to have turned over the keys to J.T. Realmuto, at least for the time being. With just two hits in 28 at-bats to go along with a 42.9 percent strikeout rate, Saltalamacchia has been a disaster for the Marlins this season, and should probably be stashed on the bench by those who roster him in two-catcher leagues.
Fri Apr 17 201515:34Saltalamacchia out of lineup again Friday
Saltalamacchia is out of the lineup again Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
J.T. Realmuto will start behind the dish for a third consecutive day. Manager Mike Redmond suggested Thursday that Saltalamacchia would likely sit more frequently moving forward, saying "If giving [Saltalamacchia] a few extra days here or there helps him and helps us, then it will be worth it." The way things are trending, Saltalamacchia appears in danger of falling into a secondary role.
Thu Apr 16 201521:22Saltalamacchia may sit more frequently moving forward
Saltalamacchia may sit more frequently moving forward, MLB.com reports. "I think it's always a touchy situation anytime you have conversations with guys, and you have to give them a break," manager Mike Redmond said Thursday. "But at the same time, too, we're trying to win ballgames. If giving [Saltalamacchia] a few extra days here or there helps him and helps us, then it will be worth it."
Saltalamacchia is sitting in favor of J.T. Realmuto on Thursday for a second day in a row, following a 2-for-22, 11-strikeout start to the season. Realmuto went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in his first start of the year Wednesday, and Redmond suggested the performance energized the ballclub. While Saltalamacchia figures to continue serving as the top option behind the plate for now, performance will ultimately dictate how the playing time is divvied up.
Wed Apr 15 201509:57Saltalamacchia not in lineup for Wednesday's game against Braves
Saltalamacchia is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Braves, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Saltalamacchia went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in Tuesday's game and is just 2-for-22 (.091) on the season, so a day off probably can't hurt. Top prospect J.T. Realmuto is not pushing Saltalamacchia for the starting catcher job just yet, but he is on the big league roster and starting Wednesday, so Saltalamacchia should have extra motivation to get things back on track with his bat.

Saltalamacchia slugged a pinch-hit home run, his first of the season, in Sunday's loss to the Rays.
Despite being given the day off Sunday, Salty was forced into action after backup Jeff Mathis sustained a fractured finger. Saltalamacchia has been off to a slow start at the dish, batting just .143 (2-for-14) with seven strikeouts and two walks through the season's first week. With Mathis looking at a 4-6 week absence following the injury, the Marlins are likely to bring up top prospect J.T. Realmuto to back up Saltalamacchia.
Wed Apr 8 201515:21Saltalamacchia not in lineup for Wednesday's game against Braves
Saltalamacchia is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Braves.
Saltalamacchia is 0-for-7 with five strikeouts through two games this season, so manager Mike Redmond decided to give him a night off. Jeff Mathis will get the start behind the plate in Saltalamacchia's place.

Saltalamacchia is out of the lineup for the third straight game Sunday against the Nationals, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
Saltalamacchia doesn't appear to be dealing with any injury, so chalk this up as extra rest for the backstop that has caught 103 games for the Marlins this year. J.T. Realmuto will take over behind the plate for the Sunday afternoon tilt.

Saltalamacchia is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Nationals, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.
Saltalamacchia, who is just 1-for-10 in his career against Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg, will sit out Saturday for the second day in a row. Jeff Mathis will get the start behind the plate in Saltalamacchia's place.
Fri Sep 26 201416:51Saltalamacchia not in lineup Friday
Saltalamacchia is not in the lineup Friday, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
It's just a standard day off for Saltalamacchia. Look for him to catch at least one more time over the season's final two games.
